Someone made little sculptures of all of those bizarre snowmen Calvin and Hobbes used to make. Real nostalgia.

Why Did You Buy Me That? is a blog where people send pictures of the bizarre and tasteless gifts that they've gotten.

An interesting idea to make going to movie theaters more profitable for the theater, the studio, AND the moviegoer.

Basically, you choose two theaters (he presents the scenario of a mainstream theater and an indie theater) and pay a monthly fee to be able to go to the movies whenever you want. You still have to ask for a ticket, which are first-come-first-serve, but you don't have to pay for it. And if you don't go to the movies the theater still makes money. Depending on which movie you go to a portion of your fee will go to the studio that made that movie.

Furthermore, this membership will allow more targeted advertising opportunities.

PNQ: Opinions?

I just don't expect the monthly fee would be low enough to be worthwhile for most people. I'm no expert on economics, but Netflix and individual movie theaters seem like two different business models. $8 for all the $15 movie tickets you want seems like a horrible deal for the theater. A bookstore model might be more feasible: You pay to have membership at the theater, and then either get bonuses for spending lots of money at the theater or get reduced ticket prices. (It wouldn't surprise me if there were already theaters doing this.)

Star Wars Uncut

Quote:

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake “Star Wars: A New Hope” into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.
It's amusing to see the different approaches taken. Stop-motion, Legos, drawings, 3D models, live-action with grown-ups or children (pets were promised but I didn't see any in the first few minutes), all performed with varying degrees of believability and accuracy. The 15-second format seems ridiculous, but it works out pretty well. If you don't like one approach, you can just wait a few seconds and it will be gone. If you do find a certain approach appealing, you can stop to imagine the rest of the movie in that style as best you can, without being spoiled by the tedium of two hours of imperfect execution. (I liked the scribbly effect of the scene where the escape pod blasts free, but it probably wouldn't work well for the whole movie.)

I watched a few portions of that. Cute stuff, and I agree on the fifteen second limit. Should've been one camera cut each, regardless of length.

The Acts of Gord are the memoirs of a snarky used gamestore owner who refuses to be ripped off or manipulated by the idiotic or criminal gamers out there. Funny stuff.

Confused Matthew responds.

I gotta say, I agree with Matthew on this one. To me turning the TMNT into aliens is akin to blowing up Vulcan. And we all know how I feel about that fiasco.

William Shatner and Adam West sharing the screen. That's right, the two titans of Sixties pop culture hammy acting were in the same movie once upon a time.

I've just discovered the joy of the "literal music video", so here's one of "The Rainbow Connection." For those of you who don't know (like me an hour ago), a literal music video is what happens when someone takes a real music video and rewrites the lyrics to reflect what's actually happening on screen. It often turns out hilariously.

There are tons more, some of which you can find on the TV Tropes page:

A one-man show that presents all of Harry Potter in five minutes. I suppose I'll have to coin a term for a live-action fiver now. "Liver" is taken, so I hereby dub this an actver.

Someone has made a machine out of LEGO Technic that can automatically place dominoes in a row so you can knock them down later.

You guys probably don't know that I am both a fan of LEGO and domino toppling.

An AMV. How I found it would take awhile, but you must watch it. It has a cameo of the Enterprise (and the Power Rangers, and Godzilla, and Superman...), but that's not the main feature. An anime girl fights Darth Vader in a lightsabre duel. Wearing a Playboy Bunny costume.

Look, it's Japan. Japan's weird. Just go. Watch. It's worth five minutes of your time, I promise.

Someone's making a Zelda movie, and it's a Western based on Ocarina of Time. This is the trailer; the movie itself is coming soon.

Yes. You heard me. Zelda as a Western.

So in Ocarina of Time Nabooru is trapped within the armor of an Iron Knuckle for seven years. The programmers of the game cut corners by putting the model of Nabooru inside ALL Iron Knuckles. Kinda creepy when you think about it.

PNQ: Is it just me, or does the melody sound like an eighties sitcom theme?

NAHTMMM 10-09-2012 11:02 PM

Definitely an '80s vibe there.
