Most Desired Useless But Impressive Skill

A simple discussion topic. What Useless but Impressive Skill would you want to possess the most, if you could have it instantly and not have to practice it for hours on end every day. For me it's gotta be Speed Cubing, but what about you guys? Reciting all of Hamlet from memory? Riding a fifty-foot-tall unicycle? Tearing a phone book in half? The sky's the limit!

I already can tear a phone book in half. It's not a strength thing, there's a trick to it.

I would like to be able to walk on air. That'd be neat. But since you said skill and not superpower, being able to make whatever I visualize in my mind print itself out on paper would be pretty...okay, again, sort of a mutant power. Going into a computer network...no wait, I got this. Um. I guess I'd just like to be able to finish everything I start.

Actually, being able to draw whatever I can imagine would be an awesome skill to have for me. But it's not strictly useless, is it?

Some talent in the visual arts would be nice.

Ability to get the top score in all those internet games with scoreboards. I think that qualifies as useless, but I'd love that ability.

Regarding tearing a phone book in half, there is a story behind that one...

Mav, I assume you mean simply tearing one page in half at a time. However, back in high school they made us sit through a presentation by one of those stupid groups of people that interspersed the usual "don't do drugs, stay in school" tripe with demonstrations of feats of strength. I actually still have a page from the phone book that they tore in half. The guy actually tore the whole thing (a Yellow Pages from a moderate metropolitan area) in half. Other stuff was bench-pressing weights with your throat and stuff like that.

You meant the kind of feats of strength that are unattainable without some sort of drug?

Nate the Great 06-04-2007 04:21 AM

I never looked at it that way before, but you present a valid point.

They must have a great time at Festivus, though.

Chancellor Valium 06-04-2007 08:31 AM

^No such thing!

Nate the Great 06-04-2007 03:42 PM

Yeah, so? How much of what we talk about here doesn't actually exist? A lot of imaginary stuff happens on this site, all the time!

Chancellor Valium 06-04-2007 08:50 PM

Yes, but Festivus is an external non-existent thing. And it's annoying.

Well, Val, I guess you aren't part of "the rest of us." Not that I've ever seriously celebrated it, but I have read the Festivus handbook and I do understand the sentiment.

There's a pop song waiting to happen, huh?

Curses! My secret is discovered. Well, secret for a Wiki-thing. That's it all right. Everyone knows the one-page-at-a-time thing.

Nate the Great 06-10-2007 07:49 PM

Well, I didn't know about that, but I doubt that the strongman at my school used an oven.
