And now, at last, we're back! Not all the work of the server move is [i:post_uid0]completely[/i:post_uid0] finished (the forum colours still need a bit of tweaking, for example), but it's time to get back to updating -- and we're making our re-entrance with a bang. Here, much delayed, is the second-anniversary celebration of Five-Minute Star Trek.

Two years, two months, and two days ago, 5MST was launched under the care of IJD GAF. It's become one of our most popular and prolific subsites -- and that's never been more obvious than today, when the Animated Series becomes the first Trek show to be [i:post_uid0]completely[/i:post_uid0] covered at 5MV. There were four episodes left, and we've divvied them up as follows:
<ul>[*]IJD himself did "The Pirates of Orion";[*]Kira handled "The Terratin Incident";[*]Kristina Runyeon-Odeberg tackled "Albatross" (some time ago, in fact -- we held it back for this event);[*]and I did "Bem." This one's got a twist -- I won't spoil it for you, but I suggest you read it in IE or Netscape, because Opera doesn't seem to get it quite right.
That last fiver is part of my anniversary present for 5MST, but not all of it. I've also made new subsite graphics which differentiate between the original, animated, and movie series, and I've converted the files to a new PHP-based system. That last part won't make much difference to you readers, but it makes a [i:post_uid0]big[/i:post_uid0] difference behind the scenes. (Unfortunately, I haven't got the episode blurbs copied yet, so they're blank right now. I'll get them filled in tomorrow if I have time. That may not be the only thing that pops up tomorrow, by the way.)
Some acknowledgements for the server move and the TAS event:
<ul>[*]First off, anyone who's been following 5MV for long will have heard me mention Owen, the administrator of 3Sygma and a very good friend of mine. For three years now, 3Sygma has been the perfect host for 5MV; Owen freed us from Angelfire ads and helped with countless tech matters over the years. But it's finally come to the point where running 3Sygma is no longer a reasonable possibility for him. We at 5MV are deeply grateful to Owen for all the work he's done (including during the server move itself -- he completely knocked himself out setting up the forums and such). Ave atque vale, 3Sygma: we salute you.[*]All that said, I couldn't be happier about where we're going. I'm extremely grateful to Christian, overlord of TrekToday, for agreeing to host 5MV. The Trek Nation will be a great home for us; it's powerful enough to handle our bandwidth easily, and very crash-resistent. My [i:post_uid0]Enterprise[/i:post_uid0] fivers are already published there, and ties between the two sites will be getting closer in other ways. Many thanks also to Charles at TT for helping with the server move.[*]For today's event, I owe a huge thank you to Brinshannara, who made the animations for me on very short notice. (After all, shouldn't an animated series have at least one animated fiver?) She did an amazing job; mad props to her. Thanks also to Merlin Missy of 5MF fame for getting us in touch.[*]And finally (gasp, pant)... thank you to IJD GAF for running one hell of a subsite for 2-and-a-bit years and counting.
Welcome back, folks! Try the veal! We'll be here all week.[/color:post_uid0]

Good ones, all, and welcome back, everybody! :D

Happy 2-2-2, 5MST! Thanks to all and sundry, and liked the animations.

([b:post_uid0]Z.[/b:post_uid0], you might want to take a look at the disclaimers on this batch.)[/color:post_uid0]

WHOO HOO!! We're BACK! :D :D :D[/color:post_uid0]

Gatac 04-25-2004 07:56 AM

Hilariousness ensues. (Is that even a word?)

In any event, well done, for such a bloody medium.

Hey! Good to be back!

You're right. The forum colors could use some tweaking. Posting like this is weird. :) And I think the smilies should be smaller, so that they fit within one line of text. But it all looks good otherwise.

Very nice idea, those animations in Bem. But may I suggest that you replace the entire tag-thing, including the < a > tags with the following:

[code:1:post_uid0]<img name="bem1" src="bemimg/bem-start1.gif" onclick="bem1.src='bemimg/bem-anim1.gif';" style="cursor: pointer;">[/code:1:post_uid0]

It's a lot less buggy, it uses one less image and it works in every browser that has javascript. :) Because it's javascript, you don't need the < a > tags. Because your animated gif only cycles once, you don't need an 'end' image. And I thought it would make a lot more sense if you had to click on them, instead of hover over them.

