Dubs and subs have their own upsides.

Subs are generally more accurate because the subbers try and get as close to the original dialogue as possible.

Dubs are interesting in that they are often funny, and some things are cut for no reason.

Yeah, like they're going to leave this episode in.
(Too bad the screencaps section isn't there, but then again I have the clip...mind you, they left more of the violence in this series, so maybe the towel scene will be left in? Then I'd get to see Chaud laugh...he cries in 28+29...but...)

Sorry, rambling. A bit of bitterness towards dubs from everyone, I think. When all's said and done, I prefer subs.

In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it was cool to have the subs rather than the dub, but you spend the whole time trying to read than watch the movie.

Wow, is this an old topic. The bolts through its' neck are a little strange though.

I've never had that problem. See, my brain works in the most perfect way for subtitles. When I see a subtitle, I do not see each individual letter, nor do I see each individual word. I see a chunk of words, and this chunk of words is quickly processed/read by my brain in a matter of seconds.

It's quite scary, really. I often wonder why I can't read books this fast.

Subtitles are defintely a yes. Dubbing is bad for your teeth.

But... Miyazaki? Is he at it again? *shudder* Sorry. I have to be the only person in the Western Hemisphere who really hated "Spirited Away."

What?! J-Team is closing?!

Dubbing causes cavities. 4 out of 5 dentists say so. The 5th is currently locked away watching Cloverway's Sailor Moon and feeling a little pain on one of his molars...

I never saw Spirited Away. I think Miyazaki's stuff is a little overrated, although I liked Kiki's Delivery Service.

J-Team closed, man. Come to the funeral at my house.

The only person?
No, I'm a total anime nut and I thought it was way too corny. Same goes for Kiki's Delivery Service. I'm not exactly a Miyazaki fan either.

(Also, I was getting my episodes for that anime messed up. It was 24 I wanted to see. Eheheh...Enzan in a towel...)

Ahem.

Actually, I recently saw Howls Moving Castle, and that wasn't too bad. I think I'd rather read the book though - it seemed a little confused in places.

You bet. I wanted to cry when I saw the words, "We can't find www.janeway.org."

You BET I'm gonna be in the 5th row.

Do you mean that you have no idea where I'll be in the 5th row, or for what?

Most fun: subtitles AND dubbing, and enjoy the differences (Crouching Tiger is a good example--the translations seem to have been done by two sets of people in separate, locked rooms).

Anyway hearing the original voices is always better. I am currently addicted to Bleach (a Japanese anime), and there is just no way an English dub could convey the cadences and emotions of the original voice actors. ("Nani??" = "What??" just sounds different.) This way you also get to hear the chucks of imported English ("Thankyou!" pops up a lot, and the closing credit song is all in Japanese except for the words "rhapsody" and "appreciation").

I know what you mean. Absolutely nothing can compare to the look on my face (at least, that's what I heard) when I found out my favorite character in my favorite anime was going to be voiced by the same voice as Sonic the Hedgehog in the new season.

Harpuia says I had this really weird expression on my face, as if I were going to kill something but not be aware of doing it. Then I remembered he's voiced by a girl in the original...but it's barely noticeable, and the previous VA was perfect...gah.

Don't get me started.

As far as Inuyasha's dubbing goes, as far as the translation it's pretty good as far as I can tell from also watching a good fansub. Most of the things that changed are acceptable given the challenges involved. But yes, Miroku's voice actor in particular isn't very good at the acting part. Look on the bright side, though; at least it got imported despite him and without censorship.

Censorship and dumbing down are the real enemies from what I've seen. Not only do censors butcher the themes of a story, the replacement stuff is usually poorly thought-out; I can think of several video games right off the top of my head whose censorship was handled very poorly (no, the women weren't "kidnapped" if they're still right there; no, a mere find-and-replace of "super beings" for "gods" and "wish" for "pray" in a game set in a fantasy world doesn't "protect" children from "pagan religions" and insults the intelligence of everyone 13 and up to boot).

As for dumbing down, that's even worse. I'm sorry, but just because something is going to be shown to children doesn't mean that you have to render everything into black and white so they can understand it. Compensating badly for cultural differences so minor that they shouldn't be touched falls into this category too (no, the girl who looks just like Horohoro is not his wife, she's his sister, and you didn't have to change that because "it wouldn't be seen that way"!).

OK, end rant. I need to take a shower. -- Pteryx
