I'm not sure, but I think there are a lot of computer geeks here. So what OS do you use? Linux, UNIX (...), Windows, BeOS, MacOS...or do you use a DOS command-line interface.

Me? Well, I run WinXP, but will soon switch to a dual-boot with the latest Mandrake Linux release.[/color:post_uid0]

I have Windows M(any)E(rrors), simply because that's what the guy who pirated my OS for me had when I built my computer two summers ago. I wouldn't mind some form of UNIX-based OS, but that would require effort.[/color:post_uid0]

Heh. Which computer do you mean?

My main computer runs Debian GNU/Linux on it.
My laptop runs Win98.
The other two computers I have sitting around run MS-DOS. (Great for playing those old DOS games.)
...or are there three computers I have sitting around wth DOS on them?

At work, I have a computer running WinNT and another running WinXP.[/color:post_uid0]

erm, I don't "own" any Operating Systems, besides the evil WinME that came with the laptop, but i've run Win95, 98, ME, and XP Pro and Home ;)

I have so many blackmarket connections.[/color:post_uid0]

If you have the bandwith, go to www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) and download the ISO of Mandrake 9.1 or Red Hat 9.0 (the latest big distros out) and burn, baby, burn the ISO file as a disk image to a CD.[/color:post_uid0]

So far it's just been evil evil Microsoft I've been forced to use. The laptop I currently use has Windows '98, which is fairly horrible, and my PC (which still resides up in Scotland) runs on either ME or 2000 - I forget which.

Did I mention Microsoft's evilness yet?

I did?

I agree, Ms. President.

(I have no clue what that means. I think it was from a [i:post_uid0]SNL[/i:post_uid0] around the time of the Presidential Elections.)[/color:post_uid0]

I am running Winblows 98 as well, on my computer HellSPAWN.

Hell + SPAWN. SPAWN = Stupid Pansy-Arsed Wanker Nerdbox. Because it has a 166MHz processor and 32 megs of ram. Needless to say, LOTS of errors.

Mandrake'll be running Win2kpro prolly, and the Mandrake distro. Multi-boot. Booyeah. :)

It's Win 98 for me. I'm sort of an "everything after 98 sucks" kinda person. I've tried XP several times and hated it, 2000 just came out with that major hacker backdoor, and ME... well, it's ME. Near as I can tell the "98 or below" opinion is pretty common among the rest of the computer nerd universe too, so I kinda use that as reinforcement. That, and that all my friends with XP, ME, or 2000 on their computers have met with inexplicable cataclysmic errors.[/color:post_uid0]

Don't let the fact that I built my own system mislead you. I had considerable help. My computer geekiness extends only to showing computer illiterates how to turn the thing on and navigate Windoze.[/color:post_uid0]

So far we have:

DOS-1
Windows-
95-2

98-7 (including the Scottish Edition :suspicious:)

ME-2.5 (.5 comes from PHJ's forgetfulnes)

2000-.5 (PHJ)

NT-1

XP-5

(All these include the outcome Celeste's multiple black market connections.)

Linux:
Debian-1

Mandrake-2 (Might as well include me, I get it tomorrow)

I'm surprised there are (so far) no Mac-users on the boards. I am curious what the servers run on, however.

And Kosst, this is the first I've heard of a "everything after 98 sucks" movement. I frequent Slashdot (http://slashdot.org) and Geek.com (http://www.geek.com), and the general sentiment is "Windows bad, everything else, good." If I offended you, no offence meant. :D[/color:post_uid0]

Well, we started on a good ol' Windows 95 setup, before an upgrade to 98. Then by the time we go to ME edition, we couldn't get back to 98 fast enough...

I'll admit to not being very knowledgeable about computers, so what's all this Linux stuff about? I heard something about it a very long time ago, and apparently it's good... :) Anything that kicks Microsoft in the shins is good by me...[/color:post_uid0]

Linux is an open-sorce (anyone can modify and redistribute the source for free with little restrictions) operating system that can do what windows does a lot better, but unfourtunatly is compatible with less progarms. (Without WINE, that is.) Since it is open-source, there are may types. I read that Linux.com (http://www.linux.com) has a good list, but you can download most of them free-and perfectly legal!- at www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org). It's based on UNIX, a not-very-user-friendly OS. Normal Linux is command-line (DOS is command-line), but when paired with a program called X11, it adds a windows-like [b:post_uid0]GUI[/b:post_uid0] ([b:post_uid0]G[/b:post_uid0]raphical [b:post_uid0]U[/b:post_uid0]ser [b:post_uid0]I[/b:post_uid0]nterface). AFAIK, less than ten viruses affect Linux.

Anyone finds holes in my explanation, do what all l337 Linux users do: fix 'em![/color:post_uid0]

This seems cogent to the discussion at hand:

Microsoftium (Ms): comes in isotopes of 3, 95, 98 and 2000. Does not react with non-Ms atoms. In solid form, possesses extremely large volume per mole. Tends to decay to a useless state when the chemist isn't looking. Impossible to predict reactivity, 'cause it never reacts to the same conditions in the same way twice. Normally colourless crystalline powder, but will inexplicably turn blue and cease reacting for no apparent reason.

This is why science geekdom and satire are a bad combination.[/color:post_uid0]

Recent research has brought to light the curious fact that the isotope 95 often, when combined with the recently-named Microwordium and the unstable element Printerium, reacts explosively. :dead:[/color:post_uid0]

Good one Saar and NAHTMMM... well it made me laugh for a few minutes.

Anyway, to the question at hand (well on the screen).

The 'Good Old' Desktop Computer - Windows 98
The Laptop - Windows XP Professional (Not just your common Home edition!)

Both legitimate copies too!

I'm also close to finishing downloading Debian. I've no idea which computer it'll go on yet though. (Probably the old one, as this laptop only has about 400mb free space left).[/color:post_uid0]
