Lazy Game Reviews had their ninth anniversary last Saturday.
(It's been over two years since I shilled him) Time for a roundup of some of my favorite LGR videos! He reviews games, he reviews old computer hardware, he goes to thrift stores and shows us the treasures that he's found, it goes on from there. Using a 1/2 inch CRT monitor (originally used for an old video camera) as a PC monitor! The MousePen (that is, a mouseball crammed into what looks like an old dental tool. Why? Because they can!) A wrist rest that looks like a loaf of French bread (your guess is as good as mine...) I'll just link to the entire LGR Thrifts playlist here. What will he find in thrift stores that's weird and wonderful? |
Today's new Trek YouTube channel is EC Henry
Do the size and number of warp coils have anything to do with a ship's maximum speed? "The Inner Light" is actually horrifying (and so is "Hard Time") The beauty of the NCC-1701's design, including it's Golden Ratio compliance Janeway's coffee addiction (75% of the times on Voyager that someone asks for coffee, it's Janeway) How often does Kirk rip his shirt, anyway? Did you know that Picard didn't order any Earl Grey in Season One? (and that he really doesn't drink it that much?) Star Trek mentioned Christmas more often than I bet you thought (which makes me wonder why the "All I Want For Christmas is You" fan video used the same Archer quote for "Christmas" so much) What is the real mortality rate of redshirts? |
Someone made a better mousetrap out of junk. Too bad someone threw it away because it looked like junk.

You'll remember when Lazy Game Reviews plugged a keyboard into a cellphone...
Well, now he plugged a USB hub into a cellphone so he can use the keyboard to play an old DOS game from a floppy disk, using DOSBox within Android! Because the virtual controls of a touchscreen stink when trying to play a game that's meant to use a keyboard. |
Adam Savage meets a bunch of Totoro cosplayers at Comic-Con.
It's interesting how many ways there are to make a Totoro costume... And apparently the collective noun for Totoros is "cuddle." ;) Wait for the Totoro/Chewbacca hybrid... |

Before electronic calculators were commonplace, if you needed a handheld calculation machine for multiplication, etc. you used a Curta.
See Numberphile cover one of the originals. And last year Adam Savage bought a 3D printed replica, but at 3X size. |
The Zelda speedrunners are still chainsawing OOT apart, trying to find every possible way to hack the game and save a couple seconds here and there.
ZFG (formerly known as Zelda Freak Glitcha, ah the early days of speedrunning) recaps some of the recent discoveries here. Now 100% is possible in under four hours. I remember when just plain finishing the game in under five hours was considered a big deal. |

The scale of the solar system if the moon was only one pixel.
Sit back, relax, keep scrolling, and enjoy the commentary. |

All Too Flat recently updated for the first time in nine years!
If you count last May as "recently", that is. All they did was update their privacy policy for GDPR (which is a new General Data Protection Regulation for the European Union), but it's something. At least the creators still visit the site from time to time. The last time I shilled ATF was a year and a half ago. |
Today is National Slinky Day, apparently...
First a recap of some of my previous Slinky links (Slinks?): Slinky vs. treadmill Matthias Wandel's continuous Slinky staircase Now some new links: Giant Slinky vs. escalator Classic '80s commercial Human-sized Slinky performs a half-time show Make an origami Slinky! Crushing a Slinky in a hydraulic press |
Rob Cockerham over at Cockeyed (How Much is Inside) strikes again!
Making giant d20s out of cement! It's more complicated than you'd think. |
Today is the tenth anniversary of Woodworking for Mere Mortals!
(Has it really been five years since I shilled him?) And I guess I never did a favorite video roundup... Floating shelf "Book" gift box Snowflakes Knitting box (including simple finger joint jig) Paper towel holder (with space for foil, plastic wrap, etc) "Coffin" candy dish made out of pallet wood Piggy bank Flower pots |
The Nostalgia Nerd talks about the history of what we now call "legacy ports" before the invention of USB.
Ah, computing in the '90s. There are things that I miss about those days and things I definitely don't. |
What does it take to catch every Pokemon in Gen III?
Without cheating, that is. Between all of the games you need five complete runthroughs plus three more partial playthroughs plus accessing a GameCube bonus disc. Yikes. |
Your daily dose of weirdness...
A fish store stuck googly eyes on their old fish to make them look a bit fresher... |
You'll remember the time that Lex Luthor stole 40 cakes...
Well, a cosplayer actually built his own 40-cake cart to go with his Lex Luthor costume! |
For today's entry in the category "weirdest juxtaposition of pop culture characters in the same advertisement"...
Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, and Mr. Magoo! It makes Batman meeting Pokemon look positively mundane. |
