View Full Version : Fiver quote game

Since Zeke suggested this game in the other quote thread...

The rules are the same as <a href="showthread.php?t=1615">the other quote game</a>, with the following additions:
1. You can't post your own fiver
2. You can't guess your own fiver.

"Oh what chaos Mandel brought."

Go.

Awesome. Hope you don't mind my moving this to 5M.net Talk and adding a link.

Since I have a fairly blatant advantage, I'll always wait 24 hours or so and let others go before me... although I must confess I don't remember this one anyway. Pretty sure I have the author pegged, though.

NAHTMMM

Oh this is one of my all-time favorites. It's Derek Dean's TNG one with the bit of sand that everyone assumes is alive because they've taken too many trips to the sand bar, right?

"What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to help you."
"Well, I wish you'd stop."

Zeke
06-27-2012, 01:52 PM
That's not a win yet, Nah. You're right, but you have to name the episode.

NAHTMMM
06-27-2012, 07:36 PM
Couldn't tell you -- I only know TOS episode names by heart. :) Someone else can come up with it.

. . . Oh, it's "Home Soil", right?

Zeke
06-27-2012, 09:01 PM
Yep. NOW your quote is in play.

Zeke
06-28-2012, 10:19 PM
No takers? Shot in the dark, then... "The Jem'Hadar".

NAHTMMM
06-29-2012, 01:00 PM
Nope, wrong Trek series.

Zeke
06-29-2012, 08:57 PM
"The Icarus Factor" or "Yesterday's Enterprise"? If not, I think it's time for a good solid hint.

NAHTMMM
06-30-2012, 12:30 AM
Wrong Trek series again.

This exchange happens just before someone finds shuttle debris. Legible shuttle debris.

P.S.: Whoooa. When did fivers start carrying that "five" favicon in the URL bar? Funky. :)

Zeke
07-01-2012, 06:00 AM
"Galileo Seven" is the only one that comes to mind. If that's not it, probably time to reveal it and post a new one.

(You're just noticing the favicon now? It's been there since '03. Unless you're seeing something <i>other</i> than a clock logo, that is.)

NAHTMMM
07-01-2012, 10:22 PM
All those destroyed VOY shuttles and you went with a TOS episode? ;)

No, it's from "Initiations", with Kahr annoyed by Chakotay. I like that exchange so much.* I've been on either side of it many a time.

New one:

"That's it! I've had it with you people mocking my uselessness! I quit!"
"You already resigned."
"No making fun of my intelligence either."

The favicon I'm seeing on the subsites and individual fivers is a white 5 against a black-and-gray background. Maybe it's been there all along too, but I just don't remember it being there.

* (And of course the author isn't half-bad either.)

Zeke
07-02-2012, 01:24 AM
That's very weird. I don't remember making one like that. What browser are you using?

Normally I would let someone else try first, but since activity's been low so far, I'm gonna guess. And an episode where someone useless resigns... that's gotta be "The Loss".

Nate the Great
07-02-2012, 03:17 AM
Yeah, I'm sorry activity is so low in this thread. I can remember lines from episodes much better than fivers. Thus I can't really play this game, as simply googling a phrase within a certain website seems rather petty, even if it wasn't cheating.

Sa'ar Chasm
07-02-2012, 03:29 AM
Well, there's always going back and rereading the entire archive.

And I was totally going to guess Troi, dammit. *hmph*.

Hmm...given that Zeke seems to be both the keenest player and best guesser, *and* the most prodigious fiverer, maybe the "can't guess your own" rule should be modified to "can't guess your own for x hours or until everyone else has whiffed on it."

Zeke
07-02-2012, 04:04 AM
Yeah, maybe I was wrong that this thread would be a good idea. I have definitely read everything on this site at least once, so if even <i>I'm</i> having trouble, the game probably won't work.

Maybe some other kind of participatory thread would lend itself better to this site's content. (We certainly have enough to keep one going.) Any suggestions?

Round-robins are fun. Sort of "fanfic by committee" -- you start with a premise (the Enterprise sends a landing party down to a planet) and each poster contributes as much to the story as s/he wishes. One sentence, a paragraph, two paragraphs, whatever. Stop mid-sentence if you like.

If you needed it to be relevant to this site, it could be "fiver an episode round-robin," but I think the chaos of a group fanfic story keeps momentum going.