Take a look.[/color:post_uid0]

Errm, yeah, what he said.

Anyway, Happy Birthday, 5MST! Those fivers were very funny ("That time of the decade" tickled my fancy particularly), and of course the fact that the forums are back up deserves a big WHOOPEE YEEBA YEEBA![/color:post_uid0]

Derek 04-25-2004 12:46 PM

Oh weird. There's a reply space at the bottom of each topic now.

Anyway, great fivers all. Congrats on 2-2-2, IJD. You definitely aren't Amish like this guy :blues:

[quote:post_uid0]Captain's Log: Everything's back to normal. The Orion suicide mission was prevented. And as expected, we will be pressing charges.[/quote:post_uid0]
That was a really funny conclusion to the whole pressing charges joke.

[quote:post_uid0]Supreme Prefect: Thankee, Doctor.
Kirk: How many Scotty soundalikes are there on this show?[/quote:post_uid0]
Good question. Practically all the males were voiced by Scotty and all the females by Chapel.

And Zeke, I love the animated text.

[quote:post_uid0]Spock: But I thought I was the science officer.
Kirk: I've always thought of that as more of an honorary title.[/quote:post_uid0]
Heh.

Congrats again on finishing off the animated series.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 04-25-2004 12:56 PM

Quick reply! Woo!

Sorry.[/color:post_uid0]

Hail, Owen! We who are about to code salute you! :)

[quote:post_uid0="Zeke"]...I suggest you read it in IE or Netscape, because Opera doesn't seem to get it quite right....[/quote:post_uid0]
Yeah, Opera's weird about animated gifs. Case in point.

Ah well. At least it wasn't Flash. ;)[/color:post_uid0]

Was Bem as bad as the fiver makes it look like?

OG.[/color:post_uid0]

[quote:post_uid0]Was Bem as bad as the fiver makes it look like?[/quote:post_uid0]

It was TAS. Of course it wasn't that bad.

It was worse.[/color:post_uid0]

Heeheehee. :D

[quote:post_uid5]Sulu: Nothing abnormal yet, sir. Unless you count the freak sitting next to me.
Arex: Same here, on both counts.
...

Kirk: Well, Scotty's accent is still intact. Sickbay? How are the canaries doing?
McCoy: (over the comm) We don't use canaries anymore, Jim. We're far more sophisticated than that.
Kirk: Well, whatever you're using, is there anything out of the ordinary?
McCoy: The redshirts are still doing fine.
...

Kirk: Begin your scans, Mr. Arex. And this time, no punching Sulu under the console with your third arm.
Arex: Aw.
Sulu: Um, Captain?
Kirk: Ah yes. No kicking him with your third leg, either.
Arex: Aw. Anyways, the planet appears to be --
(FLASH!)
Kirk: What the heck was that?
Spock: Our plot complication, no doubt. It was due to arrive at any moment. As is our engine tr--
Scotty: (over the comm) Sir, I cannae give you warp! The engines have been completely torn apart![/quote:post_uid5]

[quote:post_uid5]I pointed out that we would be able to have fun adventures like swimming in a bowl of Cheerios, but nobody else seemed to share my enthusiasm.

With any luck, I can find some friendly insect to tame and carry me in my search for the source of the pulse.[/quote:post_uid5]
:D

[quote:post_uid5]Spock: He heard the word correctly, Jim. He walked into a beam.
Kirk: Just as long as he doesn't make a habit of it.

...
Sulu: Another good answer would have been "We'll know after it eats you."

...
Alien Intelligence: Well, you're not leaving. I hereby disable your weapons with my creepy voodoo mystical powers.
...

Alien Intelligence: Do not destroy yourself, tripartite creature. We all make mistakes. It is part of the human condition to....
(35 minutes later)
Alien Intelligence: ....and that, in conclusion, is why all good little beagles go to Mexican heaven.
Kirk: Your wisdom has touched our hearts, O great one. Bem, are that one feeling better?
Bem: Indeed. This one has learned a great deal from the alien mind's philosophical views.
Alien Intelligence: They are collectively known as Wayism.
Bem: Perhaps someday this one shall be a Reverend of it.
Kirk: Oh ma Gog!

