This thing will take a word and show you another word it might look like from the side if the letters were constructed in a certain.

My name works out to Shame, and "Saar" turns into anal. I think this thing has it in for me.

For all that he runs a "radical journal", I gotta hand it to this Withiel guy. If <s>Samuel Marchbanks</s> Robertson Davies were still alive, these are the kind of complaint letters (http://www.zen20775.zen.co.uk/letters.html) he'd write.

Maybe this is dangerous, and maybe you've already heard of it, but I present... Dwarf Fortress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_Fortress), quite possibly the most complexly thought out game ever created. The graphics are basic, to say the least (though if ASCII doesn't take your fancy there are fan created tilesets available) and the learning curve is atrocious... but if you can get to the end of Wikipedia's article without at least feeling intrigued then you are no true nerd.

Uh, is there an electrical guy out there that can explain this one to me?

NAHTMMM
04-28-2009, 02:03 AM
Heheh.

It's not electrical so much as perceptual. ;) When an atom changes charge, it's usually because it loses or gains electrons. Protons tend to just sit around in the nucleus.

When an atom has one more electron than it has protons, it has a negative charge . . . but it presumably got that way by means of an electron being added to it . . . but that means its charge dropped from zero to -1 . . .

People are not used to associating "negative" or a "decrease" with "addition". ;) But they didn't know about electrons and protons back in Franklin's day, of course, and so he called one positive and the other negative without any knowledge of what was really going on. As it happens, he guessed "wrong".

[edit]I think that some engineers -- electrical engineers? engineers in the armed forces? -- use the opposite convention, calling electrons positive and protons negative. This means that their currents flow opposite to everyone else's currents! :p But then, they use J to signify a current in an equation, whereas everyone else uses I. So they're just kinda weird like that. :)

Bunny's a fun comic. The size of the archives is intimidating, but since it's a gag panel comic, you don't really have to read them all (unless you're some sort of near-neurotic completist... cough).

ShadowBent (http://www.shadowbent.com/) is an interesting sketch blog. I found it today while looking up a Ray Bradbury story (as I've noted before, he's probably my all-time favourite sf writer). Brian, the blogger, has done a sketch for each story in Bradbury's classic The Illustrated Man. His style is very much like that of Joe Mugnaini, a friend of Bradbury's who did the official illustrations for some of his books. If you've read the stories, the comment threads are worth checking out too.

And another thing: Kriegsaffe No. 9's reflections on doors (http://kriegsaffeno9.deviantart.com/art/Enter-the-Scary-Door-20193363). (K#9 is a guy I became familiar with through his extremely bizarre Azumanga Daioh fanworks. He's into Cthulhu and whatnot.)

This is ludicrous. A guy claims that in order to beat the Running Man in OOT, you need to do the following:

1. Challenge the guy as Adult Link.
2. Go back in time and go to the finish line.
3. Wait seven years of game time, which is supposedly a week in real-life (based on the rate at which the sun rises and sets, presumably).
4. Young Link will suddenly be replaced by Adult Link and the guy will appear and concede defeat.

Ludicrous. I distinctly remember reading that someone did a full dump of all of the game text, and that there was no message in there to allow for a victory. Besides, I'm pretty sure any and all events in OOT operate on a trigger, and unless there's a physical timer on the screen time means diddly squat. The trigger is set off by one of your actions, usually a conversation or beating a dungeon. Furthermore, you can't beat the running man if the race timer leaves the screen; and going back in time automatically overrides all such timers.

NAHTMMM

iPad specs.

Comments:

They really should've put in a smaller screen and a physical keyboard. With a screen this big you're going to want to actually type instead of just tapping out short memos.

Six versions? Really? Are there that many people who want to pay the extra money for 3G access? If I wanted to pay every month for faster Internet in something like this, I'd get an iPhone!

No Flash? Still? I mean, come on! Any computer with a screen larger than a phone should be able to access every single website that exists! I'd willingly pay an extra ten bucks for the licensing for these things, doesn't Apple know that? And have they even tried to negotiate for a discounted bulk rate for software like this?

(Note: one of the comments indicates that the lack of Flash forces you to use the App Store to download all programs. I call that laziness on the part of Apple. There must be other ways to force us to use the App Store and keep away the unauthorized developers).