An old Firefox. The favicon seems back to normal now. I wish I'd taken a screenshot, but it was simple enough that I can produce a decent facsimile.

I think I must have briefly crossed over into a universe where this started out as a Farscape parody site. The 5 looked like the S in Farscape at a glance.

[edit]Kinda like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v27/Sloublues/fake_5icon.png), but with the 5 centered and a bit skinnier.

Yup. Troi mockery is always fun. :)

Yeah, maybe I was wrong that this thread would be a good idea.
I like it, but I'm kinda approaching it as an excuse to talk about favorite fivers and humor and such-not. And the board could use a few experimental threads.

[edit]Kinda like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v27/Sloublues/fake_5icon.png), but with the 5 centered and a bit skinnier.

Oh! I can tell you right away what that is. It's the "previous" or "next" arrow, reduced to the size of a favicon. Like this:

<img src="../images/prev.png" width=16 height=16>

Sometimes browsers mess up favicons, using cached versions and such. Apparently yours just grabbed an image from the page, like Facebook does when you post a link.

Whoa. You know, I think we could build that into a slightly more formal process, apply some basic rules of order, and end up producing some really high-quality fivers.

We could call it "Fiver by Committee."

While we're deciding what to do with the thread, let me toss you one of my personal all-time favourites:

"Um... no... let's not destroy it. It's not a threat to us. I mean, look how small it is... (points fingers at the viewscreen) It's tiny!"
(silence)
"It's not small, it's FAR AWAY!"

I'm going to go with the The Corbomite Maneuver or Q-Who.

And now that I've guess I'm going to go Google it.

Doesn't ring a bell for me. It seems like the sort of thing an undercover spy might say, though.

This one sounds familiar but I don't remember where it's from.

Actually it sounds like Zap Brannigan and Kif from Futurama.

Zeke
07-07-2012, 04:06 AM
Nah is on the right track.

Sa'ar Chasm
07-07-2012, 04:33 PM
Indeed. It might help if you know that it's two different people speaking.

NAHTMMM

That episode is called "Face of the Enemy."

Zeke
07-08-2012, 11:12 PM
Yep, that's the one. It's a Nic Corelli fiver.

NAHTMMM
07-10-2012, 06:10 PM
Wow. Well, Wowbagger got the title, so it's his turn.

Wowbagger is next in both games! Does "two" qualify as a sweep?

Sa'ar Chasm
07-10-2012, 09:07 PM
No, it qualifies as someone who doesn't log in often enough *g*

Wowbagger
07-11-2012, 07:13 AM
Fortunately, Zeke messages me on Facebook to tell me "LOG IN YOU OLD POPSICLE!"

See, I thought NAHTMMM got the kill credit on this one, and all I did was get the +250 for the assist. But clearly I've been playing too much Tribes:Ascend, which is now free-to-play on Steam.

Ah! For some reason, this fiver made me laugh harder than any other fiver line ever, back when I was twelve or whatever.

"You call that a tricorder?"
"Put the spoon away"

evay
07-11-2012, 12:30 PM
Is that TNG's "First Contact," the episode?

Zeke
07-11-2012, 02:30 PM
If so, then it was a reference. Unless I'm way off, that joke originated not in a fiver at all, but in <a href="../features/paneldemonium1.html">Paneldemonium</a>.

Wowbagger
07-11-2012, 02:48 PM
Paneldemonium not technically a fiver? Because, yes -- that particular line is from Part 2.

Zeke
07-11-2012, 04:39 PM
I sort of assumed it was just fivers, but you have a point. There's lots of memorable content in other areas of the site. Let's broaden the thread's scope, then.

For instance (since it's my turn now), in Minutemen Part 1, I had a gag about the Guardian of Forever having waited SINCE BEFORE YOUR SUN BURNED HOT IN SPACE for its two guest fivers to be published. That was a followup joke -- the Guardian had mentioned these guest fivers before. Anyone remember where?

NAHTMMM
07-11-2012, 10:25 PM
I didn't recall there being two instances of that joke, but I think the other is probably in a TJI. I definitely think the Guardian has cameoed in one of those.

Zeke
07-12-2012, 02:23 AM
Yes, it was a TJI. It would be silly to ask for the issue number or headline, so to count as a win, can you say what that one was about?

NAHTMMM
07-12-2012, 07:58 PM
Presumably one where you had gone missing or the one where people discuss time travel phenomena.

