It's more the jump to TDKR that is concerning. Dark Knight is like the interesting side quest that happens in between the two main story points.

It was based on the Star Trek Voyager Elite Force maps, and that one was based on the Quake engine. It could handle the curves, but not on smaller objects. Also explains why certain maps were larger.
