Taking what existed and upping the resolution without betraying continuity, there's nothing wrong with that. I'm even a bit more forgiving of the DSC Enterprise design. There's a difference between the defeatist attitude of "it'll never work, we have to change everything" and the optimistic attitude of "what can we do with these restrictions?" The whole thing reminds me of how the DC movies are being made by people who are ashamed of the comic books and the Marvel movies are being made by people who want to embrace the comic books. The mindset is important, and the current Trek creators seem to be ashamed of Star Trek, and that can only lead to disaster.
