I was totally gonna IM you and tell you to change every instance of "we" to "wii" on the whole site. Never saw you on though. Perhaps it's for the best.
Anyway, I camped for 15 hours and picked up a wii, a controller, and a nunchuck. We were 2nd and 3rd in line. And because of confusion, we were some of the last to pick up extra controllers. It was fairly hectic. And I have doubts we would've made it if we had shown up early this morning. So many sad kids/parents being turned down because vouchers had already been handed out.
Wii sold out as bad as PS3. Only Nintendo made like three times as many systems.
Eat that, Sony.
(under obligation to open mine next week... too bad)

God I'm just....,...,..,.,., I can not stand the wait. It's out on the 11th of next month over here. I've never been so excited about a console. It looks truely amazing. It's got so many new exciting bits and bobs on it.
I did think about importing it, but I think part of the fun is the going down and getting it from the shop. Waiting in line. Talking to other people about it. Plus the shops are opening at midnight, and it's gonna be all christmasy too. And then I'll hand the money over, and then pick the games and then open the box...And, and, AND !
Breath...Breath...Breath. And relax.
Seriously, I've almost at the point of having to sit down and breath into a bag everytime I see adverts on TV.
I really think this is gonna be huge. I hope it is. Because Nintendo deserve to be on top again, for once. I'm not anti-PS3 or Xbox or anything. But what ever you think about Nintendo, you can't say they don't try new things. And come up with some fantastic ideas. Analog Sticks? (Yeah I know they weren't quite the first) Rumble packs? Four controller ports on a console? Touch screen control? Microphone enhanced games? Free Online Gaming? Old Game download system? Flipping amazing wireless controllering thingy that will change how we play games?
And the line up is just......
Zelda! In a launch line up!
Mario soon....
Smash brothers...
Metroid.... (Can not wait)
Plus...Plus! That free Wii Sports!!!!! Fantastic.
Yeah, so I might get one.
Sorry if that was a bit garbled...I've had a lot of Ribena tonight...
BTW, on gameFAQ.com Samus won this years character battle, but Link took the Battle Royal. Both Nintendo guys! (Or Girls as it maybe)

I wonder how many people were camped out in front of stores for the Revolution launch (I'm doing penance for actually saying Wii in casual conversation, okay?). The day before the PS3 launch I was amazed to see how big the line outside of Target was. People actually camping to get a console! A sign talking about tickets to reserve your console! A warning that it's gonna be one per customer! It's sad how people would actually buy in bulk, mark them up, and sell them to people too lazy to stand in line. Reminds me of the time my sister drove for an HOUR to use a friends' ticket to get a copy of Harry Potter 6 at 12:01. That's just crazy.
Can anyone who actually knows these things tell me if the Xbox 360 is actually technoligically superior, even though it was released a year ago?
ijdgaf
11-20-2006, 05:17 AM
X-Box 360 is graphically pretty much the same as the Playstation 3.
And we were there for 14 hours. Store opened at 10 in the morning, we got there around 7:30-8:00 the night before. There was a girl in front of us who had been camping all day. The line started picking up momentum around midnight. If you weren't at the store at least 4 hours early, you were screwed.

Can anyone explain the allure of buying a system on release day? I've read here and there that a lot of people have figured out that delaying the purchase can be smarter:
1. Give them a few months to lower the price.
2. There are always bugs in the first version of consoles.
3. You can hear game reviews from actual players, not the PR guys who never give negative or realistic reviews.
4. You want more games available. I know I'd want to buy Revolution with Smash Brothers Brawl and Twilight Princess simultaneously, go for the REALLY big splurge and get it over with. (PS. why isn't Brawl ready yet? And Mario Galaxy for that matter)
But what ever you think about Nintendo, you can't say they don't try new things.
Sure you can. Now repeat after me: Nintendo doesn't try new...
Sorry about that. Let's try again: Nintendo doesn't try n...
Okay, once more: Nintendo doesn't try...
Alright, how about this: Nintendo doesn't not try new things. There. I said it. Just don't read that sentence too carefully and we should be fine.
Anyway, while I don't have plans on purchasing a console anytime soon, the Wii is certainly the one I'm most excited about. It certainly seems to be the most innovative new system, and it doesn't hurt to have a library of classic games to download. And the price is a big draw too. I hope it's as good as it seems like it's going to be.

