Xeroc, just be aware that Zeke will find a member title for you that will be more funny than you can possibly imagine
(stares at Xeroc's avatar)

Desperation. Sick, twisted desperation.
Desperate, sick and twisted... nebulas?

Don't you see what he did? He's so desperate to get the member titles back, he built his title into his avatar.
I'm not desperate, I just realize that the chance of getting a real one this century is pretty slim, and it took me like 5 minutes, and best of all, I can change it whenever I want! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Letting an infected nerve sit? As a microbiologist, I gotta say you're asking for trouble, or at least a root canal.

Quiz time! Quiz time! Celeste, if I came into your dental office with a tooth where the filling had come out and the nerve was clearly infected (one could tell by the insane pain level), what would you do?

First step is antibiotics perscribed by the dentist. Then you'd need a root canal and a refill for that filling you lost. If the cavity was too big to re-fill, then a crown would be wise. As for what I personaly could do for you as a dental hygienist, there are quite a number of desensitization agents that I could place on the tooth to help ease the pain while the antibiotics take effect.

Anything else? :)

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who takes eight years of their life in order to learn how to do something and earn a piece of paper that will let them do it obviously takes too much pleasure out of it.

For something like the Dramatic Arts *cough* that's fine, but a dentist? Especially with the sound a drill makes? And how fun it could be to just have that sound constantly looping as you lure your victims into the chair and the light and the drugs?

Why not? Atlantis is pretty good, at least in my opinion.

I've only seen like the first six episodes of SG-1.

Man, what a daunting undertaking. That's the one good thing about all these recent sci-fi shows that have tanked after a few season(s) -- easier to catch up on w/ DVD.

Ah, and yes. Still.

When you've got a lot of important things on your plate, even spending a few hours watching your favorite show ever can be considered "wasting time".

A little too quick on the trigger, Nate.

Chancellor Valium
04-01-2007, 12:44 PM
True.

SG-1 is however, worth time. The precise amount is yet to be calculated. The Omni-Cognate uh...(someone please help out with this Guide reference!) is having some problems with the required arithmetic.

I'll admit, though, that I still need to watch seasons 2-6, and half of season 7. Possibly a few other bits I missed, too.

Nate the Great
04-01-2007, 11:28 PM
Hyperlobic OmniCognate Neutron-Wrangler of Sisoronicus Twelve. Probably butchered the spelling, but that's what it is, and I didn't look it up, I swear. Hey, I do have an h2g2 username, right?

So you use the term "wasting time" as a relative measure. I use it as an absolute measure.

Chancellor Valium

Okay, changed.

I know people who never watched or didn't like SG-1 but watched Atlantis and liked it. I personally couldn't get into SG-1 with Ben Browder AT ALL. I didn't even watch the last half of the season. Atlantis is my new favorite show.

You could make it 'lost civilisation'. It doesn't quite fit with Andromeda's opening credits, but it kinda fits the theme of both shows.

And proclaiming you a god in my siggy? Had nothing to do with Member Titles or anything. It's just a fact.

Nate the Great
04-02-2007, 05:34 AM
My only problem with Ben Browder is that he spent the first episode looking like he was going to either faint or start a hysterical temper tantrum.

Oh, and although I like Sheppard's "O'Neill clone" impersonation, Mitchell doesn't do nearly as good of a job. I wish he'd try harder to put his own spin on the character. Who says that the head of an SG team has to be an O'Neill clone?

Hejira

A few late replies:
It's just a one-level pun on the term "spin doctor." I considered "spin city" too.
My point was that while watching SG1 would be wasting time, whatever else I'd do with that time (like playing videogames) would be no better.
Arzosah, you'll always be an Andromeda fan to me. Seriously, I'll change the title if you want me to, but Atlantis isn't my turf... and I understand that you didn't like seasons 4 and 5 of DROM, but why does that mean you're no longer a fan of the show in general?
I am still gonna do the Pi Day thing. Don't make me slap you.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am still a fan of the first few seasons of DROM. Hell, I liked some of the episodes in the last few seasons! What I didn't like was the way the writers/staff/whatever destroyed a good story.

Irregardless, now my favorite show is SG Atlantis, and it would be, DROM or not.

Like I said earlier (I think I said it earlier - I'm too lazy to check) I honestly don't mind, I'm just glad to have one. And please do leave it as is, I'll just pretend it's talking about Atlantis falling to the bottom of the sea. Its more fun that way anyway!