[edit] Peeking at the list, the last one is correct.

"NINJA VANISH!"
"But you're a Hell Knight! They're the ninjas!"
"A guy can dream, can't he?"

Zeke
07-12-2012, 10:21 PM
That sounds like a videogame I haven't played yet. Final Fantasy Tactics?

NAHTMMM
07-12-2012, 11:20 PM
Yup! :) The third chapter of the fiver, strictly, but I think every iteration of that joke is funny. Your turn.

Zeke
07-13-2012, 04:08 AM
"Oh, thank goodness! The military will save us!"
"Um, yeah. Save you." (BLAM BLAM BLAM)

NAHTMMM
07-13-2012, 02:59 PM
I wouldn't know that one if I hadn't been reading some of the other videogame fivers last night (and not just because I expected a Mega Man quote from you). It's from Half Life.

"Brigadier, leave this doll factory at once!"
"Sorry, General, I've got a view to a kill and I'm going to use it!"

Sa'ar Chasm
07-13-2012, 06:02 PM
Well, it's Doctor Who, and not the recent one.

Beyond that, I haven't got much.

NAHTMMM
07-14-2012, 09:57 PM
Correct, as far as it goes . . .

Sa'ar Chasm
07-14-2012, 11:53 PM
It's not going any farther.

Zeke
07-15-2012, 12:54 AM
Okay! Here's my reasoning: first line makes it clear that this is an Auton episode. It has to be the old series since I did the only new-series fiver involving Autons and would thus recognize it immediately (and anyway, the Brig is in it). I have no idea which old serials had Autons in them -- besides "Terror of the Autons", which we don't have a fiver for. However, the <i>blurb</i> for "Spearhead From Space" has a dummy joke in it, so that's my guess. Nah?

NAHTMMM
07-16-2012, 12:37 AM
Yup, "Spearhead From Space". :)

Zeke
07-16-2012, 02:53 AM
Nice. (Side note: how were you expecting me to quote a Mega Man fiver? So far, they're all by me.)

"Blecch, how could you possibly still have had Jack's gum?"

NAHTMMM
07-17-2012, 12:01 AM
Nice. (Side note: how were you expecting me to quote a Mega Man fiver? So far, they're all by me.)
Oh, that's true. Um . . . it was late at night? And I wanted an excuse to read videogame fivers? Okay, I just forgot about that rule. But the other reasons are true too.

"Blecch, how could you possibly still have had Jack's gum?"
Didn't ring a bell the first time I looked at it. Now that I look at it again, it still doesn't ring a bell. Since it implies someone going around kissing everyone, I'd guess something like The OC . . . except I don't remember the fiver having a prosaic name like Jack in it.

. . . Plus, I guess you wrote the fiver anyway . . . ;)

Zeke
07-19-2012, 03:22 AM
Hint: Valium would get this one quickly. I thought Nate would too, but that's because I always forget he's not one of our several fans of the series in question.

Zeke
07-22-2012, 10:48 AM
No? Okay, it's from Scooter's fiver of "New Earth", the first regular Tenth Doctor episode of Doctor Who. The gum first appeared in "The Parting of the Ways", the last Ninth Doctor episode, in which too much kissing takes place.

Here's a softball. "The world of men is once again doomed."

Sa'ar Chasm
07-22-2012, 06:06 PM
Lord of the Rings?

Edit: I didn't specify which part of the trilogy it was from, does that count? Plus I went and Googled it so I can't guess it now.

Zeke
07-22-2012, 09:42 PM
Yeah, I'll count it. I had to check which part too. (Two Towers.) You're up.

Sa'ar Chasm
07-22-2012, 09:54 PM
"Have you ever experienced a Klingon wedgie?"

NAHTMMM
07-23-2012, 01:21 PM
My gut reaction says Worf in TNG.

Sa'ar Chasm
07-23-2012, 05:39 PM
It's about Worf, but not said by Worf.

Zeke
07-24-2012, 06:56 AM
We need some context, I think. This could be from any episode with Worf in it.

Sa'ar Chasm
07-24-2012, 03:08 PM
TNG. The subject of the wedgie was something Worf wasn't actually trying to kill (yet it ended up dead nonetheless).

