View Full Version : "Sleapers" thread - Some entertainment on the side

As mentioned in the June 18th update, although there are no official contests with the staff feature this year, "Sleapers" does have two sets of hidden (and not-so-hidden) elements for your guessing pleasure.<ul> There is at least one cameo per episode by a forumgoer. Â Some of these are tricky, so I doubt any one person can get them all but you're welcome to try and/or speculate.
Secondly, IJD mentions in part 1 that we've been to at least thirty worlds, by his count. Â We've dropped mentions of worlds we've "sleaped" to, so try and list or count them all. (This includes not only references worlds, but worlds actually visited during the feature, btw.)
A couple days after part 7 has been published we'll reveal the cameos and list the worlds we visited. Go nuts![/color:post_uid0]

Well, Akili in Part 2 is quite clearly our beloved Nan.

The Baron could be anyone, although I have a strange suspicion that it might be Kira herself.

Part 1 has me stumped, and Part 4 isn't much better.

I don't think I like this game.[/color:post_uid0]

Fun little name game, ain't it? Â I think I've got everyone so far (that is, one per fiver, then I'm set) - so I'll concentrate my attention on the place "slept" too --

Or is that "sleeped" too? Â Hmmm...

Well, we have the two worlds the story so far takes place in -- the one with the police station and Shariff Dean, and the Mirror Universe. Plus the one they're from originally.

Then, mentioned briefly --

[b:post_uid0]Part One:[/b:post_uid0] Elbonian Mafia Universe, Nazi World, The Gangster World, The Dimension of Pain, The World Without Shrimp, Backwards Went Time Where One The, Giant Mice Land (Disneyworld ;)), Seven different places Zeke got arrested (including the bee-eating incident) - i'm not sure if those are separate worlds or not, but I'll assume so for now.

[b:post_uid0]Part Two:[/b:post_uid0] The Casino World - (I musta missed some there)

[b:post_uid0]Part Three:[/b:post_uid0] The Wizard World, The World Where Sandwiches Eat People, Medieval World

[b:post_uid0]Part Four:[/b:post_uid0] The World Where Everyone Spoke in Questions, The World Where The Penalty For Everything Was Being Sneezed On

That's just so far, bringing my count up to: 24

Anyone else?[/color:post_uid0]

Part One: the one the other Zeke came from

(Originally, I'd assumed that Akili was just a play on alkaline.)
As for the other cameos, I'd have to hunt around in the guest fivers to check people's names. Aki, Purnell and Windham aren't ringing any bells right now.[/color:post_uid0]

>> As for the other cameos, I'd have to hunt around in the guest fivers to check people's names. Aki, Purnell and Windham aren't ringing any bells right now. <<

A complicating factor is that not all guest writers use their real names in the copyright notice at the bottom of the published fivers. Until Zeke told me, I had no idea who Purnell is, even though he's written material for 5MNG. Heck, not even all the *staff* writers use their real names: IJD's been a fellow section head for over a year and I *still* don't know his real name -- assuming he has one. :) Even just finding out what the pseudonym "IJD GAF" *means* took quite a while.[/color:post_uid0]

Well duh, if it was that easy it wouldn't be much of a challenge. :D However, some (but not all) of the cameos have associated clues so that even if you can't put the name to the forumgoer you may be able to guess who it is.[/color:post_uid0]

Well, the "Baron" might be Zeke. Which could mean that "Windham" is Kira.

I've noticed that at one point in the fourth part it says "Winham" instead of "Windham", though I'm guessing that's just a typo.[/color:post_uid0]

I can possibly offer you an Earl or a Prince (although the Prince is under the Irish nobility system, which simply called everyone King).

The Maguires were just a step below the provincial kings (Ulster, Munster, etc) and two steps below the High Kingd (Ard-righ). They were tribal kings, and were lords over several clans. Fermanagh was their playground.[/color:post_uid0]

"Purnell" took a little digging, but there's another clue there, too.
"Akili" is pretty easy, and "Windham" should be easy, as well.
For "Baron" and "Col. Saxon", it helps a bit to have been hanging around the forums for a while.
"Greg 'Soon' Thaid" was more obscure, but you figured that one out before I did.

PHJ is right about which is the "official" cameo in Sleapers 7. For a hint, look at the adjective used at one point to describe the character.

There are nine other 5MVers referenced directly or indirectly in the text. The hooded man and the cow are [i:post_uid0]not[/i:post_uid0] among them, though when I first thought of the former he was going to be a cameo. I hadn't decided who by the time I changed my mind.

