First off, the first episode of [i:post_uid0]Scream of the Shalka[/i:post_uid0] is up on the BBC Cult site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/shalka/).

Second, I found a very funny fan site (http://nitro9.earth.uni.edu/doctor/cdguide/index.html) run by a fella called Charles Daniels. You don't really have to be a DW geek to find it funny either.[/color:post_uid0]

Gallifrey. That's freaky.

See, just now during my boring-ass bioinformatics lecture I was trying to come up with a good first name for one of the characters in the novel I'm working on. His last name was Morton, so I was sitting in lecture spinning my pen and going, "Morton... Morton... what kind of first name goes well with Morton?"

Yep, you guessed it. Gallifrey Morton.

Now you're telling me that Gallifrey, a name I just pulled out from some dark obscure corner of my mind, is some kind of Doctor Who reference? I think I've already mentioned before on the forum that I've never even been within five miles of a Doctor Who episode, so there's abso-fragging-lutely no way I would have known.

So, this is the [i:post_uid0]second[/i:post_uid0] time a startling coincidence involving me, Doctor Who and this forum has occurred.

Should I be freaked out?[/color:post_uid0]

Well, the link should be http://gallifreyone.com o' course.

So, let's see, you picked the name of the Doctor's home planet (for so Gallifrey is) out of thin air after having successfully avoided Doctor Who your entire life. I think that means that you must be a lost regeneration of a famous Time Lady, tragically suffering from amnesia (much like Agatha Christie). Don't worry, your past libves will all come back to you eventually.

Crikey. Usually to resurrect a thread this dead you need a lightning rod and a hunchbacked assitant.

Anyway, I think the link that Scooter means is this one (http://www.gallifreyone.org/). BBCi's [i:post_uid0]Doctor Who[/i:post_uid0] site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho) is also a good place for news. According to it, a producer for the new series has been chosen, which is good.

Oh, and just in case anyone is at all in any way interested, I read on the BBCi Who site that another ebook is on it's way.[/color:post_uid0]

"Hello Rose, I'm the Doctor. Now run for your life!"

You know, that wasn't half bad. It wasn't perfect by a long shot, but it still most definitely Doctor Who. From the teaser trailers and whatnot that I'd seen prior to this first episode (entitled "Rose" for those that don't know) left me a little doubtful that Chris Eccleston would make a good Doctor, but you know, he really does.

Chancellor Valium
03-27-2005, 04:24 PM
The acting was very good. The SFX, again, very good, and so was the dialogue. But the actual plot was, I felt, abysmal, and much too fast. there wasn't enough to sink your teeth into it, Russel T Davies' outrageous silliness with the wheely-bin, the london eye, etc - eugh. Still a promising start - let's hope the spin out the next few stories, and, despite all this, Eccleston comes over well as the Doctor, despite all my doubts......

Scooter
03-30-2005, 09:16 AM
I agree from what I've seen that it's not perfect but definitely has a Doctor Who feel about it. Much, much better than Timelash... ;)

Favorite bit so far has to be the cheeky nod to the Doctor being an alien who's nonetheless British (handled much more clunkily in the movie): "Lots of planets have a north!"

Definitely still excited and desperate to get it actually broadcast here in the US.

Also, downloaded Dr Who Confidential and enjoyed that very much as well--good of them to integrate the old and new series, complete with interviews with Doctors 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 (where's Paul?), plus Billie--and Katy Manning! Good nostalgia plus good tidbits from the new series.

Chancellor Valium
03-30-2005, 10:42 AM
The reason there is no Mcgann interview is becasue the beeb seems desperate to wipe out the memory of the TVM..........embarassed, perhaps?

PointyHairedJedi
03-30-2005, 01:32 PM
Well, I woulnd't quite say that, Valium. If they were embarassed why would they have published over a hundred eighth Doctor novels? Not to mention the comics and the Big Finish audios. Everything I've seen suggests that rather than just throw all this continuity at people and have them be confused (becuase it is new viewers the Beeb is after, not just the existing fans), they're going to work up to it gradually. I rather suspect that when the next series rolls around (and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a next series), and the new viewers are more knowledgeable about Time Lords and all that, then we will see something pertaining to McGann's regeneration into CE. I can't see Russell T Davies not taking the chance to do that when the new series has gotten itself a bit more established.

It's official! David Tennant will be the tenth Doctor. Personally I'm looking forward to it, though for some bizarre reason some seem to feel that he's "too young". Mind you, they probably said the same thing about Davison back in '82, and Tennant, though he looks young, is actually six years older than Davison when he took up the role.

Hopefully we're going to get more than just one season out of this guy. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing the second series, even though I haven't seen Tennant in action. Russell Davies says he's excited about doing a regeneration, and since Eccleston only signed on for a year to start with it seems he's been planning how to handle it in the back of his head since the planning stages (which explains why the end of Ep. 13 is custom made for killing off the Doctor).

So far, and particularly after seeing "Unquiet Dead," I'm very happy with the way things are going and have confidence that how Davies will plan the future will yield a good ride.

^ Except with neck-snappings and strangulation. :D

I think maybe they're trying a little hard to make sure the show has some child-friendly elements (wheelie-bins that swallow people, farting, etc.), but DW has always had a little of that kind of thing anyway.

It does seem to me that many want this show to be totally perfect, for every single episode to be flawless, which is rather silly when you look back over the history of the show and consider that while Who can be truly fantastic at times, it can also be utterly dreadful. It would be nice if some would remember that.

