I was chatting with a couple of forumgoers today and I had a thought: it might be fun to have an IRC chat for 5MVers sometime. Is that something you guys would be interested in trying? If so, let's see if we can agree on a time for one.[/color:post_uid0]

Internet relay chat. You use a program such as mIRC, Trillian, pIRCh, or IRCle (for Macs) to connect to a server such as irc.kdfs.net or irc.undernet.com to give an example. Then you join a chat room channel on that network. something like #startrek. It's much like IM'ing, only with a group of people.[/color:post_uid0]

The IM client Trillian (http://trillian.cc) has IRC, along with ICQ, AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. It's the only instant messenger I use now, and it's easy to use.[/color:post_uid0]

I'd very much enjoy that... It's be great to chat with the whole gang together. But, I've got no idea if I'd actually be able to attend or not. Most of the week I'm busybusybusy at university, where the IRC doesn't seem to work properly and I'm limited in time. And weekends, friday evenings an Saturday days are out - Shomer Shabbos!

So, I'm all in favor, and I'll be there if I can, but chances are I can't.[/color:post_uid0]

Plus you're in an inconvenient time zone compared to North America. What are you, GMT +3? 4?[/color:post_uid0]

catalina_marina
03-27-2004, 11:51 PM
Only +2, and I'm pretty close. :eyeroll:

Now here's a challenge. Try finding a time on which everybody here could join. That's people from North America, Europe [i:post_uid0]and[/i:post_uid0] Asia.

I'm not sure that's even possible. :([/color:post_uid0]

03-27-2004, 11:58 PM
The solution to that is simple. Rather than choosing a specific time, set aside a day and have people drop by as they are able. You may not get everyone at once but at least nobody would be completely excluded due to being in a whacky time zone.[/color:post_uid0]

Zeke
03-28-2004, 03:37 AM
That's not a bad idea. Once we pick a day, we could each post the hours we'd be able to come, so no one would have to wait around all day wondering when people would show up.[/color:post_uid0]

That'd definitely be cool.

Indeed, Sa'ar, GMT+2, and the only reason I didn't mention that as another reason for not being able to come is because I know so many of us aren't in convenient time zones to begin with. :)[/color:post_uid0]

Magdeburg, Germany[/quote:post_uid0]

Hey, that's a familiar name...didn't Magdeburg get sacked, razed and wiped off the map during the Thirty Year's War?

The only reason I know that is that it was mentioned in that alternate history novel I was telling you about, Cat, the one where the Dutch fleet gets turned to kindling.[/color:post_uid0]

Gatac
03-28-2004, 10:00 PM
Also, rumor has it that Magdeburg was originally going to be the city split in four sectors following WW2, but then the Western Allies pushed farther east and were able to shift the deal to Berlin.

Maybe it's our city-wide inferiority complex playing up.

In any event, yeah, Magdeburg was generally bent over the knee and spanked thoroughly during the Thirty Year's War. The fortifications that remain even today are worth a visit, I must say. Compare that to your usual planned, soulless American big city.

Considering IRC, I said it once, I'll say it again - yes, please. My daily schedule is far out of whack, anyway.

That reminds me of a language I used to program in called Smalltalk. Everything in the language was an object and could be assigned new values, including numbers. You could really hose your system if you did something like:
[code:1:post_uid0]8 <- 6[/code:1:post_uid0]
So 8+6=12, 82=36, log8 216 = 3. The only way to reinitialize 8 to the correct value was to say 8 <- 12-4 or something like that. If you hosed your system too much, you had to reinstall and start over from the beginning.[/color:post_uid0]

Actually, people seem to be using the IRC chat during the week too. It's seen a bunch of use yesterday and today.[/color:post_uid0]

I think it's just nice to have some place to get together with a few forumgoers. :) But maybe we should still get a planned day to get more of us there? :D[/color:post_uid0]

Knowing my luck, it'll probably end up being on the one day where I'm not free... I'll try to be there as often as I can.[/color:post_uid0]

How about Saturday as an official day, and all other days as unofficial ones? :D People will visit IRC and chat every day, but a very large number of us will be there on the official day... :D[/color:post_uid0]

Nan
04-07-2004, 09:02 AM
Why not have all unofficial days? And when Zeke, or anyone else, has announcements or anything to make they could just announce on the news page or something, like a scheduled chat?

Or use a script to show when someone was logged on to the channel?

*shrug*

Just a thought. ;)[/color:post_uid0]

I would recommend registering the channel and appointing Ops.

Be warned: sometimes the channel gets a rating of NC-17: not for children or the excessively prudish.[/color:post_uid0]

Katy, IRC is tricky and silly... Try hard enough, and you`ll get there!

Hmm... if everyone agrees, I do officially recommend Saturday for the official day for crazy 5MV chat! 18:00 GMT? Give or take a few hours... :D

And yes, the occasional NC-17 atmosphere... Or as Nan or Sa`ar put it, [i:post_uid0]5MV: After Dark[/i:post_uid0]. Good thing Cat turned 18 today, :D[/color:post_uid0]

I didn't know i needed a client, i was just trying to get the server to work as a url like java chat *blush*. Thanks to Cat i figured out what was wrong and downloaded trillian, i think i've got it figured out now. Spent some time in there this afternoon. Great fun :D

Infact i'm in there now... all alone :crying: ;)[/color:post_uid0]

Alright, I have Trillian Pro so I don't know how different it is, but we'll see. What you want to do is in the server box type irc.dwarfstar.net the port is 6667. Nickname is whatever you want your name to be, then you'll need an alternat nickname, maybe something like "nickname-" User information is what shows up after your hostname and username shows up before the hostname

ie: spots@***.comcast.com Spotted Trill

Spots is my hostname, and Spotted Trill is my user info. All these fields don't mean much of anything. You can put whatever you'd like there, or leave the defaults. After you connect to the server you'll want to open the "Status Window" for IRC. Type in /join #5mv and a new window will open for that channel. :) Hopefully that clarifies it.[/color:post_uid0]