Good question. I never figured out how to animate stuff like that, exactly, but in theory the simplest way would be to make frames with the head moving through the right positions to seem as though it were, and then string them together in a program to make a .gif.

AKAArzosah
04-19-2007, 11:08 PM
Oh, the simplest way, you say!

Sa'ar Chasm

That depends on whether it's a molecular way or an atomic way.

ijdgaf
04-20-2007, 01:07 AM
When making GIF animations in the past, I generally use Microsoft GIF animator (http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=288).

It's pretty basic, and most of the work I do with it involves copying and pasting in paint.

Basically, you have to create each frame individually and then paste them into the program. So in order to create a bobblehead, you'd have to generate each frame of the unit individually.

Then, with the program you can edit how long each frame stays on the screen. Preview it and tweek it until you've got things the way you want. And then you're done. The only downside is, once you've saved an animated GIF, you can't go back and edit it. You would have to start from scratch.

It's a mild pain in the ass, and the results aren't all *that* impressive. But it's a fun diversion, I guess.

So my new title IS clever, but I'm wondering if it's a little TOO clever. After all, a Dopefish can only think "Swim, swim, hungry," so it wouldn't have the capability to think anythink else. It's not smart enough. Hence, "Dopefish." But I suppose Zeke thinks I'd make a particularly smart Dopefish. Or, considering that my fish can't even keep three things straight in his mind, a particularly stupid Dopefish. I guess it's your call. :) (There's a poll, huh? "Does Zeke think Nate the Great would make a smart or a stupid Dopefish? Yes. No.")

P.S. A LONG time ago I wanted to make an avatar that was a cycling list of instructions:

1. How to be an official Dopefish in Three Easy Steps.
2. Swim (Dopefish swims to the right).
3. Swim (Dopefish swims to the left).
4. Hungry (Dopefish looks to camera and opens mouth).
5. Congratulations! You are now an official Dopefish! (Dopefish burps)

Unfortunately, the images would be cut and pasted from a banner from another site, and my spriting skills aren't sufficient enough to do anything beyond cropping and scaling, so the words would've been REALLY tiny on the avatar. Sad, really.

I say cheat, and fine one that somebody has done already. I'm sure I've seen some free ones available.

I'm with pointy on this one ;)

You could try having the words in separate frames:

1. "How to be an official..."
2. "Swim"
3. (Dopefish swims right)
4. "Swim"
5. (left)
6. "Hungry"
7. (hungry Dopefish)
8. "Congratulations!..."

That would tend to increase the filesize, but assuming the parts showing the Dopefish aren't long animations or anything I think you could get away with it.

I guess, but somehow that seems like less work than simply changing it to one of my other (premade, "stolen") animated avatars. You know, Link's Spin Attack, Zelda stuck in her crystal, the spinning Kataan probe, Kid Radd's The Power of Cheese, the hypercube...

PS. Any preferences on what I should stick with for awhile? I could e-mail the options to anyone that's interested. I'm sure Zeke would like me to stick with one for awhile, too.

Eh, I don't mind rapid avatar-changing as long as the user in question doesn't mind a little lag time in my changing his/her member title.

Just for that, I almost want to change it EVERY DAY just to see if you can come up with an all-purpose title to cover all of them. :)

"Crazy as a bedbug."
"Fickle as a sickle."
"Bizarro."
"Great the Nate."

Oh, you just try it. I'll give you back the Britney title.

Britney title? When and what was that?

You were "not a girl, not yet a woman" for a while, IIRC.

I don't think I noticed that. Maybe I was on vacation that week.

Repression of distressing memories is often a feature of severe emotional trauma, so I'm hardly surprised you don't remember it. ;)

ELIZA2: Do you think psychobabble makes me uncomfortable?

That'd be fun to see, huh? Two ELIZA's duking it out, not knowing that the other is also a computer?

ELIZA: Do you think that I think psychobabble makes you uncomfortable?
ELIZA2: Do you think that I think that you think psychobabble...

Moving back to something resembling the actual thread topic, how come so many people merge their webaliases into one word?

most places won't allow spaces in your user name. Here i'm Katy Jane, but everywhere else i'm KatyJane.

Forcing a merge is silly enough, but I thought that that's what underscores were for. Nate_the_Great.

Yeah, Z, if you change my title back to "To air is human," it'd be nice. In retrospect that title works on many levels at once. Air guitar aside, I do put on airs at times, you could work some sort of snowboarding analogy in there, and so on.