NAHTMMM
08-09-2012, 02:07 PM
Still drawing a blank as to the episode. :(

Sa'ar Chasm
08-09-2012, 04:37 PM
I'll quote the entire scene around it:

Worf: The creature has immobilized us and is bombarding us with radiation!
Picard: We have to startle it into letting us go, but without harming it. Set phasers on "wedgie" and fire!
Worf: Direct hit. The creature is dead, sir.
Picard: Dead? How is that possible?
Riker: Have you ever experienced a Klingon wedgie, sir?

I'm not sure what this XML-talk is, but if that entry seems to take up more code than a simple cut-and-paste from the web page, I must've cut-and-pasted it either from the TV Tropes page or my personal fiver quote file.

No worries. I know all too well the problem of spambots joining forums; I run a vb 4 install for another group. Spambots still invade, even after putting a trivia question into the registration process. Eventually, I just ended up putting in an Introduction forum where new people ONLY could post a new thread saying "I'm a real person please approve me". It was the only thing that was 100% reliable.

I haven't seen Alcar Dovan in a while. He probably goes by something different here, that's just his Excelsior character name, so he may actually be here and I have no idea he's here. I knew him back when we were in Bravo Fleet, shooting the breeze on RSB.

...and right, I'm wrong. Apparently "Prime Factors" and "Parallax" are two different episodes. Silly me.

Heh heh, "Alcar Dovan" indeed. Around these parts he's Wowbagger. (And he's not gone -- we talk all the time on Facebook, though he does sometimes need reminding that this forum exists.) Are you also involved with Excelsior?

Believe it or not, even your method isn't perfect. It'll keep out spamBOTs, but not spam posters in general. Some of them are humans working for hire -- we had one here who confessed to me when his client didn't pay him.

And finally the quote is identified! "Prime Factors" is right (and that's why I couldn't guess: it's one of mine). You're up.

No, I have no involvement with Excelsior. Just a fellow writer.

Ziyal: Nerys! It's me!
Kira: Wow! I'm so happy to see you!

Good God, you finally took my advice and registered!

Now write a fiver! WRITE WRITE WRITE!

I know FlyingGremlin from our old days in the trenches on Relay Station Bravo, back before they reset all the forums there. I vouch for him! (http://ds9.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/6x15/honoramongthieves_387.jpg)

Yes.

I'd start writing a Fiver, but I really don't know where to start. That, and I seem to be missing several important memory engrams... and DVDs.

Hey, wait, they reset the forums? And I had the highest post count record there for 3 years! Dang it.

@Topic: "Return to Grace"?

...glad I'm not the only one that comes in from the shadows with the wrong guess on the first try.

Let's try "In Purgatory's Shadow" and "A Time to Stand".

Btw, if you do think of something you're interested in fiving, drop me a line. The best time to plant a fiver is 20 years ago, the second best is now (since I'll still help myself to those 20 years).

Nope. And here I thought this was going to be an easy one, considering Ziyal was in 9 episodes total.

Good thing I started to read these many years ago.

I will drop you a line, after my work calms the heck down.

Hmm! Now that I think about it, Ziyal was probably evacuated with the civilians and might not have been back by the start of S6. Let's try "Rocks and Shoals" and "Sons and Daughters".

evay, off-topic, I'd like you to know that I typed "evay.ca" into my browser just now when attempting to visit eBay.

"Sons and Daughters" was the answer.

Now you're up.

Pfft. That's what Chakoteya.net is for.

(Also CBS.com, I think. Certainly Netflix.)

On further looking into it, it looks like they had some kind of catastrophic database corruption. Whatever. I'm still frosted about it -- we had some times there, man! Some real times!

I also guess wrong on the second, third, and fourth tries. I'm terrible at quotes, and only marginally better at Guess The Screenshot.

And TWOP, if the show's old enough. I've often relied on Keckler's recaps for ENT.

Next up:

"Okay, someone put 'Rescue chick from Christmas decoration' on the 'To Do' list."

Must not be a Trek one. Honestly no clue.

CBS.com has a country wall. Boo-urns.

Netflix, I can't justify spending the money on along with the cable subscription that my girlfriend insists on having. Half the titles of the US version and most of it is padded out by foreign films.

Although that Chakoteya.net thing works well for me. I PM'd Zeke, but I have a feeling I have to move to another computer and email him (at work computer, no personal email at desk).

And I think I got it now. It's the Final Fantasy one.

Yeesh, those games are long. I'd hate to be the person whom has to go through FFVII and try to make a fiver out of that.