It's out on the 11th of next month over here.
My birthday is good for something after all!
No, I didn't get one. I only got a Gamecube about four months or so ago. I'm betting it'll be a while. Not only do I have to save up, but I have to get over the fact that the controller is a remote.
Which I still haven't since I saw it.
Nate the Great
11-20-2006, 10:21 AM
I'd already decided six months ago that getting a Gamecube would be a waste of money, since a Revolution will do everything that the 'Cube can, except use a Gameboy Player, which I'm very interested in. I wonder if they could sell Gameboy games through Virtual Console. Not Gameboy Advance games, of course, those are still on the market, but there are some nice original Gameboy games that'd be nice to have, and they'd be cheaper than Nintendo games, too.
Oh, and I have right here the free prerelease brochure from Best Buy. Here are some funny and/or intriguing quotes from it:
"The Wii revolution begins! Maybe it's name is funny, but Nintendo could be laughing all the way to the bank with its next-generation console."
See what they did there? "Wii revolution?" I'll have to send Best Buy the bill to fix the stiches in my side from all that laughing. :)
"Nintendo believes game controllers have become too complicated for the average non-gaming citizen. By reducing the number of buttons and enabling intuition to control the game, it hopes to create a less-intimidating pick up and play approchability for Wii games."
Uh, I know they want to attract people outside the teen boy and teen-at-heart young guy markets, and I also realize that the original Nintendo was abosolutely groundbreaking with only five buttons on the controller, but you don't see Playstation and Xbox losing money, do you?
Now, an aside about the Virtual Console. Using the figures in the brochure, the price of an NES game is $5, SNES $8, and N64 $10. I can see the rationale for this, but it just seems to me that just like all games aren't created equal, maybe the prices shouldn't either. Think about it: tweak the graphics on Super Mario 3 and they could probably charge a LOT more than $5. On the same hand, there are a lot of N64 games that people don't think are worth a buck apiece. At the local pawn shop guess what the N64 games were? At least nine out of ten of them were sporting games. I suppose they just won't offer a plethora of sporting games on Virtual Console, but what about stuff like Turok and Sarge's Army Men? There might be people willing to shell out three bucks, but not ten. Nintendo might be gouging themselves here. For that matter, I know there should be a lot of people willing to pay more for legacy games if they're turned into enhanced remakes. For example, it'd be nice to finally get a legal All Bonds option for GoldenEye. I suppose that even though all four actors are alive it's really up to Broccoli Productions, the Fleming estate, and a lot, I mean a LOT of lawyers.
"You literally draw back the remote like you would a bowstring and then release your arrow by pressing the trigger. The sound of the arrow flying from bow to target comes across as an audio effect from a tiny mic housed in the Wii remote."
Um, I think that would be "tiny speaker." Hey, I'm a nitpicker! :)
Oh, and one picture shows the four tiny lights on the Wiimote showing who's Player One, Player Two, etc. Gotta wonder if you can choose which Wiimote's which, or if you gotta play Hot Wiimote to get the right one.

Am I the only one who thinks this console looks absolutely rediculous?
Although, I'm probably just bitter because I will suck at the majority of the games they'll bring out on it...
Nate the Great
11-20-2006, 06:24 PM
I don't think that the console looks ridiculous. It's a white box the size of three DVD cases, what's so weird?
I think all of us stink at the majority of games out there. I mean, some of us kick butt at shooters, some at sporting games, some at RPGs, etc. It all evens out.
It's the sporting games that get to me. Why play basketball on a screen? I prefer games that you couldn't possibly do in real life. At least I don't go running around swinging swords at skeletons and pushing ten ton stone blocks in real life, do any of you?
I can honestly say my heart skips a beat every time I see a picture of the Wii. I love it to bits. The cube is all but a memory to me.
All hail the Wii!

Hooray! I get to open my system up tomorrow!
Picked up Zelda and Monkey Ball today, and a classic controller (amazed I was able to find one).
Why I bought Wii at launch:
1) I don't wait for Zelda.
2) Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are all coming out in the next six months or so. I am going to need a system to play all those gems on. Might as well get it now.
3) The system cost was halved because I'm going 50/50 on it with my fiancee.
4) I can get retro games on virtual console. I love the retro games.
5) 250 is pretty good value for a system and a pack-in anyway.
6) I really, really don't wait for Zelda.
Launch systems may be faulty sometimes, but if it's widespread or severe then Nintendo would give me a new one. And the only problems I'm reading are minor firmware problems are being ironed out with every passing firmware update.
And...you know. Zelda.
Plus. Zelda?
Anyways? Why with the waiting months!? It's like waiting till a movie is out on DVD to see it. Might be cheaper. Might be easier than waiting outside the cinema. But it's just not Cricket, is it?
I swear I'm gonna import one before the week is out.
ijdgaf
11-20-2006, 09:29 PM
Well waiting outside the cinema is slightly different. For one, you generally don't need a tent and 14 hours for that.
I was thinking big opening day type cinema type. You know. Harry potter openings and star wars ones. There where some camping down here I tell you.

Six months. How optimistic. I'd lay you odds that they're gonna wait longer than that, let Twilight Princess empty everyone's pockets and then wait 'til we have disposable income again before they spring the next killer app on us.
I wonder what's keeping Mario Galaxy. Weren't they working on it when Mario 64 was released, or was all of that transformed into Pikmin and Mario Sunshine?
For me, Brawl is gonna be the killer app for Revolution. After all, we can get Twilight Princess for Gamecube, right? I know, I know, hardly the same, but still...
Blasphemy!
I love the cube. (Hey I'm a trek fan; course I do.) But I really can't see any competition. I'll pip for the zelda mark 2.
And I think Mario galaxy is different to what you are thinking of. There was talk about Mario 128 (Or 256 I forget what) They did say it was a new super game. But still a long way off. Then they said it was Galaxy. Then it wasn't. Then it was.

