November 6 (5MVG: Five-Minute Castlevania)

I'm back again. See, this time --

Crowd: Get on with it!

Right. Here's an update I was planning for Hallowe'en. (I know that's a week ago now, but Hallowe'en isn't over till the Simpsons say it is.) You guys know I'm a huge Mega Man fan; you may also know I'm into Zelda and Metroid. But I have another favourite game series that hasn't even been touched on this site until now. Here's my fiver of one of the greatest NES games of all: Castlevania!

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 04:53 AM

Okay, never played that game, but the fiver's good. It reminded me of Van Helsing, for some reason.

e of pi 11-07-2006 04:56 AM

Funny, though as with most Video Game Fivers, I've never played the source material. More! More! More!

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 05:40 AM

On a tangent, if you've enjoyed the StarTropic fiver, play the game. One of the greatest NES RPGs in my opinion.

mudshark 11-07-2006 05:43 AM

I haven't played it, either. Still funny.

Simon: Ah. Well, time to break out the enchanted Vampire Killer whip.
Zombie 1: A whip? You're fighting evil with a whip? Did all the weapon shops burn down?
Zombie 2: Yeah, man, you should grab something else from the candlesticks!
Simon: There's stuff in the candlesticks?
Zombie 1: (whacks Zombie 2)
----------
Skele-Dragon 2: Yeah! Not even the meat hidden in the walls will give you enough health to get past us!
Simon: There's meat in the walls?
Skele-Dragon 1: (headbutts Skele-Dragon 2)
Simon: Why the hell is there meat in the walls?
*snerfle*

Death: MWAHAHAHA!
Simon: Dracula has got Death itself working for him? Man, he doesn't mess around.
Death: You'll find that the rumours about me haven't been exaggerated either. I do indeed have a scythe, with which I shall administer a thousand cuts!
Simon: Not before my axes warm you over.
Death: You dare defy m-- Ow! Right in the jaws!
Simon: Not bad. I wonder if this would work on taxes too.
Heh, worked that one nearly to d--... yeah... :D

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 06:49 AM

There's meat in the walls the same way that there's money inside of grass: the Minish put them there. :)

You bet! There are lots of Castlevania games I'd like to cover, and unlike with the Mega Man series, I don't feel any particular obligation to go in order. However, like the MM fivers, these will be strictly a diversion -- I have more important stuff for the site that comes first.

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 07:26 AM

Too bad we don't have anyone to five Twilight Princess within a week of release. Won't be me, I don't have the money for a Gamecube, much less a Revolution.

MaverickZer0 11-07-2006 07:36 AM

Come on, a whip is a totally awesome weapon.

...Then again, my perception of that might have been somewhat tainted by Castlevania in the first place. Hm.

Well, it beats a yo-yo. Nice fiver. Warn me before you're going to pick up any more of my favorite video game series, though, I was staring at the update page for about five minutes with my mouth open.

Simon: The moral of this story is I need a better subweapon. Can I have one of your axes?
Axe Armour: At your clearance level? Ha! Nobody gets my stuff without an all-axes pass.
Groan.

And now you can play the game again on hard mode! There'll be more enemies and you can pretend you're getting the Triforce of Courage and everything!
Yay Triforce!

Great fiver, Zeke. You almost persuade me to (find and) play the game.

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 03:01 PM

If you hate Trek puns, don't read the Groaners page at Nitpicker Central. Too late? Oh well...

That is sad, isn't it? Link never actually gets the Triforce, right? It'd be nice if there was a game where he could actually get it.

ijdgaf 11-07-2006 07:06 PM

He totally gets part of the trifoce. But why would he get all of it? Only Ganon(dorf) is that greedy.

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 07:26 PM

That's the point. Link wants to use the Triforce for the right reasons, but not to abuse it, therefore it'd be safe with him.

Okay, Ganondorf (Dragmire) is the human form, Ganon is the pig monster form. Ocarina of Time established that, and OOT is officially the first game in the series chronologically. For most purposes, I use Ganondorf.

ijdgaf 11-07-2006 10:03 PM

The name Ganondorf has only appeared in three of the games. Physically speaking, he's only appeared in two. Ganon is the norm, Ganondorf was just a prototype.

But ANYWAY. I should have Twilight Princess for Wii on the 19th if all goes well. But from all reports, it's certainly not a ten day game. This sucker is a behemoth. A proper fiver would take a while. And a fair amount of room.

But ANYWAY ANYWAY excellent Castlevania fiver. I should be introducing myself to the series with the next DS installment, if all goes well.

Nate the Great 11-07-2006 10:31 PM

Who says it has to be a proper fiver? :)

Just kidding. ;)

Okay, the question becomes whether we ever see human form Ganondorf in anything other than OOT. If not, then I'd almost want to see Ganon sealed into the Evil Realm. You know, an implication that Link killed him outright in the top of Ganon's Keep, and that he sold his human soul to have one last shot at victory, maybe sacrifced it to form a permanent connection with the Triforce of Power so that as long as the Triforce exists he will, in Ganon form. Then it should be the pig monster floating away into the distance and the King of the Gerudo is still a corpse in the rubble of his castle.

What was a ten day game? OOT? I still fondly recall the days of "you need forty hours to do this thing." These days, if you stay within the proper boundaries of the game it should take four and a half, at least we got people going for that record. If you break the rules and utilize glitches all over the place we got people shooting for WAY less than five. There are people skipping entire Temples, for Zarquon's sake! Only doing half of Forest (need the Bow), Shadow (use Farore's Wind to skip half of that, too), and Spirit. I never quite try to speedrun and I can probably do six hours in my sleep and beat it the "real" way.

PointyHairedJedi 11-09-2006 03:33 PM

That was reasonably amusing, considering I've only heard of Castlevania in the very vaguest sense before now.
