View Full Version : Forum remodelling

So, as you've noticed, I finally got around to modding this forum. Here are the new features:

Member titles are back
Topics can now have descriptions
You can now save posts as drafts (you can see and edit your drafts on a new page which also shows your recent posts)
Members can supply their birthdays; the forum splash page gives seven days' warning of an upcoming birthday
Country flags are back
The board keeps track of how many topics you've started and can search for them from your profile
When replying to a PM, the one you're replying to is shown below
Usernames are now profile links when viewing a thread
The memberlist shows when a member last posted (but doesn't let you sort that category, which was what I wanted... I'll work on it)
At the bottom of each topic is a search box that searches within the topic
When viewing a forum, clicking on the number of posts in a thread gives you a popup listing the users who have posted in it and how many times each
Finally, a mod making it easier for me to edit the FAQ, which I intend to do so as to make it less generic
How did I do all these so fast? Well... remember when I said I wasn't going to use EasyMod this time? I changed my mind. It's much less work this way (but still some -- I have to edit the instructions manually to resolve conflicts between mods), and I think I have a better understanding of how phpBBs work now. Besides, even in the worst case scenario of everything getting fouled up again, I now know how easy it is to clean the database and reinstall the forum software without losing any of our posts.

Anyway, those are the mods. You'll notice one other change if you look closely at your profile: I've made a clone of subSilver called subFiver, now selected by default. This is where I'm going to rebuild the 5M.net skin. It may not be soon (I'm thinking of getting someone with actual experience to help), but it's coming.

I dunno. However, I agree that with the current administration, I have to wonder too.

Zeke
01-15-2006, 04:19 AM
All right, can this NOT turn into politics for no reason? Remember how I lost friends when I dared to attempt a civil political discussion thread in my own forum? Is idiotic sniping going to turn out better, or is it allowed on only one side, or what?

Anyway. I found a simple fix for the flag thing: I've simply removed the country-name text and left the flag. I think it looks better that way anyhow.

As for saving drafts, it's just there for those who want it. Those who don't will get used to the extra button.

Zeke

Yes, it was Scooter and e of pi I was talking to. And Scooter, I appreciate the edit, but it wasn't necessary -- I was just cutting off any further politics, not telling you to remove what was there. That usually just leads to confusion, as we just saw.

Okay, why is Puerto Rico a country?

I've got a better question: why are you from Puerto Rico?

Florida, Puerto Rico, what's the difference? You know, besides distance, statehood, shape, population, climate, and a number of other things? Otherwise, they're virtually identical!

Whoa! I forgot to list one of the coolest mods! It's on the list now (second last item).

I've successfully added custom titles to the memberlist and even made them sortable. Unfortunately, the last post column, which I really wanted sortable, is coded in a way that makes it much harder -- I would basically have to rework that whole mod. I may in fact do so, but not till I get some other things done.

(For those interested in the details, most columns in the memberlist are simply called up from the user database, and can be sorted before listing anyone. The last post column, however, is implemented by searching the post database to see when the given user last posted. Thus it can't be sorted in advance. To make that possible, I'll need to add a field to the user database storing the user's last post time, and get it to update each time someone posts. It won't be terrifically difficult -- more like challenging -- but it probably won't be quick either.)

N00b question about why Zeke was the 108th to join.

Zeke
01-15-2006, 10:34 PM
Simple: When we first moved from iB to phpBB, Owen did an admirable job of importing the member data so nobody was left behind. Making me an admin again, however, required him to delete the old me and have me register again. I think that's how it went, anyway.

I've made one more addition to the memberlist: country flags now appear on it. They're even sortable. Unfortunately, "no country" is stored as NULL, which for some reason falls alphabetically under N rather than outside the normal alphabet. Thus there's a very large gap in the middle of the country sorting. I'll fix that when I know more about how this particular NULL is implemented.

I think the pretzels should stage a mass uprising against Bush Jr. Sure, there was that one suicide attacker, but evidently the Secret Service were prepared for the eventuality that a lone pretzel might attempt something like that. But if they were to attack en masse, then Bush would go down for sure, and I for one will welcome our new pretzel overlords!

That's just crazy enough to work!

However, another idea:

Create a "Guest" login, and have the password clearly marked on the site. Something like "soon", and have Zeke's email be set up as the destination for notification of password changes, just in case. Then, close all non-member posts. Guests who want to ask a question can login to guest, however, spambots won't be able to.

whoiam

More importantly, the permissions for starting threads and replying to threads can be set seperately in phpBB. So it not only can work, it doesn't even require another forum mod.

Kristina

Just out of curiosity, are they posting from a specific IP address or anything? If they are, then address blocking instead of disabling anonymous posting, maybe?

...Also, is this anything to do with the "Mouth of Moron" affair last winter, and the threats of mildly annoying you?

Who, Nikhil? I doubt it. He doesn't have enough ability.

Thanks, e. I've commandeered the account (I figure I should administer it -- hope you don't mind) and given it an appropriate avatar.

No, I was expecting you to. May I suggest "Just Passing Through..." as a member title?

Buh? Who, what, when, where, why, how, wherefore, whence?

Nevermind. I was mistaken. A few months ago one of my friends decided to bug me by posting some rather stupid stuff here. Obviously, you were thinking of somebody else.

Yes, I was. It must've been shortly after I joined, IIRC...there were a coupla trolls, one called enterprise12345, and the other called itself the Mouth of Sauron, also IIRC. There was a lot of levelling of threats against Zeke, that they would troll the board, overload it, etc etc ad nauseam. The locked threads are probably floating around somewhere...

No, I do believe that Zeke used the Hammer of Smiting on the threads, and smited them riteously from existance.

Really? I can't remember...Did he do it on the Mouth of Moron's last one?

Hmm. It seems that while we're still getting spambots, there's an easy way to tell them apart from real members: they somehow have one topic credited to them even though they've never started any. It's kind of unsettling that that's possible; I'll have to ask about it. At least it's useful for quick identification, though.

I know him. St. Spambot of Url. Patron saint of unwelcome visitors, leet speke bastardization, and commercials before movies.

Possibly not one of the more popular canonizations that the Church has ever performed.

You see, this is why I don't like the roman cathl- cath-

that's another reason why I don't like them, besides them deliberately picking a name designed to be impossible to spell.

We seem to have a problem with avatars. I suspect it's related to the server work AntonyF did recently. I'll check with him.

Zeke, did you ban yourself, or is it just a title/avatar combination intended for pleasure?

I must confess, at a first glance that avatar looked like a rather bizarre endorsement of the Scottish National Party.

Hey now, that's a little unfair. Just because my cognitive processes are largely determined by the use of a Magic 8-Ball doesn't mean I can't think for myself!

"Very doubtful".

Oh. Maybe you are right then after all. :(

I'd suggest a Turing test to filter these things out, but recently I tried signing up for myspace and kept failing it.