Never thought about the Gamecube in terms of the Borg. I thought that Microsoft was the Borg. "We are Bill Gates. You will be upgraded. Resistance is futile." Etc.
Yeah, I knew about the Wikipedia article. That's my point; even granted that the "Mario 128 demo" was just a tech demo and that most of that tech went into Pikmin, they've been working on Galaxy for four years now.
May I point out that Miyamoto himself used the name Revolution, and this year for that matter? Just wanted to exploit the gap Burt left me.
ijdgaf
11-21-2006, 01:07 AM
They've been working on Twilight Princess for four years as well.
Smash Bros. Brawl just started development a year or two ago.
Metroid Prime 3 has been in production since Prime 2 came out (two years).
Nintendo quality takes time. Be patient.
And Super Mario Galaxy borrowed about as much from Mario 128 as Super Mario Sunshine did. Both are entirely separate games.
Also: Twilight Princess for Cube is an inferior products. Sorry, but I don't really want to play an inferior version of Zelda. If you do, please -- have at it.

11-21-2006, 02:27 AM
I'm not sure if the phrase "Nintendo quality" is irony, joke fodder or what, so I think I'll just stay away from the lightning sand. Further Wiibashing are the ROUSs, in case you were wondering.
I was just saying that my definition of "killer app" is that you MUST have one to get another to work. Mario 3 is the killer app for NES, Tetris is the killer app for Gameboy, OOT is the killer app for N64, etc. Twilight Princess is up there, but I was just saying that Brawl requires Revolution, so it's ever-so-slightly higher.
ijdgaf
11-21-2006, 02:38 AM
I don't know what you're on about. Nintendo consistantly makes highly rated first party games. Nintendo is known for making quality first-party titles. People (rightly) complain about lack of third-party support. But I have yet to see a decline in review scores on Nintendo's part. And I'm sure you can appreciate that as well, Mr. Ocarina-fivist.
Zelda may be available on two consoles. But the versions are hardly equal. And, as I said, I am not one to buy an inferior version of my favorite game series ever.
And judging by review scores, Twilight Princess easily falls into the killer app classification.

11-21-2006, 03:14 AM
I am a Nintendo fan, have been since the days of Mario 3 and Star Tropic. In fact, I decided a long time ago that I'll only have Nintendo consoles, no matter how flashy Playstation and Xbox may be.
I also love Zelda. I fived OOT because I love it.
I was insinuating that "Nintendo quality" might be a joke because ... I knew I had a reason ...
Well, for one thing, I recently read about the batteries on older Gameboy games going dead after awhile and having to pry the cart open to replace it, something that was clearly never intended to happen. You'd think that even then there was such a thing as solid state data storage akin to jump drives.
Oh, and I was wandering around some N64 games lately and I guess I was getting ticked at all of the shortcuts I was seeing. You know, sheets of 2D grass sticking up like fans someone stuck in the ground. In Mario Party fists that are clearly cubes. Reading about all that extra stuff in Goldeneye that was never finished, so they set up cheap blocks and removed the direct trigggers for them, but left the data itself so that hackers could mess around with it. Heaven forbid they clean up the code.
ijdgaf
11-21-2006, 03:26 AM
And here, I own a PSP. You, my friend, are the fanboy here.
Nintendo can hardly be faulted for sticking watch batteries in their cartridges to save data. Cartridges are expensive enough as it is (which is why Sony and Sega switched to CD-ROMs in the fifth gen, and everyone moved to DVDs in the sixth gen). Solid state data storage was around then, but it has only become relatively cheap in the past few years -- and as such, the DS has the first cartridges which save data that way. Those batteries allowed you to get your games at reasonable prices. Not something worth complaining about. And I picked up a bit to open the cartridges for about 5 bucks. Makes things pretty easy, though you do lose your old data.
As for shortcuts, I dare you to find other publishers who don't do the same thing. Nintendo is way better than most (and GoldenEye isn't Nintendo anyway).
But let's talk about Nintendo quality another way. You can drop a gamecube off your roof and it'll probably still work. You can leave a game boy advance in your yard for a few days, run it over a lawn mower, and it will still work. Meanwhile, X-Box 360s overheat and Sony's power cables explode.
Yeah... I'm really not seeing any problems with the term "Nintendo quality".
Well Goldeneye was Rare. And in all fairness, I think Nintendo's record are better than most other companies. Even Sega. Yes, they aren't perfect, but who is these days, eh?
And when you play Mario 64, The Wind Walker, Advance Wars, Mario Kart, you realize that this is as close to perfection you're ever lightly to get in the computer game world.
Short of the borg assimilating Mario.
(What is it with me and the borg today?)