For several years now I've been following the fan-made King's Quest game The Silver Lining. Vivendi (Sierra) had already given them a fan license, but then Activision bought them out. The creators (Phoenix Online Studios) have finished the first episode, but now they've been told to Cease and Desist. NOW, when there's a complete game in existence. And this isn't a cheapy flash game or ROM hack, this is a real game. A game with full 3D models and voice acting that's been in development for the better part of a decade.

The gang at Phoenix have worked on this with their own money, never once expecting to make a SINGLE penny off of it, and now it's all down the drain. What is the freaking point?

Furthermore, why can't Activision honor the license that Vivendi already gave these guys?

Apparently some people have had a problem reconciling the Trek film odd/even rule with the "bad" Trek 10 and the "good" Trek 11. Their solution is to treat Galaxy Quest as the "true, good" Trek 10 with Nemesis as the "bad" Trek 11 and Trek 2009 as the "good" Trek 12.

Of course this is fanwank at its best, but I still want to hear opinions.

I've long been interested in the United Earth Space Probe Agency, or UESPA, the organization only mentioned a few times in TOS before the concept of Starfleet was finalized. This page has an interesting hypothesis, that the presence of army-based ranks like Colonel in a naval-based Starfleet may be attributed to a combined service of UESPA and Starfleet officers.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I'm looking forward to watching some of those episodes again.

I'm also not sure if you can watch the episodes outside of the US. After all, the BBC didn't allow <i>me</i> to stream Doctor Who. Not that I'm bitter or anything... :)

A dance center sign: Come visit our "state of the art" facility...

PNQ: How can a dance center be state of the art anyway? It's just a few kinds of flooring, some handrails, and proper lighting, right?

A sign: "Wet." "Paint."

PNQ: So it may or may not be wet, and it may or may not be paint?

And so on...

Wow. That's a good voice.

It's interesting thinking about Back to the Future with regards to video games. It doesn't seem like an old movie, but it was released in 1985, shortly prior to the US debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System. That the NES seems archaic by today's standards probably just shows how far video game technology has advanced in the past 25 years, but it gives an interesting sense of perspective. No doubt the new game will be much more advanced than the early 8-bit adaptations of the films.

In any case, I'm looking forward to learning more about this project.

The Shepherd, by Hermas (http://www.gnosis.org/library/hermas.htm):
The Shepherd of Hermas (Greek: Ποιμήν του Ερμά; Hebrew: רועה הרמס‎; sometimes just called The Shepherd) is a Christian literary work of the second century, considered a valuable book by many Christians, and considered canonical scripture by some of the early Church fathers such as Irenaeus. The Shepherd had great authority in the second and third centuries. Along with the Apocrypha, it was bound with in the Codex Sinaiticus, and it was listed between the Acts of the Apostles and the Acts of Paul in the stichometrical list of the Codex Claromontanus. Although Early Christians afforded the work high respect, they did not consider the work to be on a par with those considered "divine" but rather apocryphal.

XKCD did a breakdown of what all of the gifts mentioned in the song "If I had $1000000" would cost. If you don't want to zoom among the picture I'll just list the relevant figures:

Furniture: $21,160
Plymouth Reliant: $3,000
Tree Fort: $15,000
Llama: $2,120
Joseph Merrick's Remains: Unavailable.
House: $224, 820
Tiny Fridge: $99.08
Gourmet Pre-Wrapped Sausages: $34.48
Kraft Dinner: $3.06
Expensive Ketchup: $10.75
Faux Fur Coat: $198.00
Limo Ride to Store: $186.59

They claim all of this would be $263,330

Um, not all items are listed. Mentioned in the song but not priced are:

Joseph Merrick's Remains: Sure, you can't BUY them, but with a million dollars I'm sure you could arrange a theft. This guy is trying to impress his girlfriend, right?
Limo: Um, I'm sure the singer wasn't thinking of "a" limo ride to the store (listed above), but actually purchasing and maintaining a limousine. And the services of a chauffeur, too.
Green (but not REAL green) dress: Probably skipped because "dress" is such a vague term. What size? What brand? How fancy of a dress?
Picasso or Garfunkel Painting: Seriously, I refuse to believe that every single painting made by these two is unavailable for purchase.
Monkey: If pet llamas are available, why not monkeys?

http://www.tribecafilm.com/tribecaonline/future-of-film/Movie-Theaters-Should-Think-Like-Netflix.html

An interesting idea to make going to movie theaters more profitable for the theater, the studio, AND the moviegoer.

