Unless the birthday system is still overly-screwy, I do believe it's Zeke's birthday!
Happy birthday and muchos pie :D

Happy Birthday, Zeke! Have four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. And one to grow on.

Happy birthday, dude, and shame on you for not mentioning it to anyone.
Next year's the quarter century, and it's all downhill from there.

Happy Birthday, Z.
Mince pie to you.
Or apple, if you like...
Thanks, everybody! I was expecting to spend today marking papers, but I managed to get them done yesterday (all 359 of them), so today I can take it easy.
I don't do a lot to celebrate my birthday here in Waterloo, as I don't know many people here. But I'm going to do two things I haven't done in a while. First, I'm going to order pizza tonight. I did that a lot when I first moved out, but this year I've been forcing myself to spend less on food.
The other thing I want to do is have a #5mv chat. I have no idea why we stopped doing those; I think we just sorta petered out. But Xeroc's site (http://xeroc.zapto.org/) is still working fine, so I'll be there at 9:30 EDT or so, and I hope some of you guys can join me.
I also have an update I'm working on which should be pretty cool. 23 is one thing, but surely now that I'm 24 I'll be able to keep focused and finish it....

Woo! Happy birthday, Zekeybuns!

Aw man, I hate being reminded about how old we're all getting.
Plus, when you're older than the birthday boy, you feel really wretched.

About six months.
The logs should be available somewhere. Actually, I think if you log in to Xeroc's site (by following the link in Zeke's post, which is where it was, Nate) you can read our wittiness and see how awesome we were that evening.
Nate the Great
12-18-2006, 05:34 PM
It wasn't in real time. Zeke stole a time counterfeiter from Temporal Investigations and created five minutes of fake time that you can fit an hours' worth of conversation in. How do you think he created the site? :)

Eastern Standard Time is GMT minus five hours , but I think it's six for Daylight (or something like that -- it's one of those things I'm likely to get backwards, if I'm not engaging the brain carefully.) (Edit: Sa'ar's covered that bit, I now realize.)

It'd be neat if we could set aside, let's say, two half-hours a week to meet in a chat. Two sessions just to cover the fact that not everyone is in the same timezone, ergo not everyone is awake and able to access their computers simultaneously. Point-by-point instructions and/or a FAQ would also help.

Now would seem to be the time to give some support to an old classic of the Trek fandom world. A quote from Jim Wright's Delta Blues review of Twisted:
"The usual inanities are exchanged: "You don't look a day over one," "This must have cost you a week's worth of replicator rations!" "Two, actually, but who's counting?" ad stupidum. But it's a birthday party, where IQs are traditionally checked at the door."

Happy belated birthday, Zeke! I totally suck at baking, but have a pie. Don't have one I made, though. Especially if it smells like almonds.
I have horrible timing. I missed it. Again. My bad chat-timing streak holds! But I agree with having people drop into it whenever. We need more wacky.
Nate the Great
12-20-2006, 10:48 AM
You can't have too much wacky. Unless you're at a funeral or something. But then again, I'm the kind that laughs at a funeral :). Go Semisonic!
Actually, I've only been to one funeral in my life, and I was too young to comprehend it.

Nate the Great
12-19-2007, 12:24 AM
Yeah, but why create a new thread for each birthday, every geek holiday, etc.? Seems kinda wasteful. That's one reason why I created the all-purpose PNQ thread.
ijdgaf
12-19-2007, 01:26 AM
Because some people will marvel that a forum with as little traffic as this got a thread going to three pages in less than two days, will read the whole thing and think that the time and date settings for his user CP are wrong, and will feel bad for missing a chat that in actuality happened a year ago and that he probably didn't even miss it in the first place. Unless he did.
Uh... yeah. Whoops.

In principle that seems very laudable, but I don't think that recycling old BBS threads has quite the same impact as recycling, say, aluminium cans or old tyres.

I wonder if Zeke asked for fjords when he blew out his candles. ;)
(Rats, I thought I posted my reply last night but it looks like I didn't.)
Thanks very much, guys. Like last year, I'm flattered that I didn't need to say anything about my birthday; it's even more flattering this year since the site is in such a dry period. I'm really hoping I can post something soon.
This term, however, I've had a much better excuse than usual. My thesis had to be done by December 17 (go figure), and it was close, but I made it. I'm proud of my work, and I look forward to showing it to you in a month when I've met the rest of my program requirements and it gets uploaded to UW's thesis database. It's about the Weil conjectures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weil_conjectures).
That's actually just one of the two major timesucks I've had in my life lately; the other is an absolutely crushing girlfriend snafu. You're shocked, I know...
Nate the Great
12-24-2007, 11:55 PM
I was just lucky enough to stumble across your profile for reasons that escape me at the moment, and I happened to see your birthday shortly before it actually happened.
By the way, that Weil conjectures stuff quite frankly terrifies me. And I took advanced calculus in college! Sure, I've forgotten most of it, but still!

Ditto. I can't even understand the terminology used in that article, and I'm a math major. (Okay, majoring in math in community college is a different thing from majoring in math in grad school. And I tend more to applied math than pure math anyway. But still). On the other hand, the topic does sound like a good source for jokes involving Dr. Weil from the Megaman Zero games.
Anyway, congratulations on the thesis, Zeke, and happy birthday (and Merry Christmas, while I'm at it).

As a special Christmas bonus, I'm going to annoy you with a piece of minutae. When I read "ditto," my mind immediately went to the Pokerap:

This is the same one that I know about already? Because if it was a different one then I'd be seriously impressed (though in that case you could throw some pity in there as well).
I'm pretty sure the last one we talked about was in springtime. If so, this is indeed a different one.

...Wow.
On a totally and utterly random tack, I think my dislike of the works of Phillip K. Dick is now officially irredeemable - I finished Do Androids? a few days ago and didn't like it at all. It doesn't amaze me that Blade Runner should have come out of it, though it is by far the better of the two, because as with most of Dick's work I like some of the ideas, I just can't stand the way they're presented. So there it is, the one tarnish on my gleaming armour of scientifiction nerdosity that will never go away.