...
Alien Intelligence: (over the comm) All these worlds are yours except for Delta Theta III. And Vagra II. Seriously, don't go there. I'd avoid Ortega too. And if you go to Z'ha'dum, you'll probably die. Other than that, knock yourselves out. Farewell.[/quote:post_uid5]

Lots of funny stuff! :)[/color:post_uid5]

Four fine fivers, and a great anniversary wrap-up of the TAS section. :)

Pirate: (on screen) Why are you chasing us? We're merely a vessel of commerce.
Kirk: Yeah, and my favorite ride at Disney is "Traders of the Caribbean."

Spock: I find it odd that nothing else is shrinking except our uniforms.
Kirk: Yes, I find it disappointing too.
Spock: Your ability for selective hearing never ceases to amaze me.

Supreme Prefect: Thankee, Doctor.
Kirk: How many Scotty soundalikes are there on this show?
McCoy: Don't get Spock started on counting them.

Kirk: Let's contact the ship and heyyyyy! These aren't our communicators! Or our phasers!
Spock: Indeed. Someone has substituted cunning facsimiles.
Kirk: Please -- these wouldn't fool anyone. Communicators shaped like the Enterprise's delta pins? Phasers the size of your thumbnail?

To quote Captain Picard in "11001001," Well done all![/color:post_uid0]

ijdgaf 04-26-2004 06:23 AM

Thanks for the congrats everyone; I've got a few of my own.

* First, the writers. Not just for today's update, but for all of TAS. From Kira and Zeke who just now got to try their hand, to Marc, Derek, and Kristina. Kristina, in particular, has contributed more than any other guest writer. It's only fitting that she be part of these ending festivities.

* Next, the readers. It's pretty great to be able to expose TAS to plenty of people who have never seen the show before, and it's wonderful to be able to contribute to those who have.

* Yeah, these are pretty TAS-centric -- so thanks for everyone else. Even if you've ignored the animated stuff and concentrated on the classic series, you're still thankworthy. It's been a great 2 years, and here's to many more -- unless we keep going at this rate ;)

* Finally, here's to Zeke. It was Zeke who originally proposed the TAS section. When I asked him to do 5MST, it hadn't even occurred to me to five the animated stuff. Zeke suggested it, and here we are today. The graphics look great, the layout is perfect. Thanks for everything man. You're hillarious, you're (getting ;) ) organized, and above all, you're a good friend.

(ahem)
So back to your regularly scheduled sparse comments from me. You've got at least a coupla months before I get this wordy again ;)[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 04-26-2004 10:39 AM

Quick! Sombody take a photo so we can hang it on the wall![/color:post_uid0]

Quinalla 04-26-2004 02:49 PM

Someday I will have to actually watch TAS, but great fivers even though I haven't seen 'em! The "Traders of the Caribbean" line was great :D

Oh, and the login screen, the text for "do you want to automatically login.." is black as well as the background, hehe. Options when you post has the same issue.[/color:post_uid0]

Gatac 04-26-2004 05:52 PM

A technical nit, if I may: I can't log out, nor mark posts as read. Slightly annoying.

Wade, The Sane Commodore 04-26-2004 07:08 PM

Good job on finishing off a series! Oh, and kudos to whoever put the orginial [i:post_uid0]Enterprise[/i:post_uid0] on the TOS link on the front page.

Scotty: USS [i:post_uid0]Enterprise[/i:post_uid0]. NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C, D, E, or NX-01.[/color:post_uid0]

mudshark 04-27-2004 07:32 AM

I'm still wondering about the [i:post_uid0]Angel[/i:post_uid0] disclaimers on these. Did I miss something?[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 04-27-2004 11:36 AM

Presumably the disclaimers'll be fixed soon, now that the forum's been betterfied.

EDIT: Now that's cool - the "Member Number" thing is finally working![/color:post_uid0]
