June 14

Today is almost the conclusion of the 5MDW launch, featuring the following fivers....
<ul>[*]Fifth Doctor: "Castrovalva," the SCMoll fiver I couldn't find a copy of yesterday.[*]Seventh Doctor: "Survival," by Scooter.[*]Eighth Doctor: Nothing, since he was only in the movie, and we already have that one.[*]Ninth (Current) Doctor: "The Unquiet Dead," Scooter's first crack at the new show, and....[*]Ninth Doctor: "Dalek," SCMoll's first crack. Longtime readers will be stunned that I'm letting him live after some of the stuff he pulls in this one....[/list]Why is this only almost the end? Because my own contribution, the pilot of the new series, is only half done. (Tonight was the best chance I'll have for a while to see Star Wars: Episode III, which I did, and which was spectacular.) I'll finish it as soon as I can and toss on top of the relevant day's update. And updates there will be -- oh my, yes. Because tomorrow* our fifth-anniversary celebration is here to kick your butt from here to Gallifrey.

Be here -- and spread the word.

(By the way, since the DW event does mostly end today, I hereby welcome Scooter, the newest member of the 5MV family. Congratulations on your new subsite; may you and it both prosper.)

* Not Thursday. I forgot what day of the week yesterday was.

Ooh, with "Survival" the classic series has been bookended!

I have a feeling this new nemesis will last as long the show itself.

Ace: Yeah, it sucked to be you even before they made you cat food.
And I enjoyed Cancellation Hell.

Quote:

Rose: And what a bust that was. Doctor, we can go anyplace, anytime! Take me somewhere exciting, scintillating, and sophisticated.
Doctor: 19th-century Wales it is, then.
The bit with How the Grinch, etc. was quite amusing as well.

Thank you for your mercy, Zeke.

(Adam's name is strangely absent from the dialogue of "Dalek.")

SCMoll 06-15-2005 05:24 AM

Dangit! Will I ever convince this board to actually remember me?

Adric: He doesn't want you at all. He's after somebody called the Doctor.
Tegan: The Doctor?
Adric: The Master has set a trap for him.
Tegan: And we're the bait.
Hee hee -- Castrovalva as Ep V!

Quote:

Tegan: The guards are distracted. Now's our chance to escape with the Doctor.
Nyssa: But what about Adric?
Tegan: The way I see it we have two choices: we can leave him behind, or we can let him catch up. I really don't see what there is to debate.
And so much pain could have been avoided :)

Quote:

Van Statten: I call it the Metaltron. Clever, eh?
The Doctor: Is it made of metal?
Van Statten: How'd you guess?
The Doctor: After you've been to the water world of Marinus, met the robots of Mechanus, and crossed the deserts of Aridius, you start to catch on.
lol :D

Dalek: behold my cunning plan
Dalek: it is so cunning u could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel
Dalek: lol i made a blackadder reference
Guards: GAK!
Dalek: i am 1337 h4xx0r!
Quote:

The Doctor: That's what you get for interfacing without protection. You have been infected with the dreaded virus deus.exe.machina.
Dalek: gak!!!!111!!!

Thanks Zeke. Thanks everyone. I'm glad to have come ... home. (sniff) "It's been a long road, getting fr--" (WHAM!) Hey, who whacked me with the Hammer of Smiting?

Nan 06-15-2005 06:20 AM

I saw nothing.

Ahem.

Congrats, Scoot! ;)

Yes, welcome, as Zeke said. I don't think I've said that yet. You've now made watching Doctor Who something more of a priority on my list. Too bad it doesn't air in the US. Someone will need to tell me what DVDs to add to my Netflix queue and in what order.

Nan 06-15-2005 01:58 PM

It's on CBC. If you get CBC International, it might be on there.

Also, there's always the torrent continuum. ;)

Probably best to categorise into the good/of import, the bad, and the so bad they're funny.

Good/important
An Unearthly Child - you need to at least see the first episode.
Power of the Daleks- is supposed to be good, though I haven't seen this one.......
the Spearhead from Space - very good, although a bit '70s tacky......
Frontier In Space, and
Planet of the Daleks go together cuz they've got a direct link, and are good, but see previous comment about '70s tacky....
Ark In Space, Revenge of the Cybermen, the Sontaran Experiment and Genesis of the Daleks are a mini-arc and should be watched in roughly that order (can't remember it exactly)
the Robots of Death,
City of Death
Logopolis/Castrovalva
The Curse of Fenric.
These are all the ones I can think of at the moment.