Almost makes me wonder if the old days of save states was better. I distinctly remember games like Startropic, where your info was not so much directly saved, but you were given a code to recreate your stats.
Never heard of Advance Wars.
How long have rechargable batteries been around? Was it a possibility to have those in game carts? I suppose they never thought that Gameboy would still be in existence twenty years down the line.
MaverickZer0
11-22-2006, 08:41 AM
Well, before I got an adaptor I used to use rechargeables in my GBC, so I guess that's a yes. :p
Nintendo quality is good. What's wrong with it? It's 'Nintendo hard' that I quibble about, since it has a range of 'so incredibly easy your grandma could do it' and 'OH GOD PLEASE LET ME KILL MYSELF' and nothing in between.

Oh yeah. I gotta wonder how far I'd have gotten on Majora's Mask if I already hadn't had the strategy guide. I tell ya, being locked inside a plant's body, locked inside a town, with the moon about to crush everything, is pretty depressing if you can't get out.
I suppose that's one thing that creates a paradox. Like I've said, I'm a big Startropic fan, and I enjoy God of Thunder, a VERY old DOS game. Kudos for those who've heard of it. Both of those games are big into the "talk to EVERYONE, every single time you get stuck, and they'll probably say something different" thing. Majora's Mask is kinda like that, only it's extended. It's "talk to everyone, every six hour period, carrying every known mask and powerup, and they'll probably say something different."
God of Thunder! No way! Nate, you just won ten points.
I'm really annoyed about this Wii situation. I have the money for one now, but not only are the stores sold out (which I expected), they don't even know when they'll have more. Now, when I chose not to do anything desperate to get a Wii, I knew the consequence would be having to wait... but I thought I would at least know how long that wait would be.
It's a sad time indeed. Right now millions of people all over the world are starving for a Wii.... And monsters like this: http://www.smashmywii.com/ waste them...

On the one hand, Nintendo has stated repeatedly that they would have 4 million Wiis out before the end of the year. Their publicity machine has made an effort to emphasize how many they'll have available in comparison to the competition.
On the other hand, launch shortage seems to be the in thing now. Selling out of all your stock is a sign of success, regardless of how big the original stock actually is. It's pretty certain that Nintendo got more units out there than Sony, or Microsoft at this time last year. But Neither Nintendo or Sony has released hard numbers, so it's hard to say for sure exactly how many anybody has shipped of anything. There's always this (http://nexgenwars.com/) to look at though... not sure how accurate it is. But it's interesting. Unfortunately, it seems Nintendo has joined in the same game as all the rest. They may have made more, but they certainly didn't make enough.
Anyway, I would imagine a bit of effort would yield a Wii by Christmas. I have heard that shipments should be arriving fairly frequently. It's sure to be a hot Christmas item, but hopefully supply will catch up to demand... soon?

Oh yeah, God of Thunder. The whole thing's been released as freeware, by the way. I can e-mail the walkthroughs I've found, too. Everyone should try it, seriously.
So, are these Whose Line points, or do I get to cash them in to get a mention in a TJI? That'd be neat.
For some reason, the phrase "smash my Wii" seems to evoke all sorts of fodder for crude jokes. They could've tweaked it a little from "smash my Revolution" to "Wii are the smashers" or something.

I'd just like to voice my approval of smashmywii and their affiliates. I wish I could've done that, smash a game system right in front of the people who've been waiting in line for hours, if not days. You also have to give them credit for maintaining that original NESs should never be smashed in that fashion.
Well, I think that three weeks between batches isn't too bad. Gotta wonder if they've found any bugs that had to be fixed first.

Doing a little research for my sister, I've reached the following conclusion as to the best way to obtain a Wii at this point in time.
I don't know how these cycles work in other countries, but here major stores put out ads in paperson Sundays and put out new stock the same day. I have read reports that stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart have been hoarding their stock of Wiis until they reach a certian number, and then advertising them on Sunday.
So check the ads before stores open, then head to the store if they're pimping the Wii. Odds are, you'll be successful.

(ahem) While it's still up, I invite all of you to witness how Microsoft pwn3d (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/index.html) Gamespot's PS3 page.
Sony, I hope your eyes are as wide as your gargantuan, monstrosity of a console.
And Microsoft -- I never thought I'd say this, but you're okay in my book.
Edit: and... it was taken down. Shucks. The Penny Arcade forums have pictures here (http://www.penny-arcade.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1073840737&start=0) (first post).
Whoa! That's impressive even for Microsoft -- especially since the browser in that screenshot is Firefox. (It would have been easy enough for them to sneak something into IE.)
I don't know how it's selling, but the PS3 is definitely losing the battle of acclaim. Everyone seems to be dumping on it. VG Cats, for example, is normally an equal-opportunity mocker, but they did a particularly biting PS3 comic (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=212). And YAD really ripped Sony a new one (http://www.youaredumb.net/archive/2006/11/17) on release day; I found it Bryan's best article in ages, though I'm biased.

