View Full Version : Block 29 - Goodbye, Mr. Anderson

Know what? We're so close now, I think I'll just give you guys the last couple of blocks to work on while I'm in Ottawa.

The Nebuchadnezzar crew are interrupted in their viewing of Neo by the proximity alarm. Sentinels are coming in fast. Morpheus readies the EMP, but is determined not to use it until the absolute last moment -- because when he fires it, their equipment shuts down and Neo dies. He has faith that Neo will make it, but he keeps his hand on the key.

Still in a dead run, Neo grabs a bystander's cell phone and calls Tank. (The bystander promptly becomes Smith.) Tank reports that he's got "a patch on an old exit." This is one of the coolest details in the movie -- it's not said outright, but the old exit is the same hotel room where the police corner Trinity at the start of the movie. Furthermore, it's room 303, and Neo's apartment was room 101. Make of that what you will.

Anyway, Tank steers Neo to the exit, helping him dodge the Agents. (By now Smith, Brown, and Jones are all after him.) By the time he reaches the hotel, they're right behind him -- and worse, the Sentinels aren't just close anymore, they're on the hull and burrowing in. Neo makes it to the room, hears the phone ringing, yanks the door open....

....and dies, shot point-blank by Agent Smith. (In Neo's worst bit of bad luck yet, there must have been someone in the room for Smith to possess.) The crew watch in disbelief and horror as Neo's monitor flatlines.

This is another 2-3 scene block. Synopsis here (http://www.hackvan.com/pub/stig/scripture/matrix/35-sentinels-attack.txt) and a bit of here (http://www.hackvan.com/pub/stig/scripture/matrix/36-he-is-the-one.txt).

Actually my interpretation of the scene goes like this:

Brown, Jones, and Smith chase Neo, but when Neo gets to the hotel, Smith looks up and notices that it is the same hotel as the one at the beginning of the movie (which, I agree, is an awesome detail). Smith realizes that Neo must be going for the room Trinity was originally in at the start of the film, so he abandons the pursuit and goes straight for room 303, surmising it must be Neo's destination. Alternatively, if there isn't enough time for Smith's current body to get to the room, he can certainly leap into the body of the closest person to room 303 and wait for Neo there, but I've always taken Smith's observation of the hotel to mean that he knows that Neo's going to room 303.

That, or he heard the phone ringing in room 303

Tank: Domino's Pizza?
Neo: I'll have a Pepperoni with an extra helping of GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Tank: Right on! Delivery in three minutes, or we pay for your funeral.
Neo: I gotta stop ordering from these folks.

Tank: Morpheus, we need to use the Hammer of Smiting now.
Morpheus: Don't worry, he'll make it out.
Smith: BOOM!
Neo: GAK!
Tank: Yup. Feet first.

Finally saw The Matrix for the first time last week, and am proud to be here, offering up my sole idea, based on the fact that you can't go through all of The Matrix without a "Marc's Spoon" reference, can you?

Neo: Exit! EXIT!
Tank: Right on it. Now, if I can just use my handy tricoder to find one...
Trinity: Tank, that's a spoon!
Neo: Trinity, Hammer of Smiting, now.
Trinity: No, wait. That really is a tricoder!
Tank: Haha! Fooled you! There is no spoon!

Neo: (sticks tongue out at Agents) I'm gonna make it!--oh, crap. GAK!
Crew: *gasp!*
Sentinals: Resistance is futile.
(long pause)
Morpheus: Hmm. I'd love to see the writers plausibly dig themselves out of this one.

EDIT: Added "of Smiting."

I think this might be a good time for Neo to practice what he has learned... ;)

I agree that "Pseudo-GAK!" should be used here on account of the earlier block with Tank. That said:

Neo: Tank! Exit! NOW!
Tank: What?! I can't hear you over this drilling!
Neo: This is no time for cellphone jokes!
Tank: Yes, I think these Sentinels on us can choke us with those tentacles!
Neo: TANK!
Tank: You're welcome. How'd you know I found an exit for you?

Neo: Safe!
Smith: Out!
Neo: Kill the umpire!
Smith: No, I think I'll kill you instead.
Neo: Pseudo-GAK!
Smith: Something's wrong here, but I'm too arrogant and deterministic to consider that, so oh well!

Vote time!

A few good ones for the phone call - I favor one of:

Gatac's Pizza Block:
Neo: Run run run run GRAB run run dial...
Tank: Domino's Pizza?
Neo: I'll have a Pepperoni with an extra helping of GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Tank: Right on! Delivery in three minutes, or we pay for your funeral.
Neo: I gotta stop ordering from these folks.

KZiti's Pervert Block:
Neo: Huff! Puff! Gasp! Run! Huff!
Tank: Hello? Who is this?
Neo: Huff! Puff! Gasp! Need- Gasp!
Tank: Ugh! I told you to stop calling me, I'm not interested! Pervert!

For Smith shooting Neo, I vote for my own:

Standback's Game-Over Block:
Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

I can go for the pizza block. I strongly agree with NAH's opinion that we really should use a "Pseudo-GAK!" block of some kind for the second, though. If you don't like the two already presented, I'd like to hear some others of that sort. -- Pteryx

The Pseudo- Gak can easily be inserted into "Game Over":

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: Pseudo-GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

or:
Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: Yeah, um, how'd that go...? Pseudo-GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

Not sure if it adds or not.

I vote for my version of the phone call:

Neo: Exit!

But I think it's pretty obvious I'm outvoted there.

I do like standback's Game Over idea better than mine, though:

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: Pseudo-GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

This is one place where I'll gladly go with the majority:

Neo: Run run run run GRAB run run dial...
Tank: Domino's Pizza?
Neo: I'll have a Pepperoni with an extra helping of GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Tank: Right on! Delivery in three minutes, or we pay for your funeral.
Neo: I gotta stop ordering from these folks.

And this works too, Standback -- good call:

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: Pseudo-GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: Pseudo-GAK!
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

-one thing...
as opposed to Tank, Neo actually dies but comes back to life, so "Pseudo-GAK!" doesn't really work.

So how about "GAK?"? that might work better...

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Neo: GAK?
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/N)

PointyHairedJedi

I dunno. I don't think it really makes that much of a difference either way. Sure, just plain "GAK!"may be more a more technically accurate reflection of the film, but the whole "pseudo" business makes a good running gag, plus is a nice sort of commentary on the writing if you care to analyse it that deeply; sure, we all know he dies, but even when watching it for the first time, did anyone actually for a moment doubt that Neo would somehow survive anyway? A subtle critique of inevitable cliché, if you will. :D

KillerGodMan

point...

but still... "Psuedo GAK!" seems wrong for some reason...

Almost-but-not-entirely-quite-unlike-GAK?

I just like 'GAK?'

the way I see it...

Smith: Bang!
Neo: GAK?

Morpheus: GAK?
Trinity: That means I get to bring him back to life if I kiss him

-something based on that...

GAC!, maybe?
Smith: Bang!
Neo: GAC!

Morpheus: GAC?
Trinity: That means I get to...etc.

or, if you wanted to use the 'game over' one...

Smith: Game Over, Mister Anderson.
Matrix: 9 CREDITS. CONTINUE? (Y/GAK!)

Just seems more... elegant, I guess.

Hmm... I still think "Pseudo-GAK!" is best for running gag purposes, but something else could be used -- if we make it clear that he's misremembering:

Neo: Uh, crap, how did that go?... Um... Almost-GAK!

Though I also like whoiam's take on the "9 Credits" block. -- Pteryx
