And now, at last, we're back! Not all the work of the server move is [i:post_uid0]completely[/i:post_uid0] finished (the forum colours still need a bit of tweaking, for example), but it's time to get back to updating -- and we're making our re-entrance with a bang. Here, much delayed, is the second-anniversary celebration of Five-Minute Star Trek (../startrek).
Two years, two months, and two days ago, 5MST was launched under the care of IJD GAF. It's become one of our most popular and prolific subsites -- and that's never been more obvious than today, when the Animated Series becomes the first Trek show to be [i:post_uid0]completely[/i:post_uid0] covered at 5MV. There were four episodes left, and we've divvied them up as follows:
<ul> IJD himself did "The Pirates of Orion (../startrek/fiver.php?ep=thepiratesoforion)";
Kira handled "The Terratin Incident (../startrek/fiver.php?ep=theterratinincident)";
Kristina Runyeon-Odeberg tackled "Albatross (../startrek/fiver.php?ep=albatross)" (some time ago, in fact -- we held it back for this event);
and I did "Bem (../startrek/fiver.php?ep=bem)." This one's got a twist -- I won't spoil it for you, but I suggest you read it in IE or Netscape, because Opera doesn't seem to get it quite right.
That last fiver is part of my anniversary present for 5MST, but not all of it. I've also made new subsite graphics which differentiate between the original, animated, and movie series, and I've converted the files to a new PHP-based system. That last part won't make much difference to you readers, but it makes a [i:post_uid0]big[/i:post_uid0] difference behind the scenes. (Unfortunately, I haven't got the episode blurbs copied yet, so they're blank right now. I'll get them filled in tomorrow if I have time. That may not be the only thing that pops up tomorrow, by the way.)
Some acknowledgements for the server move and the TAS event:
<ul> First off, anyone who's been following 5MV for long will have heard me mention Owen, the administrator of 3Sygma and a very good friend of mine. For three years now, 3Sygma has been the perfect host for 5MV; Owen freed us from Angelfire ads and helped with countless tech matters over the years. But it's finally come to the point where running 3Sygma is no longer a reasonable possibility for him. We at 5MV are deeply grateful to Owen for all the work he's done (including during the server move itself -- he completely knocked himself out setting up the forums and such). Ave atque vale, 3Sygma: we salute you.
All that said, I couldn't be happier about where we're going. I'm extremely grateful to Christian, overlord of TrekToday, for agreeing to host 5MV. The Trek Nation will be a great home for us; it's powerful enough to handle our bandwidth easily, and very crash-resistent. My [i:post_uid0]Enterprise[/i:post_uid0] fivers are already published there, and ties between the two sites will be getting closer in other ways. Many thanks also to Charles at TT for helping with the server move.
For today's event, I owe a huge thank you to Brinshannara (http://www.livejournal.com/users/brinshannara/), who made the animations for me on very short notice. (After all, shouldn't an animated series have at least one animated fiver?) She did an amazing job; mad props to her. Thanks also to Merlin Missy of 5MF fame for getting us in touch.
And finally (gasp, pant)... thank you to IJD GAF for running one hell of a subsite for 2-and-a-bit years and counting.
Welcome back, folks! Try the veal! We'll be here all week.[/color:post_uid0]

Hey! Good to be back!
You're right. The forum colors could use some tweaking. Posting like this is weird. :) And I think the smilies should be smaller, so that they fit within one line of text. But it all looks good otherwise.
Very nice idea, those animations in Bem. But may I suggest that you replace the entire tag-thing, including the < a > tags with the following:
[code:1:post_uid0]<img name="bem1" src="bemimg/bem-start1.gif" onclick="bem1.src='bemimg/bem-anim1.gif';" style="cursor: pointer;">[/code:1:post_uid0]
It's a lot less buggy, it uses one less image and it works in every browser that has javascript. :) Because it's javascript, you don't need the < a > tags. Because your animated gif only cycles once, you don't need an 'end' image. And I thought it would make a lot more sense if you had to click on them, instead of hover over them.
Take a look.[/color:post_uid0]

Thanks for the congrats everyone; I've got a few of my own.
* First, the writers. Not just for today's update, but for all of TAS. From Kira and Zeke who just now got to try their hand, to Marc, Derek, and Kristina. Kristina, in particular, has contributed more than any other guest writer. It's only fitting that she be part of these ending festivities.
* Next, the readers. It's pretty great to be able to expose TAS to plenty of people who have never seen the show before, and it's wonderful to be able to contribute to those who have.
* Yeah, these are pretty TAS-centric -- so thanks for everyone else. Even if you've ignored the animated stuff and concentrated on the classic series, you're still thankworthy. It's been a great 2 years, and here's to many more -- unless we keep going at this rate ;)
* Finally, here's to Zeke. It was Zeke who originally proposed the TAS section. When I asked him to do 5MST, it hadn't even occurred to me to five the animated stuff. Zeke suggested it, and here we are today. The graphics look great, the layout is perfect. Thanks for everything man. You're hillarious, you're (getting ;) ) organized, and above all, you're a good friend.

