As mentioned in the June 18th update, although there are no official contests with the staff feature this year, "Sleapers" does have two sets of hidden (and not-so-hidden) elements for your guessing pleasure.<ul>[*]There is at least one cameo per episode by a forumgoer. Â Some of these are tricky, so I doubt any one person can get them all but you're welcome to try and/or speculate.[*]Secondly, IJD mentions in part 1 that we've been to at least thirty worlds, by his count. Â We've dropped mentions of worlds we've "sleaped" to, so try and list or count them all. (This includes not only references worlds, but worlds actually visited during the feature, btw.)
A couple days after part 7 has been published we'll reveal the cameos and list the worlds we visited. Go nuts![/color:post_uid0]

Sa'ar Chasm 06-18-2003 04:39 AM

Well, Akili in Part 2 is quite clearly our beloved Nan.

The Baron could be anyone, although I have a strange suspicion that it might be Kira herself.

Part 1 has me stumped, and Part 4 isn't much better.

I don't think I like this game.[/color:post_uid0]

Saxamaphone 06-18-2003 07:23 AM

Fun little name game, ain't it? Â I think I've got everyone so far (that is, one per fiver, then I'm set) - so I'll concentrate my attention on the place "slept" too --

Or is that "sleeped" too? Â Hmmm...

Well, we have the two worlds the story so far takes place in -- the one with the police station and Shariff Dean, and the Mirror Universe. Plus the one they're from originally.

Then, mentioned briefly --

[b:post_uid0]Part One:[/b:post_uid0] Elbonian Mafia Universe, Nazi World, The Gangster World, The Dimension of Pain, The World Without Shrimp, Backwards Went Time Where One The, Giant Mice Land (Disneyworld ;)), Seven different places Zeke got arrested (including the bee-eating incident) - i'm not sure if those are separate worlds or not, but I'll assume so for now.

[b:post_uid0]Part Two:[/b:post_uid0] The Casino World - (I musta missed some there)

[b:post_uid0]Part Three:[/b:post_uid0] The Wizard World, The World Where Sandwiches Eat People, Medieval World

[b:post_uid0]Part Four:[/b:post_uid0] The World Where Everyone Spoke in Questions, The World Where The Penalty For Everything Was Being Sneezed On

That's just so far, bringing my count up to: 24

Anyone else?[/color:post_uid0]

Part One: the one the other Zeke came from

(Originally, I'd assumed that Akili was just a play on alkaline.)
As for the other cameos, I'd have to hunt around in the guest fivers to check people's names. Aki, Purnell and Windham aren't ringing any bells right now.[/color:post_uid0]

Marc 06-18-2003 02:58 PM

>> As for the other cameos, I'd have to hunt around in the guest fivers to check people's names. Aki, Purnell and Windham aren't ringing any bells right now. <<

A complicating factor is that not all guest writers use their real names in the copyright notice at the bottom of the published fivers. Until Zeke told me, I had no idea who Purnell is, even though he's written material for 5MNG. Heck, not even all the *staff* writers use their real names: IJD's been a fellow section head for over a year and I *still* don't know his real name -- assuming he has one. :) Even just finding out what the pseudonym "IJD GAF" *means* took quite a while.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 06-18-2003 03:57 PM

Well duh, if it was that easy it wouldn't be much of a challenge. :D However, some (but not all) of the cameos have associated clues so that even if you can't put the name to the forumgoer you may be able to guess who it is.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 04:50 PM

Well, the "Baron" might be Zeke. Which could mean that "Windham" is Kira.

I've noticed that at one point in the fourth part it says "Winham" instead of "Windham", though I'm guessing that's just a typo.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 06-18-2003 04:59 PM

None of the cameos are by any of the staff -- they're all forumgoers.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 05:02 PM

In that case, is the "Baron" by any chance me?

I've got no clue as to any of the others though. My guess for "Windham" had to do with the [i:post_uid0]Minority Report[/i:post_uid0] fiver, but I guess I was looking in the wrong place.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 06-18-2003 05:06 PM

Not unless you don't know your own name.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 05:12 PM

Well, I thought what with my [i:post_uid0]Dune[/i:post_uid0] obesssion and all....

