View Full Version : Enterprise Cancelled

It doesn't get any more official than this. (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/9469.html)

I'm more upset than I have any right to be over a television show. ENT did not deserve this, especially now. Maybe this was inevitable now that good writing and acting have become irrelevant to a show's success, but we don't have to like it.

I'm going to make a restriction for this thread that I've never made before. I know a lot of you are indifferent to ENT's cancellation or even happy about it, and you have that right. But don't post in this thread. This is a Star Trek forum and the people who will be disappointed by this news don't need to feel worse. I tolerate bashing -- but not today.

Why? Why? WHY? Ok in tbeory I know why, but WHY?

A brick apiece for Moonves and Ostroff.

I just heard the news. And I found out from my lovely friend who said:

* Runty is happy they finally cancelled enterprise

He was promplty kicked from my channel. This is a sad sad day not only for Star Trek but for Science Fiction television as a whole. The reality tvs have won and prime time will never be the same again. Maybe, in another few years, there will be tastefull tv on again. But after May 13th, I won't be watching any more shows on network television. Enterprise was my last holdout, and now it's gone.

Damnit.

Season 4 has so far been doing everything right. It's very dissapointing that they're never going to be able to build on that.

Xeroc

This <u>really</u> stinks. :(

I totally agree with Draknek, as I would have loved to see them build more on the successes of Season 4.

Have I said this stinks yet? :(

How can they cancel it after the total awesomeness that is Season Four?
Chop a well-written, well-acted piece of science fiction and replace it with some cheap brainless reality show that'll die within six months, that's the good old American TV exec mentality.

I just KNEW this would happen, but I didn't think it would happen so soon...

Right from the moment B&B said ENT had lived out its franchise, I KNEW it would be canceled, I didn't know when, but I KNEW it would happen.

Sigh... oh well, I guess we'll have to wait until the next series.

Nan

Aw, damn. I was starting to quite like this series. The writing had really tightened up and was going in interesting directions, especially the sort of "Birth of the Federation" angle.

Stupid TPTB.

Okay, this wipes, sucks, blows and stinks, in that order.

Words cannot begin to describe how upset I am right now.

I....feel like killing something.

...

If you notice any undue screaming from the vicinity of Paramount studious or UPN, please either ignore or come help.

KillerGodMan

^ I'm helping!

There IS a bright side to this though, there'll be enough episodes for ENT to go into continuation, which is good in it's own retrospect

I swear to God, I really want to light a candle right now and just go stand outside for a while.

:(

I can't believe people would rather watch the reality shit mulling around their screens than this.

This really stinks, but perhaps they were just running out of ideas of things to do without interferring with the Star Trek timeline. Oh wait, they already did.

Opium
02-03-2005, 07:21 AM
Hopefully they will have time to write up some good ending episodes without too much buildup...sometimes having a whole season to write an ending season can turn sour, like it did with Buffy...after Tara died, it just sucked, with the exception of Spike.

So hopefully ENT will have just enough time to write a good ending, without getting too outrageous.

Have they decided to end the Trek franchise? Because, I remember someone suggested way back before ENT that a series about Section 31 would be interesting...or about Starfleet training.

Oo! Oo! Maybe ENT will do a Buffy and move to UP... I mean, move to the WB?

Zeke, I totally understand. I also am way too upset ...it's just a tv show? I almost cried... ok now I am crying. :) It's just so sad. There has been Trek on my TV since I was 7. My dad watched TNG and sometimes I'd watch with him. Since I was 13, I watched Trek religiously and now when a show has finally proven itself it gets cancelled? It's just so sad and disappointing. If it had happened at the end of Season 2 I probably wouldn't have cared as much. But not after this year and the spoilers only point to it getting better.

Well some people are happy today, so, thanks Zeke, for making this a non bashing Enterprise thread.

Derek
02-03-2005, 12:45 PM
NOOOOOOO! How can this happen? There is no justice.

What really sucks is that next year I'll be down to only one show: Smallville. And if you know my opinion of Smallville, you'll know just how awful that really is for me.

At least ENT is coming out on DVD this year so I can have the four great seasons they did produce. But I suspect that, like Angel, I'll always watch the last episode with regret that they didn't get that next season.

No, they only care about ratings. And when Americans only want to see half clad skinny women posing infront of the camera waiting to 1) eat something disgusting, 2) Perform in a crazy/scary challenge that requires them to jump and down and get wet, or 3) take off all there clothes and pose for pictures with feathers only covering their breasts. This is what happens.

Of course, Science Fiction is renowned for having its barely clothed skinny women in every show and series. So what the heck..

I can't believe it's gone. In my entire life there has only been 5 months in which star trek hasn't been on. The 5 months between me being born and TNG starting. I'm gonna miss it.

I propose that the next series should be about Captain Tucker and Commander Reed running Jupiter Station, with Phlox as the wacky next-door neighbor. That allows Shran and Soval to stop by at need, and Archer can drop by to take them on three-ep arcs in search of somethingorother.

I will miss Trip and Malcolm like I've never missed any characters before. :(

I don't think there ARE any other "current" TV shows out there that I have the slightest interest in watching (besides game shows). Oh, well, I guess "Duck Dodgers" is still doing original episodes, but I've managed to see that, what, all of three times or so? (But then I only saw maybe a handful of "Enterprise" episodes...)