Well, that all depends on who you talk to.
It's funny that the same HTML produces three different results:
<dl><dt>IE</dt><dd>[img:post_uid0]http://dadean.org/~spurk/images/ie-subsite.PNG[/img:post_uid0]
As you can see, it has equal-sized bars in the middle on either side of the image.</dd><dt>Mozilla</dt><dd>[img:post_uid0]http://dadean.org/~spurk/images/mozilla-subsite.PNG[/img:post_uid0]
Mozilla puts the bars in the middle on either side of the main image, but they're of different sizes.
I pointed this out once before, and even investigated and found out that according to the W3C (HTML standards body), this rendering is correct because when you use percentages to scale images you aren't scaling the size of the image with respect to itself or with respect to the space available, but to the [i:post_uid0]remaining[/i:post_uid0] space available.
In the example above, the three images have widths of 17%, 60%, 17%. Opera and IE both take the total width of the page and scale the first image to 17% of that total, the second to 60% of that same total, and the third to 17% of that same total, leaving the first and third of equal size. However, Mozilla scales the first image to 17% of the total space, but the second is scaled to 60% [i:post_uid0]of the remaining 83% left[/i:post_uid0], and the third image is scaled to 17% of the remaining amount left, which comes out to 5.644% of the total space.</dd><dt>Opera</dt><dd>[img:post_uid0]http://dadean.org/~spurk/images/opera-subsite.PNG[/img:post_uid0]
Opera seems to put the bars on the bottom of the main image (but they are the same size). That would suggest that Opera uses a baseline that it renders all images above, while Mozilla and IE, allow images to go below their baselines as well as above it.
A little experimentation proves my theory. If you change the middle image HTML to read:
[code:1:post_uid0]<img style="vertical-align:middle" border=0 align=center src="../images/5mst.png" alt="5MNG" width="60%">[/code:1:post_uid0]
That should fix the alignment problem in Opera.</dd></dl>[/color:post_uid0]

I don't usually hate on the W3C, but in that case, Microsoft seems to have the better interpretation. In percentage of *remaining* space? That's not only counterintuitive, it doesn't make too much sense on it's own either. I mean, really, what's the use?

Well, I think it would be nice to have a way to do both. There are times when you want to have your images take up 17% of the screen space so it will scale well regardless of how big or small someone's browser is, but there could come a time when 85% of the screen is already claimed and then the image forces a sideways scroll. And there are other times when you want an image to take up 100% of the remaining space even if it's as much as 50% or as little as 5%.[/color:post_uid0]
That's why I always make my pages about 750 px wide, unless I plan on using javascript redirectors. ;)
But then, I'm a webdesigner. Crossbrowser incompatibility enrages me. :)[/color:post_uid0]

It's still mostly IE that enrages me, though. So many people use it, so we can't ignore it. But it won't even accept all CSS2 selectors.
That's why standards are good. So us webdesigners won't have to jump through hoops to make websites crossbrowser compatible.
By the way: Zeke, thanks for fixing my account. :)[/color:post_uid0]
I switched to relative image sizes the first time I redesigned 5MV, when I was on a real browser-independence kick. I still think that's an important factor, but what became increasingly clear to me over the years is that resized images [i:post_uid0]suck[/i:post_uid0]. The loss in quality is huge. That's why I'm phasing out the relative sizing: the front page now lets the images take their natural sizes, and under the new PHP system I'll be doing the same with our other pages.[/color:post_uid0]
PHP is your friend. :D
I haven't used tables in a long time, either. I like using container divs--centered by setting right and left margins to auto--with smaller divs inside.
If you make the width of the Jar div around 750-775 pixels, it won't be too big for 800x600 and won't be unreadably tiny on 1024x768.
In a perfect world, CSS could do what JavaScript does. Then I would be mighty indeed. :D[/color:post_uid0]

I always use relative measurements when I create pages. I use <code>em</code>s and <code>ex</code>s or percents. That way it scales well regardless of font size or browser size.[/color:post_uid0]
Doesn't work as well with images, though. :/[/color:post_uid0]