Basically, you choose two theaters (he presents the scenario of a mainstream theater and an indie theater) and pay a monthly fee to be able to go to the movies whenever you want. You still have to ask for a ticket, which are first-come-first-serve, but you don't have to pay for it. And if you don't go to the movies the theater still makes money. Depending on which movie you go to a portion of your fee will go to the studio that made that movie.

Furthermore, this membership will allow more targeted advertising opportunities.

PNQ: Opinions?

NAHTMMM
01-16-2012, 02:27 PM
I just don't expect the monthly fee would be low enough to be worthwhile for most people. I'm no expert on economics, but Netflix and individual movie theaters seem like two different business models. $8 for all the $15 movie tickets you want seems like a horrible deal for the theater. A bookstore model might be more feasible: You pay to have membership at the theater, and then either get bonuses for spending lots of money at the theater or get reduced ticket prices. (It wouldn't surprise me if there were already theaters doing this.)

Star Wars Uncut (http://vimeo.com/34948855)

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake “Star Wars: A New Hope” into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

It's amusing to see the different approaches taken. Stop-motion, Legos, drawings, 3D models, live-action with grown-ups or children (pets were promised but I didn't see any in the first few minutes), all performed with varying degrees of believability and accuracy. The 15-second format seems ridiculous, but it works out pretty well. If you don't like one approach, you can just wait a few seconds and it will be gone. If you do find a certain approach appealing, you can stop to imagine the rest of the movie in that style as best you can, without being spoiled by the tedium of two hours of imperfect execution. (I liked the scribbly effect of the scene where the escape pod blasts free, but it probably wouldn't work well for the whole movie.)

I've just discovered the joy of the "literal music video", so here's one of "The Rainbow Connection." For those of you who don't know (like me an hour ago), a literal music video is what happens when someone takes a real music video and rewrites the lyrics to reflect what's actually happening on screen. It often turns out hilariously.

There are tons more, some of which you can find on the TV Tropes page:

Probably fewer books and more action figures. ;)

Clarence Nash (voice of Donald Duck) on the show "What's My Line." It's hilarious how far from the mark the judges got, as they have no idea who Clarence Nash is.

The front page of Australian eBay! (http://www.ebay.com.au/)

The reason I got to this page is a long story, but I just had to share this. Right at the top it says "G'day!" My fancy was tickled, as they say.

I decided to check some other country-specific eBay front pages. Most are just translations of "hello" or "welcome", which means Australia is special.

Beating Mario 1 with only 500 points. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kvT0dywaF8)

I've seen speedruns for minimal time. I've seen speedruns with minimal equipment. But minimal points is something new. Minimal points in Mario 1 means no coins, no powerups, no killing, and hitting the flagpole with only a second left on the clock every time.

If you're not aware of Neil Degrasse Tyson, he's been so many things that I may as well just refer you to his Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson).

But one thing I love him for is his love for the design of the original Enterprise (http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyUN5vG1T8k). Quoth Neil: "[The NCC-1701] is the most astonishing, awesome, beautiful, seductive... (the applause of the crowd muddles the rest of the line)."

The Return of Ganondorf (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/105053). (Also available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSmhWrrLqcU) if you don't like Newgrounds, but you won't get to squeeze a stuffed animal or get a secret video!)

One of my earliest online video memories, from way back in the dial-up dark ages. As a serious Ocarina of Time freak I would've loved this fan animation as is, but the humor and timing to be found just makes it a classic.

The origin of X-Men: Death Becomes Them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-pm6rjCsy0)

Ten years ago, on Newgrounds, the first major Floating Hands production was launched. Yes, Newgrounds.

Anyway, the two main Floating Hands guys take the opportunity to discuss the creation of the video, including the time and technical constraints.