Okay, two days after the "we'll announce tomorrow," here's the cameos. Or at least, the ones I know.

Part 1: "Purnell" is the real last name of FatMatDuhRat and "Aki" is his dog "Kia". The NYC locale should also have tipped off anyone who has been around the boards at the same time as FMDR.

Part 2: As previously established, "Akili" is Nan's real name. (And no, it's [i:post_uid0]not[/i:post_uid0] Alkali.) The clue there was that she was described as "mysterious," as in "Nan the Mysterious Romulan."

Part 3: The "Baron" is Celeste, because that's her last name. The clue there was the Baron's dog, "Bernie," since Celeste owns a Bernese Mountain dog. (As anyone who's been around the forums for a while well knows.)

Part 4: "Windham" is saxamaphone; his real name can be seen on any of his fivers.

Part 5: "Colonel Saxon" is MmeBlueberry, a.k.a. Amanda Saxon, a.k.a. Amanda Dean. The hints there were many: the strawberry patch (not blueberries, since this is the mirror universe), Derek's comments about the Colonel being a woman he'd like to meet, and the comments about Colonel Saxon and marriage.

Part 6: "Greg 'Soon' Thaid" is an anagram of "Things Are Good." That one was probably the hardest unless you suspected it was an anagram.

Part 7: Ask Zeke. I have my own guesses but I don't know for sure.

As for the next part -- does anyone want to take a shot at naming all the worlds sleaped too?[/color:post_uid0]

I've got 7 and possibly 8 so far (and no, I didn't cheat):

Here's my offcial final count:

Well, we have the three worlds the story takes place in -- the one with the police station and Shariff Dean, the Mirror Universe, and the "Pi is Exactly Three!" World

Then, mentioned briefly --

Part One: Elbonian Mafia Universe, Nazi World, The Gangster World, The Dimension of Pain, The World Without Shrimp, Backwards Went Time Where One The, Giant Mice Land (Disneyworld ), Seven different places Zeke got arrested (including the bee-eating incident) - i'm not sure if those are separate worlds or not, but I'll assume so for now.

Part Two: The Casino World

Part Three: The Wizard World, The World Where Sandwiches Eat People, Medieval World

Part Four: The World Where Everyone Spoke in Questions, The World Where The Penalty For Everything Was Being Sneezed On

Part Five: The Matriarchy World, The Valley Girl World

Part Six: The Whoopee Cushion/Pie World, The Militant Hermit Crab World

Part Seven: The World with Instentainious Brain Downloads, The One Where Cedar Trees Were Extinct, The Horse/Cow War World

Which brings my count to 30, unless I made a mistake, which I probably did ;)[/color:post_uid0]

Kira

Sax did pretty good, so a few clarifications on the way I'm counting, at least. One, we're not counting the unnamed worlds where Zeke got arrested. (Key word: unnamed.) Two, my count is 28 assuming Elbonian Mafia World and Gangster World are two separate worlds.

(Hint: most of the ones sax is missing are in part 7, and some are more subtle than others.)[/color:post_uid0]

lets see...
the one with the rhinoceri
the one with the radioactive zebra stampedes
the one with the mud sharks
the one ruled by chlorofluorocarbons (i love that word)

and from part 5 the one where the guys were chained and dressed in skimpy clothes and nearly got sold off to some wealthy businesswoman's harem just because they were guys

and i beleve that brings sax's count to 28 (unless i messed up which is unlikely ;) )[/color:post_uid0]

06-25-2003, 03:04 PM
Looking at sax's list, the only ones I can see that he missed are the World that hated I, from Part 1, and the Chlorofluorocarbon Dimension (ruled by chlorofluorocarbons) from Part 7. I also didn't think that the seven worlds or the bee-eating incident should be counted, as it was unclear whether they were separate from the named worlds.

I guess that makes my count 25. (Going back over my initial list, I find I was trying to count one world twice and a couple of other references that didn't qualify.)

Correct. Good name suggestion, too -- a lot shorter than "The World Where Women Rule Over Men", which is sort of how I thought of it.

>> The Valley Girl World <<

Yes, that was the other one. More precisely, it was the world where everyone *talks* like valley girls...implying that even elderly male politicians, conservative lawyers and so forth say things like, you know, "tubular!". And, of course, "like, you know."[/color:post_uid0]