I'm seriously wondering what these guys are paying their PR departments for. After at least four prior generations, plus the relatively current sales figures of the X-Box 360, both Nintendo and Sony would have a stinkin' idea of how many consoles to make.
In one of the articles it said that PS3's take longer because you can't just crank out Blue-Ray drives. Uh, simple answer there, folks. Build PS3s without them, but make them upgradable later. I have no idea how many Blue-Ray movies there are out there, but it's not that many yet. Even if you can't upgrade them, there are people who don't care about Blue-Ray yet. I know I don't. I'm still waiting for holocubes like in the h2g2 movie. It has to be possible.
I'm here to sing a song on the wonders of the wii. (Also because I'm bored at work too)
Mario Party 8 is totally fantastic! Really good use of the wiimote.... could be better/faster, but a great game. Resident Evil 4 Wii is amazing too. And I keep going back to Wii Sports...
Everyone I've shown the Wii too want's to get one... From 10 year olds, to middle aged women.
I love that console.
In the words of Dukat: Everyday bring new reports of victorys for (The Wii)...it's only a matter of time before the (PS3/360) collapse and join (Nintendo).
Or something like that.
This week is the first time I've been able to really try the Wii. I was at a family reunion this week and one of my cousins brought his system. I really enjoyed playing it, even though it didn't quite live up to my expectations from reading about it (few things do). The remote is a fun way to control games, but using it as a pointer takes some getting used to.
Of course, the only game I played on it was Wii Sports, so I didn't exactly get to see everything the system could do. On top of that, my (younger) siblings seemed to spend all their free time playing it; beating each other up in Wii Sports boxing or making Miis (Miii?) of Naruto or Megaman characters. And that's when they weren't playing our DS or my brother's Gameboy Color or the Gameboy Advance I just bought. So...I guess the moral is: my family likes Nintendo.

Nothing's wrong, it's just that with no system more advanced than N64 in my possession, my opinions about modern gaming systems is more based on superficial examination than concrete experience.
I was reading a forum - somewhere - the other day. And, funny enough, the major opinions there seemed to be against the Wii. Was quite heated too. I can't just understand it, though. Many of the 360's owners seemed to be happy with their system, while still complementary of the Wii, but many of the PS3 people were almost fanatical about how crap the Wii is and how great the PS3 is going to be 'Next year'. Declaring that the Wii sales to be a 'fad', and that by christmas it will all be over. Also that the Wiimote was silly, and the Wii has no good games on it.
And it just makes me think, do these people deal in real logic?
I never believed the Gamecube would win the 7th war, it didn't have the power, appeal or games to do so. Not saying it was a flop - far from it. It had some amazing games, but against the Xbox and PS2.... well.... it came up short.
But the Wii... It just is amazing.
One guy on the forum (A 360 owner, no less), said about it, that maybe, it didn't have the killer hardcore games yet (I.e Gears of war, Halo?). But, he said he was at a family do, to which someone brough a Wii. And he was amazed at the intrest in it. He said that no other console had ever had so many people crowding around it before - 40 year old women, 10 year old boys, Fathers, Grandparents.... all rushing to have a go.
Yes the Wii can play like a normal console... with normal controls and games, and while it may not be as powerful as the others, I think the PS2 showed that you don't need to be the most powerful, to win.
But the 'ace' that the Wii has, is it's innovation.
I really can't see how it could fail, to be honest. if it kept going like it was now, I'm sure it would be a success, but we all know consoles do get better. The big titles are gonna start coming out. The usual ones and the new hits. But the thing I'm most excited to see, is what Nintendo are going to come up with next. What new idea. What new innovation they are gonna add to the Wii next...
Taking the DS as an example.. when it first was spoken about it sounded silly. Two screens? I must say I thought the idea was a bit stupid. But now I can't think off playing any different way. And it's hugely Sucessful. One of the most sucessful handhelds ever.
And also, there is the prospect to linking the DS to the Wii... meaning you would have not only the Wiimote to control games with movement, but touch screen input and microphone...
Summing up: I really am an all round console guy, have a PS2/Xbox - might even get a 360 soon. But really, how can people fail to be impressed by what Nintendo have achieved so far?

I can't help but smirk at the "just wait until next year! PS3 is going to eat the Revolution for breakfast then!" mentality. I'm quite frankly curious about how many PS3 sales are driven by the desire for Blu-Ray players that can do other stuff, too. After all, I do believe that I've read that backwards compatiblity for the PS3 is actually DECREASING as newer models are chucking expensive hardware necessary for proper compatibility in leiu of software upgrades. "Just wait a few months and we'll get your compatibility back!" seems to be a common statement by Sony.
Of course, just today I was reading about how some common sentiments about the Wiimote either result in games being to easy or too hard.
The Gamecube lost the war because A. no DVD playback B. smaller disks mean less content C. people are fickle. The other day I was reading an article written by a gamer who's getting a little ticked off that so much of the nextgen games are being designed from a "let's focus on high-tech graphics instead of plot and replayability" point of view. That's one reason why the Revolution is winning. After all, it's hardly the highdef king. It's the playability, the fun factor as it were, that wins gaming wars in the end. Consider that I play Tetris and Mario 3, STILL. Why? The fun factor. You can get immersed in it. From what I've heard, the Revolution has a fun factor that PS3 can't hope to have.
Of course, just today I was reading about how some common sentiments about the Wiimote either result in games being to easy or too hard.
Pretty true... Like the resident Evil 4 Wii... Using the wiimote does make it ever so much easier...