And hockey's screwed up and football's gonna be gone in a few days...bleh. "Home Improvement" reruns for me, I guess! ;)

Um, lessee...

I guess I have my animes...all four of them left as another one got the axe earlier this year. And I can, um, I dunno, read I guess.

I guess there's always fanfiction, too...

Nothing will really replace Enterprise for me, though.

Might this be a good time to do Enterprise Week? Maybe rally some further enthusiasm for the show through parody?

But it seems likely I'll be living through those online fan films for a couple of years, and through the other productions like the excellent http://darkerprojects.com/section31.html. I'm thinking of starting my own audio series to try to keep fan interest up. And for the fame and amusement, of course.

Man... so sorry to hear...

I'm still stuck back at the very beginning of Season 3... right before it starts getting good... But considering how great everyone says it gets from there, I'm very disappointed to hear I've only got two seasons of goodness to look forward to. And when I'm done with those, I'll have cause for full-blown wrath.

I do hope this isn't the end of Trek for the near future, that they'll be starting a new series in a few years... Cross my fingers and hope.

Alexia, I'm with you - thank heavens for Atlantis! Luckily, the ratings there seem pretty good, and I think shows are a little safer on the SciFi channel.

I wish I believed that could work, Wowbagger. But fan campaigns just don't have the power they used to now that every show and its sister has one. Look how well the campaigns to save Angel and Wonderfalls did. And anyway, as much as I flatter myself sometimes, 5MV is just not that popular a site. If Penny Arcade or Homestar Runner or Eric Conveys an Emotion urged its fans to help save Enterprise, it might -- might -- make a difference. But not me.

I have every intention of doing fivers for the rest of the series. Hell, thanks to Paramount's brilliant decision, I'm now more than half done. But I'm not going to pretend my doing so can help in any way.

Zeke, if everyone believed that nothing would get done. Doctor Who had to survive through webcast, audio and book, and has only come back now largely thanks to the perseverence of fans . Theres nothing stopping webcasts/audio/book versions of ENT. In fact, there's no reason why some of the people here couldn't write it. As the title music (infuriating in the extremes as it is) says, you have to have faith
I'm sorry to see it go, when it had such promise.

After the move to Friday, I wasn't suprised. I couldn't watch it most Fridays because of Basketball games preempting it (despite the fact that we have the worst record in the league).

It's a shame, episodes such as Observer Effect were the best Enterprise had ever had.

Ah, well, I still have Lost.

I am usually stoic as a vulcan but now I must have gone into Ponn Farr or something because I alternately want to break down and weep (no, not just cry, weep) and kill someone, anyone (especially the ones who dont agree with me 100%), and five minutes later I want to fly over to america and get on my knees and beg.

This is getting repetitive, but...

This really, really, sucks.

I wonder if Moonves realizes just how much of an idiot he really is. He cancels the [expletive] show just when it [expletive] hits its [expletive - you get the idea] prime.

This really hits home. There's been Star Trek on TV since I was born - hell, since [i]before I was born. I'm am really very pissed.

On a similar note, Reality TV is the second greatest tragedy to ever befall mankind. Whoever came up with the concept should be made to stand trial for crimes against humanity    .

I completely agree with this entire statement. ENT is the last show I've been watching on TV. Now the only reason I'll need one is to watch the DVDs. Over at the TrekBBS a bunch of fans have started a campaign to raise the $35 million or so needed to fund the show. I don't really think it'll succeed but... it'll be interesting to watch.

I'm not a fan of most of the crap on the airwaves either, but I do think "reality TV" often gets a bad rap, being condemned as a genre more unfairly than we would do to a bad sitcom. To quote (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6180426/) one of the co-creators of Television Without Pity: "There are good and bad drama series, good and bad sitcoms, and good and bad reality shows, and in the end, smart viewers are going to watch the good shows regardless of what genre they fall into." I take comfort in that, as well as the fact that people all said that sitcoms were dead in the '80s. Enter The Cosby Show, Cheers, and Seinfeld. I think there's hope for television yet. It just might take a while for the networks to realize that while reality TV may get ratings, it's not going to stick around or make them more money in the long run.

I merely meant to say that, in its current form, reality television is mostly (read: not entirely, but almost) so much worthless garbage. But you're right - every genre has its worthwhile shows, bar none.

I'll get the honey and fire ants.

(I have never seen any reality TV past 2 episodes of the first survivor and I have never so much glanced at American Idol. Perhaps the popularity of the stuff at my vapid-minded, hypocritical, unaccepting high school had something to do with that.)

Mark Burnett also created Eco-Challenge, which used to be my vicious, vicious evil voyeuristic pleasure when I still got the channel it aired on. Moroccan stomach flu! Evil Bornean leeches from hell! A 80% (and higher) failure rate!

Watching with vindictive glee the hubris of the unprepared give way under the hideous physical and emotional strain of one of the hardest expedition races out there. Plus, the purse barely covered costs, making the entire thing pretty much just a feather in your cap. Your blistered, leech-bled, frost-bitten cap.

Ahhh. Now THAT was good times.