I was either still in college or just graduated when I stumbled upon this video (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/218160)on Newgrounds (later pirated onto Youtube here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdv3g5P4EYI) in low quality, then properly by the original Floating Hands team here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL6J7FJmy1c)).

I know I've shilled Floating Hands before, most likely at least twice in this thread already. But this tenth anniversary discussion provided me another excuse.

Incidentally they apologize for the horrid Canadian accent of Wolverine, but proceed to argue Rule Of Funny (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfFunny) (is it time to shill for TV Tropes again? I guess so!)

X-Men: Death Becomes Them (Fixed Edition) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=316YUno-GmU)

We all know that YouTube's automatically generated subtitles aren't the best, so the Floating Hands guys redubbed the video using YouTube's version instead of their own. It just points out how inaccurate and pointless YouTube's transcription program is.

The Laughing Vulcan and His Dog (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBg9T_3CI1A)

You probably don't remember a throwaway line from the TNG episode "Disaster" where the schoolchildren suggest singing the song "The Laughing Vulcan and His Dog", but Picard's never heard of it. Well, a fan wrote and sang such a song.

Incidentally, the creators have said that this song's title isn't a reference to Sybok. Personally, I doubt it. Just look at this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N7c5nf1c50&t=3m47s) and tell me that's not a laughing Vulcan and his dog.

I don't think I've shilled for Matthias Wandel's woodworking channel yet. He has lots of good stuff, but today he invented a cake knife (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=801NU7CkEQM) to cut hexagonal-shaped pieces of cake.

Among other projects he's also invented a set of continuous stairs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dinVcBEDhQ) for a Slinky to go down and some rather clever wooden tarp clips (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLxFCulKoRk). I just cherry-picked a couple videos for you to get started with, you can continue on your own.

It's things like this that make you realize all over again that you don't need to leave the planet to find the truly bizarre, it's all around us every day.

P.S. He does a respectable job with all the Muppet voices, especially considering that adding singing to impersonation isn't doubling the effort, it's adding at least another order of magnitude.

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4psTeRpQ-1o)

Paul Lynde was famous before our time and probably many of you would only recognize his voice as Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web. However, as a connoisseur of older movies I know of him from the original Bye Bye Birdie movie amongst other places (including some classic quips on Hollywood Squares). This special from 1976 just has to be seen to be believed. Where else but a 70s variety show are you going to find Tim Conway, Florence Henderson, KISS, Margaret Hamilton as the Wicket Witch of the West, Bette White, and Donnie and Marie Osmond?

I'll bet you didn't know that "I Hate You" from The Voyage Home was a real song.

Well, it is. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX8kKEh8DGU)

At least, it's longer than the clip used in the movie. Incidentally, it was recorded by ultraobscure (as in, the band was a bunch of people from the sound department working on Star Trek IV, and they only recorded this one song) band Edge of Etiquette and the punk on the bus was played by associate producer Kirk Thatcher, who also wrote the lyrics.

Controlling Mario 1 with a theramin. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnZeI8uLJnw)

If you don't know what a theramin is, just knowing that it's a stringed musical instrument should be enough to know how hard it'd be to use as a controller.

Zeke
12-23-2015, 05:47 AM
Er... are you sure you know what a theremin is, Nate? Much like Ultron, there are no strings on it. (It's also like Ultron in being completely electronic.)

That was neat. There are quite a few interesting spins on Mario 1 to be found on YouTube; here are two of my favourites.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBb9wFP7uZM">First Person Mario</a>. Somebody went to a lot of trouble recreating Stage 1-1 as an FPS, complete with achievements. This is just the tip of the iceberg -- there's a playable version out there too, and same goes for the first two Zeldas. There's even 8-Bit Deathmatch, a popular Doom/Quake clone based on the classic Mega Man series.

<p>Some people play Mario fast. Some play slow. Some can't control the stupid moron plumber and get killed all the time. (Ahem.) Wanna see all that at once? Here's what it looks like (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTiJaWCaKas) when nearly a thousand people's playthroughs of the same Mario level are superimposed! (It looks like a custom Mario 1 stage, though the video is set to the relaxing music of Mario 2.)
By the way, I think I'll rename this the "Link Thread", since the "dump" part is a reference (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_of_tubes) that's pretty dated now. Any objections?