Oh well. That begs the question - do we have nobility among us?[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 06-18-2003 05:36 PM

[quote:post_uid0="Marc"]A complicating factor is that not all guest writers use their real names in the copyright notice at the bottom of the published fivers.[/quote:post_uid0]
Well, that's good to know. One of my main concerns about potentially fiving something was the possibility that I'd have to put my name on the page for all to see. ;)

For some strange reason, PHJ, that "Baron" business made me think of you too, but I couldn't figure out why.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 05:45 PM

Subliminal messaging.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 06-18-2003 05:55 PM

In the interest of fairness, I've tweaked my part 3 since the Baron is (or was) the only cameo without any sort of hint. Â For all the others, you're on your own as there are clues.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 06:00 PM

Ah. It's gotta be Celeste.[/color:post_uid0]

Celeste 06-18-2003 06:52 PM

I know who Baron is! I know I know!! hahaha (God I need to check the forums more often ;_; )[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-18-2003 08:10 PM

It's not you? But it's gotta be! I mean, come on! [i:post_uid0]Bernie[/i:post_uid0]?[/color:post_uid0]

I knew who Baron was even before the tweak -- that one was easy. ;) One of the other ones took some work, though.[/color:post_uid0]

Celeste 06-18-2003 08:54 PM

Well I never said it wasn't me, but I'm not saying it's me, either. Anyway I have the cameo in part 4 figured out.. I think. Who is it that always makes math jokes and is always here? :D

Oh question. Are all the cameos someone who's written fivers? Or just come to the forums?[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 06-18-2003 09:03 PM

I find it funny how many people attribute the "loser who practially lives on the internet and makes bad math jokes" line to themselves. However, that's not a cameo -- all the cameos are actual characters.

And no, the cameos are not necessarily guest writers.[/color:post_uid0]

Well, I don't think they actually traveled there...

Yeah, I remember Cele's name being Baron back when in the old forum, we were talking about titles (King, Duke, Viceroy, etc.) and PHJ brought up Baron and Cele clung to that one with an explanation.[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 06-18-2003 11:12 PM

I think I remember that too, Sax. Wasn't her claim based on ancestry or [u:post_uid0]something[/u:post_uid0] involving her last name?

Sa'ar Chasm 06-19-2003 12:04 AM

I gave up a long time ago.

And for what it's worth, my ancestors were barons, or at least people with my last name were.

I think.[/color:post_uid0]

Celeste 06-19-2003 02:10 AM

Yes yes, my last name is Baron. har dee har har. :P But my family is anything but royal. Farmers and factory workers from Canaduh we are. PHJ I'm glad you think that i'm from nobilty. :D[/color:post_uid0]

Nan 06-19-2003 03:10 AM

I actually kind of am from nobility. ;)

The Blawdzewicz (don't try to pronounce it) family has a coat of arms and everything. :)

Damn Nazis, Germans, Russians, Austro-Hungarians, etc.

BTW, it's pronounced ah-KEE-lee. Not ACK-ah-LAI.[/color:post_uid0]

ijdgaf 06-19-2003 03:53 AM

Anyway, it would've been "A[b:post_uid0]l[/b:post_uid0]kali" if I was referencing the science term ;)[/color:post_uid0]

Sa'ar Chasm 06-19-2003 04:26 PM

So does the Harty family for that matter.

No Barons? Oh well. The best we can probably hope for is a Viscount then.[/color:post_uid0]

[quote:post_uid0]No Barons? Oh well. The best we can probably hope for is a Viscount then.[/quote:post_uid0]

I can possibly offer you an Earl or a Prince (although the Prince is under the Irish nobility system, which simply called everyone King).

The Maguires were just a step below the provincial kings (Ulster, Munster, etc) and two steps below the High Kingd (Ard-righ). They were tribal kings, and were lords over several clans. Fermanagh was their playground.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 06-19-2003 05:33 PM

A bit like Dwarvish Kings then?[/color:post_uid0]

Celeste 06-19-2003 05:36 PM

My boyfriend has a coat of arms and all that kind of cool stuff. He also has a nice fluffy trust fund. ;)[/color:post_uid0]

[quote:post_uid0]A bit like Dwarvish Kings then?[/quote:post_uid0]

Well, they had shorter lifespans, less impressive bears and didn't sing songs about gold.

When the English came *pause for vitriolic cursing* the toadies among the Gaelic nobility got English titles, and the patriots (read: traditional rivals of the toadies) got exiled.[/color:post_uid0]