Yeah. Nail on the head stuff there. What games do you replay again and again? Ok, things like GTA are gonna be in there somewhere, but mainly it games like Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Multiplayer sports games... that sort of thing... Why? Because it's fun playing against other people! And something like Wii sports is great for that. It really was a genuis idea giving that game away free. Almost every people I show it to, Gamers and non Gamers alike are amazed by it, and even consider buying a Wii themselves...
To be honest when I think of the DS and the Wii, they just feel fresh to me. Exciting. Not that I don't think the PS3 and 360 haven't got their good/strong points, but, there isn't that much... new about them is there?
God Bless Nintendo.
And, if the mess this one up, I will find Mario and behead him.

I think the thing with the PS3 can be traced right back to the days of the original PS, of which even I, a technosceptic (once I have any piece of tech/software I usually love it, but initially I almost invariably look askance at it, and umm and ahh and try to poke as many holes as possible, and complain about how it's all too complicated, or they changed things too much, and how it wasn't like this in the old days. And then 6 months later I'll dig it out and love it. The one exception was the KotOR series, which from the word "go" I thought was great. Whew, what a long bracket...), had.
Back then, quite simply, the PSX won hands down. What competition was there? The Dreamcast? Don't make me laugh. The N64? What did it have beyond Goldeneye? Sure, it had Mario; the PSX had Crash Bandicoot, which was new, shiny, and above all, self-mocking. Mario racing? PSX had enough racing to slake anyone's thirst. And it looked better, and used CDs, which was somehow cooler than those naff-looking cartridges. It was the one, and we were fiercely loyal to it. Sony had done right by us, not like the second-rate N64, or the frankly laughable Dreamcast (what happened to that thing?!).
And then there was PS2. And I thought "sod that, I'm not paying £250 bloody quid for that. And the consoles passed me by. It didn't for others though, and sure, Sony had cut a few corners, so what? It was still a decent console, even if most of the really great games were just continuations of PSX games.
And now there's PS£, and it's a double-dealing, dirty-fighting fraud. But it's theirs, and theirs that loyalty, all the way back from then, and the memories.
That's what I think, anyway.
And also, Nintendo games are frankly, bloody annoying. Always have been. Always just too difficult, just beyond the point of being challenging. And repetitive, and tended, at least in the old days (by which I mean, Game Boy/GBC/NES/SNES/N64), to have the most annoying soundtracks possible.
If you want to know what I mean, play Super Mario Land 2. It would drive anyone mad, it really, really would.

1. You can save game data right on the thing.
2. More durable than discs. Casual use won't hurt them, an accidental drop won't ruin them.

It's somewhat sad to say, but I seem to have mostly lost my appetite for console gaming of any sort these days. I still give Gran Turismo 4 a whirl now and then, and even more occasionally I shoot stuff up in one of the GTA titles, but that's about it. What I have been playing is Civ 3 with occasional bouts of SimCity 3000 and OpenTTD in between, and hankering mightily for Theme Hospital, which hopefully I will be reunited with before the year is out.
I'd whole-heartedly agree that there's too much emphasis on shinyness these days - I recently bought Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War, which looks superb, and was fun for a little while, but has become just a tad repetitive. Sticking good graphics on top of a fun game is grand (witness Startopia), but almost nobody does, which is... depressing.

The first two are way too damned hard. The third is an absolutely amazing party game. I had no idea that the Bomberman franchise had ever churned out anything remotely decent. The game is that and more.

I'd imagine that the next console would have even cheaper legacy games. Then again, my understanding is that once a game is bought for a specific Revolution account, you can delete it and reinstall later as much as you want. Perhaps if you shut down your Revolution, you can just reinstall the same games onto your Revolution 2 for free. Only one system at a time, right?

The DS does indeed have built in wifi. I don't know how savvy you are with wifi networks (I'm not terribly so myself). The system itself requires nothing to go online other than a wireless network. You can input WEP encryption keys if you have a secured network in your home. However, you can't put in a MAC address login/password -- which is how my campus wifi network was set up.
It's hardly a deal breaker I'd think for the system however. You can play online or in person with friends on some games, but there are quite a few fantastic single player experiences to be found as well.
I own a Wii, DS, PSP, and 360 out of this generation's systems. The DS is by far the cheapest ($130 new), has been out the longest, and has the most developed library of them all. Also, it's well on track toward becoming the best selling system of all time -- which is especially impressive considering the current winner is the Game Boy. Yes, that includes all three iterations of the Game Boy.
There's no substantial difference between the DS and the Lite, at least in terms of playability. The Lite looks classier, the screen is brighter, and the stylus is heftier and easier to use. But other than that, you can basically use 'em both the same.
If you're seriously considering getting a system, it might be worth checking out some reviews on a site like http://www.ign.com or http://www.gamespot.com to see what there is on the system worth checking out. Keep in mind, both DSes play Game Boy Advance games too, so you've really got two systems worth of libraries available.