Hee hee, Zeke made a Doctor Who joke -- there's hope for him yet ;)

This will surprise no one but I disagree emphatically with the idea that the new series is "kiddy" oriented. The Ninth Doctor's exuberant demeanor is only the deliberately misleading surface of a dark and complicated interplay between more and less positive views of human nature, responsibility, and capacity.

Of course, that's just my opinion. Those who do not see merit in the new series are missing out, but they're free to do so. This often turns out to be the case with exceptional sf/f TV (Farscape, Firefly, etc.)--the depths and innovations seem to prove elusive beyond the base of fans who discover them and own them. And then they get canceled. Meanwhile the public watches terribly blatant stuff like Taken and thinks it's subtle.

Well, "Dalek" looks like it will be teh aw3some (I promise I will never, ever do that again). It rather looks like that instead of one overall theme for this season we're getting a mix - some darker stories and some more light-hearted ones, of which "Aliens of London"/"World War Three" was definitely the latter. I thought it was a nice conclusion anyway; certainly made a change of pace from aliens trying to take over the Earth, you know, just because, which Who has certainly been guilty of in the past. It rather poked fun at it I suppose too, which I like. Doctor Who would be a disaster if it turned into one of those shows that took itself too seriously.

Okay, that was better than aw3some. A damn good story in of itself, not just a "let's have a Dalek" episode (which to be fair to RTD I never thought it would be). Part of it I expected, and indeed welcomed, as it seems to confirm my suspicions of where the season is going to end up. Heck, I even felt sympathetic for the Dalek in question, though that's no good indicator of anything - I often manage to find sympathy for even the most hard-hearted of bastards. And, despite this being a serious episode, there was still time for a few referential in-jokes about the Daleks, though perhaps the stairs scene was overplayed just a bit. RTD has done a superb job so far, but sometimes it has strayed a little far into ridiculousness. Despite that though, I see good things in DW's future, and I actually find myself looking forward in a way to Eccleston's departure, because I know it's going to be magnificent.

Just saw "Dalek" and was hugely entertained, from the moment when they showed a Cyberman helmet and instead of it just being a fanwank the Doctor had an emotional reaction and said something interesting. Totally awesome start to finish, and the by far the best realizion of a Dalek ever (the suckers finally work the way they were supposed to in 1964!). I'm looking forward to the end of the season too.

Look them up. Really. Now. Wikipedia, google, the lot. If you have time, write your own description for yourself.

Bad Wolf- OMG, RTD actually wrote something which impressed me. This one even managed to scare me vaguely, in a way that I haven't been in a loooong time, and certainly not by RTD, lol..........Not complex, and once again, RTD displays a complete inability, IMAO, to handle suspense properly........but nonetheless this was good.....or better.......the D***** were as sc****** as ever, and came across well (edited to avoid spoilers)

Having said that, nxt week looks....interesting......, but the trailer of the TARDIS in space........ho-hum......

I am really looking forward to the finale -- and yet, then what am I going to do? No Doctor Who until the "Christmas Special." And then more waiting for Season 2. We need 24/7 Doctor Who. Or pretty much anything from the US, actually. Lost doesn't arrive here until August (and it's already showing on the continent in places, not to mention as far off as Singapore), and we're only now going to get to see Wonderfalls at the beginning of next month. Of course, the problem then is that it's almost always that bastard Murdoch (or more accurately Sky) that snap up the broadcast rights, which means if you don't have cable or digital or whatever you've got to wait even longer before it appears on terrestrial.

Yeah, but most American TV is crap, so 9 times out of 10 you're missing nothing. And a lot of times great American stuff gets lost or ignored over here, like "Firefly." Meanwhile, it's painfully easy to catch stupid reality shows like "The Real Gilligan's Island"...

But I'm glad you mentioned it. Chatting with Nic Corelli I knew that he was way behind us on "Smallville," but I didn't realize we were doing such a poor job of exporting what good TV we have.

Meanwhile I just discovered the original "Coupling," believe it or not. I've seen three episodes and died laughing, and now I have to figure out how to get that, too.

I feel like a transsexual, but instead of being a woman in a man's body I'm a Brit in a Yank's body.

I never really liked Coupling myself, but I've heard it's far superior to the US remake, as is usually the case with such remakes (although the US version of The Office is apparently pretty good). You do have a point of course Scooter, in that most of the crap tends to get filtered out by the time it gets across to our side of the Pond, but it's still annoying to have to wait six months or a year to see just what it is that everyone is raving on about (with the very rare exception like BSG, of course). I suppose it can goe both ways though of course - none of the US networks as far as I know have yet decided they want to pick up Who. You could always move to Canada of course; I hear they've got plenty of spare room. ;)

What's funny about all this is that I did manage to see "Bad Wolf," and I was only able to appreciate the jokes because all of the game shows featured in the episode did come over here in American versions. I was a big fan of the American "Weakest Link" while it was on (Me shouting at the set: "Bank! Bank, you idiot!"), before of course they ruined it by doing too many all-celeb episodes. But thanks to American importing I was able to recognize the "Weakest Link" set, Anne Robinson's hair, and so on just as quickly as a Brit. So I was a very, very happy Yank.

And how many people have had exactly that feeling--that Anne was two seconds away from vaporizing you! Hilarious.