Funny/bad
The Horns of Nimon
The Invasion of Time
Dimensions in Time
Inside the Spaceship

on NO account get "the Daleks", and if you do, do NOT attempt to watch it at one sitting. It will bore you comatose.

Scooter 06-15-2005 03:19 PM

Good list. Of course, everyone's suggestion list is going to be different. :)

I usually recommend that strangers to "Doctor Who" start with "The Ribos Operation," because it's funny, dramatic, and very well acted.

After that I would look at "An Unearthly Child," "Caves of Androzani," and maybe "The Aztecs" if you're in the mood for a "historical." "Robots of Death" is good. "Curse of Fenric," yes. I don't think "Power of the Daleks" is available on DVD (I think there are missing episodes still), but "The Mind Robber" is just coming out, and that's a very good Second Doctor story.

Doctor Who: The Movie (1996) is not available in the U.S., which is a shame only because it's a bridge between the Classic Series and the New Series. Valium is so right about "The Daleks" [the First Doctor Story, not to be confused with the Ninth Doctor story "Dalek"], and the same is true for the equally boring 1964 Peter Cushing film adaptation.

Anyway it's important to remember that Classic Doctor Who is usually 4 to 6 25-minute episodes, 90 to 135 minutes. They take the time to develop things without rushing, even if the story is directed at a good brisk pace. Sit down with the patience of starting a movie, not a TV show.

The New Series is coming out on DVD in a few months, but is also easily downloadable if you have something like BitTorrent, not that I recommend filesharing the intellectual property of the BBC of course.

But do go and look at one of the DVDs I mentioned, and tell me what you think.

The missing words in "Dalek" have been restored. It was a glitch in my formatting program.

Aaron Aardvark - I've gotta ask, intentional Dredd reference, or is it just a coincidence?

It's all good though (apart from "Terry nation-state" - bad SCMoll, bad!). :D

I spent ages trying to make that one work right. I never was quite happy with it, but that was the best I could do.

Actually it's ten times more obscure than that. It's from a Mad Magazine parody of the old Raymond Burr "Perry Mason" series, called "The Night that Perry Masonmint Lost a Case." During the trial the prosecutor reveals that because Perry's defendant committed the murder at a baseball game there are 50,000 witnesses. The bailiff then calls them all to the stand, one by one, in alphabetical order: "Aardvark, Aaron... Aardvark, Abner..."

However, "Aardvark, Azaz the Unabridged" is of course a reference to "The Phantom Tollbooth."

PointyHairedJedi 06-16-2005 07:01 PM

^ You know, I really should have gotten that, but it's been far too long since I've read it. So many books, so little time, you know?

Tegan: That green-blooded son of a blatch. It's his revenge for all those arguments he lost. We're going to fall into the Big Bang!
Nyssa: Ooh, I want one of those.

The Master: HA HA HA!

Nyssa: Well, that was random.
Tegan: We need to get the Doctor back in the episode! Only he can save us!
The Doctor: Sorry, I've having too much fun on my new wheelchair. WHEEEE!
 And nice tie-in with Star Wars ;)

Quote:

Doctor: I suppose it's time for me to wander off so you can be endangered, or we'll never get this plot off the ground.
Ace: Why can't I wander off some time and put you in danger?
Doctor: Next episode, I promise. Here, kitty kitty kitty...
Ace: No wonder the Time Lords booted him out.
:D

Quote:

Doctor: I'd better catch that darn cat. I'm sure she knows what's going on.
Black cat: I'm a housecat. I'm not telling you anything and you can't make me.
Doctor: No, but my friend here can.
Aibo: ROWF! ROWF!
Black cat: AAIEEEE!
Doctor and black cat: POOF
Aibo: Rowf?

Master: The Cheetah People can travel instantaneously back to their home planets.
Doctor: Of course they can.

Quote:

Ace: Sure. After 27 years of facing cunning villains and epic dangers, the Doctor gets taken out by a cheetah on a motorcycle named Midge.
Doctor's hat: Makes as much sense as the rest of this mess.
:D

Quote:

Host: Ladies, gentlemen, and undead corpses, Mr. Charles Dickens will now read from his Christmas masterpiece.
Dickens: (ahem) "Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot --"
(Mrs. Pearce, in the audience, disgorges a blue phantasm that begins shrieking around the auditorium)
Dickens: Well, that's a new one. Usually they just pelt me with roast beast.

Guard: Stop that Dalek!
Dalek: exterminate all humans
Guard: GAK!
Dalek: behold my new ability 2 spin

Just thought I'd mention that 5MDW is getting some trickles of feedback on the web, and the story especially singled out for props is SCMoll's "Dalek," and rightly so. Fantastic!