God, why do I take the bait? I've personally never seen any statistics for people sitting at home with old systems reluctant to buy new ones based on limited backward compatability. I can't imagine it's a very large number. It hasn't really stopped the 360 or the DS this generation, nor did it stiffle Super Nintendo sales. The 360 is tromping the PS3 in HD console sales, the DS is outselling the PSP 2 to 1, and the Super Nintendo maintained a similar lead against the formidable Sega Genesis. Most consumers don't really care too much about that sort of thing, if I may generalize. Certainly not the casual crowd.
And hey, some of us are enjoying Phantom Hourglass while keeping a perfectly capable GBA in the closet for that retro fix. Hooray!

I doubt that. I've replaced the batteries in several original game boy cartidges. The game I've had the longest though (Link's Awakening) hasn't died yet. It's sorta variable. But Nintendo didn't start using solid state in those until the DS, I think. Maybe the GBA, but I doubt it.

10-24-2007, 03:57 PM
You have? Wow. I've read the online instructions for that, and it still seems a bit complicated and risky.
I still wonder why they couldn't remake GB and GBC games for Virtual Console and you could sent it to a blank "Virtual Console" DS card that's designed for them. Since the DS doesn't have a Z80 chip (see my Gameboy DS rants on other threads for the significance of this) you'd have to emulate all of the games, but it must be doable. If the price in Wii Points is proportional to the age and sophistication, it'd probably end up something like original GB games for 300 Wii Points, GBC for 500, right? Plus dozens of games could fit on a card, no doubt.
ijdgaf
10-24-2007, 04:34 PM
Putting old Gameboy games on VC is totally doable. They recently added support on there for Neo Geo games, which weren't available at launch. So adding another system should be easy peasy as well.
Blank DS cartridges though? Not gonna happen. Nintendo consistantly goes out of there way to make their games on media that only they have access to. They don't want people to rip their stuff, or put out non-Nintendo approved software, etc. It's why the N64 didn't use CD-ROMs, why the GameCube and Wii use a proprietary optical disc, and why the DS uses nonstandard flash cards.
Nate the Great
10-24-2007, 04:46 PM
Well, not "blank" exactly. It'd have a sort of framing program for the Gameboy Virtual Console games. No doubt it'd have some form of security lockout in place to prevent anything except the Revolution that you specifically link to it (i.e. only Revolution number XXXX can communicate with DS number YYYY). I only say that it has to be a card because I don't think that a DS has any onboard memory, does it? Then again, what if the Gameboy games were stored on the Revolution and you could remote access it with the DS if you're in range? Those old games are so small that you probably could remotely play it in real time. It'd be only a step above the e-Reader, wouldn't it?
"easy peasy?"
Rewriting the VC to accept and transmit games from a new system is the least of our problems. It's getting it to the DS safely that's the problem.
ijdgaf
10-24-2007, 05:12 PM
Actually, the DS does have a bit of onboard memory. Unfortunately, it whipes clear every time you turn the system off. The memory is used for stuff like single card multiplayer, where somebody with the game transmits a small part of it to the other person's system, so they can play together without two copies.
Incidently, it's also used for demo downloads like you see at Gamestop, Target, etc. Which is coming to the Wii in the nearish future. A channel where you can download DS demos that'll stay on your system until you turn it off.
I guess in theory you could do something similar with old Game Boy games. The sleep mode for the DS is very efficient, so if you didn't mind having to play it and only it on your system until you beat it, it should be doable. Don't see it happening, but certainly feasable.
Nate the Great
10-25-2007, 01:00 AM

Oh, and to answer a question several posts up, it's actually pretty easy to add a battery to a cartridge. Just pick up the correct bit (which I had to do through a specialty store online who is STILL sending me junk mail). Unscrew the bit, crack out the battery, and ducktape a new one back in.
Easy peasy.

2. A Wiimote hooks onto the back or something, making the guitar a mere extension akin to a Wii Wheel.
3. The guitar uses a reciever that attaches to a Gamecube port, akin to a Wavebird.

4. None of the above, though 2 is closest.
The guitar hero guitar (seen here (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/899/899094/img_4689229.html), note location of Wiimote) is an extension that you plug the wiimote into, like you would with the nunchuck. It's not a wii wheel where it's just an elaborate piece of shaped plastic that doesn't actually do anything. Instead it plugs in and plays like you would expect, just with the wiimote attached as well.

So it's closer to a Classic Controller, only with a different shape and different interface design.
.... I mean, ok, he's a Hedgehog. But he's blue and spikey and very fast. What's not to love?

