June 14
Today is almost the conclusion of the 5MDW launch, featuring the following fivers.... <ul>[*]Fifth Doctor: "Castrovalva," the SCMoll fiver I couldn't find a copy of yesterday.[*]Seventh Doctor: "Survival," by Scooter.[*]Eighth Doctor: Nothing, since he was only in the movie, and we already have that one.[*]Ninth (Current) Doctor: "The Unquiet Dead," Scooter's first crack at the new show, and....[*]Ninth Doctor: "Dalek," SCMoll's first crack. Longtime readers will be stunned that I'm letting him live after some of the stuff he pulls in this one....[/list]Why is this only almost the end? Because my own contribution, the pilot of the new series, is only half done. (Tonight was the best chance I'll have for a while to see Star Wars: Episode III, which I did, and which was spectacular.) I'll finish it as soon as I can and toss on top of the relevant day's update. And updates there will be -- oh my, yes. Because tomorrow* our fifth-anniversary celebration is here to kick your butt from here to Gallifrey. Be here -- and spread the word. (By the way, since the DW event does mostly end today, I hereby welcome Scooter, the newest member of the 5MV family. Congratulations on your new subsite; may you and it both prosper.) * Not Thursday. I forgot what day of the week yesterday was. |
Ooh, with "Survival" the classic series has been bookended!

Thank you for your mercy, Zeke. (Adam's name is strangely absent from the dialogue of "Dalek.") |
Dangit! Will I ever convince this board to actually remember me?

I saw nothing....... T3hse fiv3rs= t3h 1337! :P |
Yes, welcome, as Zeke said. I don't think I've said that yet. You've now made watching Doctor Who something more of a priority on my list. Too bad it doesn't air in the US. Someone will need to tell me what DVDs to add to my Netflix queue and in what order.

It's on CBC. If you get CBC International, it might be on there.
Also, there's always the torrent continuum. ;) |

Good/important An Unearthly Child - you need to at least see the first episode. Power of the Daleks- is supposed to be good, though I haven't seen this one....... the Spearhead from Space - very good, although a bit '70s tacky...... Frontier In Space, and Planet of the Daleks go together cuz they've got a direct link, and are good, but see previous comment about '70s tacky.... Ark In Space, Revenge of the Cybermen, the Sontaran Experiment and Genesis of the Daleks are a mini-arc and should be watched in roughly that order (can't remember it exactly) the Robots of Death, City of Death Logopolis/Castrovalva The Curse of Fenric. These are all the ones I can think of at the moment. Funny/bad The Horns of Nimon The Invasion of Time Dimensions in Time Inside the Spaceship on NO account get "the Daleks", and if you do, do NOT attempt to watch it at one sitting. It will bore you comatose. |
Good list. Of course, everyone's suggestion list is going to be different. :)
I usually recommend that strangers to "Doctor Who" start with "The Ribos Operation," because it's funny, dramatic, and very well acted. After that I would look at "An Unearthly Child," "Caves of Androzani," and maybe "The Aztecs" if you're in the mood for a "historical." "Robots of Death" is good. "Curse of Fenric," yes. I don't think "Power of the Daleks" is available on DVD (I think there are missing episodes still), but "The Mind Robber" is just coming out, and that's a very good Second Doctor story. Doctor Who: The Movie (1996) is not available in the U.S., which is a shame only because it's a bridge between the Classic Series and the New Series. Valium is so right about "The Daleks" [the First Doctor Story, not to be confused with the Ninth Doctor story "Dalek"], and the same is true for the equally boring 1964 Peter Cushing film adaptation. Anyway it's important to remember that Classic Doctor Who is usually 4 to 6 25-minute episodes, 90 to 135 minutes. They take the time to develop things without rushing, even if the story is directed at a good brisk pace. Sit down with the patience of starting a movie, not a TV show. The New Series is coming out on DVD in a few months, but is also easily downloadable if you have something like BitTorrent, not that I recommend filesharing the intellectual property of the BBC of course. But do go and look at one of the DVDs I mentioned, and tell me what you think. |
The missing words in "Dalek" have been restored. It was a glitch in my formatting program.

Aaron Aardvark - I've gotta ask, intentional Dredd reference, or is it just a coincidence?
It's all good though (apart from "Terry nation-state" - bad SCMoll, bad!). :D |

However, "Aardvark, Azaz the Unabridged" is of course a reference to "The Phantom Tollbooth." |
^ You know, I really should have gotten that, but it's been far too long since I've read it. So many books, so little time, you know?

Just thought I'd mention that 5MDW is getting some trickles of feedback on the web, and the story especially singled out for props is SCMoll's "Dalek," and rightly so. Fantastic!