Yes Virginia, Sonic in Brawl is a good thing. If only as a symbol to stand in stark contrast of the "Sega does what Nintendon't" days of the 90s when Sonic and Mario were chewing on one another's ankles.
That, and his moveset looks pretty sweet.

I just saw a demo of Brawl on YouTube today, and I must admit that I'm as let down as I thought I'd be. All he does is spin like a buzzsaw randomly. Other than that he's just like most of the other fighters. He wasn't written to exist only on a strip of ground fifty feet long, he's supposed to be zapping at Mach Ten around Mobius. Brawl can't do him justice.

I'm beginning to think you collect unpopular opinions as a hobby, and use internet forums as a crude means to exhibit your assorted menagerie.

You don't need Smash Brothers to have the two Titans of Gaming interact. All you need is an environment that gives both of them an equal home field advantage. And face facts, a bowling-alley sized piece of dirt hovering in the air tends to give the advantage to Mario.

I figure at the very least that they shot Kennedy and faked the Moon landings, and I'm pretty sure they were responsible for the downfall of the Roman Empire too.

Anyway Back to the Wii....
Anyone seen that Endless Ocean thats due out tomorrow? (Might be called something different in the states). Looks pretty good... And an amazing soundtrack with it. I like the idea of a quiet relaxing game too. No people to kill, no bosses... just a nice quiet swim in a pretty place.
On the killing side though, there is RE: Umbrella Chronicles with the Wii Zapper!
Smash brothers is out soon too WITH SONIC! And then of course, it's the daddy.... Mario Galaxy...
One complaint though... Could they have not spread the games out a bit... I'm still moving through Resident Evil 4 Wii, and hardly started on old Metroid 3 (Though I'm gonna give it a bloody good try this weekend) And now 4 big named game are due in the same month?
Cheers Nintendo..

You can always speedrun while you wait, once the game's done.
Ok ok! The time has come. I now seem to have games that can play online or have online stuff. However I know only about 3 people with a Wii... and one has not the internet.
So I am requesting to swap Friend codes with anyone here. You're a weird, moody, geeky bunch, but they seem to be my defineing characteristics so.... and needs must eh?
My code... (After I finally found it..) is

Any others?

It'll probably take me a bit to dig up my code. I'll try to remember. But it's almost trivial as I don't own anything online yet, and won't until February (Smash Bros.)
Just to let y'all know, Toys'R'Us has just about the craziest damned deal I've ever seen on Super Mario Galaxy. Buy it from them next week and you get a free $25 gift certificate. So if you were gonna buy it anyway, now you 25 bucks toward your next game purchase.
And everyone is releasing all their big guns this time of year. It is not a good time of year to be broke and a gamer, unfortunately. I got a new 360 and a Wii and a ton I want for each and... gah. Hopefully I'll find a job soon, add another paycheck, and pick up Assassin's Creed too.

Is it ever a good time to be a broke gamer? Come to think of it, for me it's no so bad because no money means fewer decisions to make. Still don't even have a Gamecube.

Now my Mum wants a Wii, but my Dad says wait until the next thing they bring out. What's in the works for Nintendo? Or is Sony/Playstation bringing out a remote operated game system at any point in the near future?
In other news, I did buy myself a DS. Great games, but I'm not likely to ever be in one of their online-y places, and wouldn't know what do do if I was. No one else I know has a DS either. Great games though!

Oh, boy, the next Nintendo console...
From the way the press releases sound, Nintendo isn't even keeping it's head above water making Revolutions. Think about it, if they were really together than scalpers wouldn't be making oodles of money on the secondary market, would they?
Of course, where can Nintendo go now with a new console anyway? Of course even they have to admit that graphics somewhere on par with their contemporaries is a must, as TV technology increases by leaps and bounds. One innovation that comes to mind is some kind of sensor system. Couldn't they invent a set of wireless sensors to attach to your hands, feet, and head to sort of take the Wiimote to the next level? Make a motion as if you're turning your head to the right, and the camera moves to the right. Run in place, and your character moves faster. The hand sensors would let you make karate chops and your character would do the same. Or you could balance a virtual basketball on your finger. Or put a hand to your forehead and the camera would zoom in on the background, enabling you to "see" farther. Heck, hear an enemy behind you and make a backhanded punch. I love seeing backhanded punches. :)

If they can make the Wii remote, then I don't see it being too hard to make that sort of setup.
Is the playstation likely to bring out a remote-like system? I really prefer Playstation to Nintendo. (*ducks rotten fruit*).
Does anyone here HAVE a Playstation 3 for that matter? Was it worth the prohibitive cost?
Nate the Great
01-05-2008, 10:22 PM
Yeah, but which Playstation do you prefer to which Nintendo? This isn't like the OLD days when a person was a Nintendo person or a Sega person and ne'er the twain shall meet.

PS2 > any Nintendo home console I have so far played (having not yet actually played the Wii). What's the appropriate acronym? IMHO?
I don't count the hand held games (DS, Game Boy, PSP, etc.) in this assessment.
