That said, the title is sort of self-fulfilling. Apparently that avatar did make me stupider.

A site recommends "Darmok" as the first episode to watch for a person who has never seen Star Trek before in their lives. (https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/wiki/kraetosintrototrek)

Yeah, um, what?

I was going to stick this in the quintessential episode thread, but I didn't want to be mocked for necroposting, and the connection was tangential anyway.

I appreciate what Darmok attempted, the problem is that it raised too many questions about how the Universal Translator was ever supposed to work. If anything, "instant" translation should be extremely crude and mechanical. Let the eggheads over at the Daystrom Institute talk with representatives of each race to get the grammatical rules straightened out and perfected. But no, the UT works perfectly with everything including proper nouns instantaneously, except for this episode when it hiccups all over the place.

Now, just to convince you that I still like the episode, here's the Gilgamesh clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoM_kPGfkw0).

There it is again, the desire for the blinking "that's random" emoticon.

I looked for quotes about weirdness, here are some.

Source One: (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/weirdness)

Dick Francis: Some are born weird, some achieve it, others have weirdness thrust upon them.
E.A. Buccianeri: Weirdism is definitely the cornerstone of many an artists's career.
Alain de Bottom: There's a whole category of people who miss out by not allowing themselves to be weird enough.
Dr. Seuss: We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love. (another source claimed that a similar quote is from Robert Fulghum, I'm not sure who's right)

Source Two (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/weird.html):

Sebastian Stan: Embrace your differences and the qualities about you that you think are weird. Eventually, they're going to be the only things separating you from everyone else.

Source Three (http://www.wiseoldsayings.com/being-weird-quotes/):

Jacob Nordby: Blessed are the weird people: poets, misfits, writers, mystics, painters, and troubadours, for they teach us to see the world through different eyes.
Tom Robbins: There is no such thing as a weird human being, it's just that some people require more understanding than others.

This could easily go in the Amazing Things thread too:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/54rjpj/im_colin_cantwell_designer_of_the_death_star/

This guy designed most of the ships in A New Hope, he worked on Close Encounters and War Games and 2001, he helped Walter Conkrite broadcast the Apollo 11 landing, he designed the first proper color monitor -- just read the thread. Amazing Thing: The Death Star trench run was basically an accident. The model for the Death Star developed a depression, and rather than spend a lot of time patching it up, Cantwell convinced Lucas it should have a trench.

Nate the Great
09-28-2016, 09:54 PM
Source Five (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/weirdness):

Mandy Hale: So you're a little weird? Work it! A little different? OWN it! Better to be a nerd than one of the herd!
Donna Lynn Hope: I like weird. Conformity bores but is inescapable for the most part. We all follow something, even if it is following the goal of wanting to stand apart. We are a sea of ordinary people; it is always the quirk, the flaw or the ingenuity that stands out.

It's Newgrounds Day in the Link Thread!

I'm in the middle of an Ashens marathon, and I was reminded of what web video was like over ten years ago, so let's do a Newgrounds Day!

I won't link to things like The Return of Ganondorf or the Floating Hands toons again, I've already done those too many times.

You all know about the Ultimate Showdown, but what about another video by Albino Blacksheep, Geeks in Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbDV1afDSn0)?

The sheer number of references boggle the mind. Can you find Doc Brown and Clara, the Spock snowman, the Monty Python foot, the All Your Base guy, the Teal'c cosplay, Potter Puppet Pal Dumbledore, or the Lemmings?

Pretty Much Ocarina of Time (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/239123). A different style of abridgement than a fiver.

Magical Trevor (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/181469). I forget if I saw this one on Newgrounds or YouTube first.

Super Mario Crossover (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/534416). This is the original one, the one that I played the most.

One of many Rabbit Joint Zelda song videos (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/477421). It's not even the best one possible, but I was in a hurry and the song is the most important part. Just like Magical Trevor, the Ultimate Showdown, Badger, etc. this song deserves it's place in early Net history.

A beautiful, basic piano cover. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9sUyvFNbhM)
A full orchestra plays it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGXnkFrhpR8). The arrangement here is very similar if not identical to that used for the 40th Anniversary tribute.
Picard and Nella perform it as a duet in the Jeffries Tube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4y_oWBiwAo).
A theramin cover (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XQN9XDnRm4). A bit more otherworldly, this one.
Mario Paint cover (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6czGs0VBpU).

This guy's voice is a little flat (too much autotune?), but if it's good enough for the Dr. Demento Show, you gotta give him mad props, I guess.

I just made my periodic pilgrimage to Old Man Murray's Start to Crate (http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.html) pages (which apparently I haven't shilled for in this forum yet). This gave me an idea for another theme day.

Early Internet Day!

By "early Internet", I mean the early 2000s, the days when audio-visual components are sparse or nonexistent, when pages were strictly text and images. Ah, the joys of dialup. I'm not including any video sites since I did a Newgrounds roundup recently and that seems to have it covered.

As If! (http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/darkgatomon/AsIf.html) Before Yu-gi-oh The Abridged Series existed, there was DarkGatomon writing MST's of Yu-gi-oh episodes. She was one of my earliest net friends, along with you guys and the gang over at the original h2g2.com

The Book of Ratings (http://web.archive.org/web/20080212045334/http://bookofratings.com/archive.html). This one's so old the actual page doesn't exist anymore and I had to bookmark the Wayback Machine version. It's just a bunch of funny lists in the Cracked or Seanbaby genre.

Computer Stupidities (http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/). Yeah, I shilled for this one in this very thread back in 2008, but eight years must be enough for statues of limitations to expire. It's still funny and I encourage a rummaging around of the rest of Rinkworks as well.

All Too Flat (http://www.alltooflat.com/). I could've sworn I've mentioned this site in the forum before, but the search function is coming up empty. Odd. Anyway, back in the day a bunch of New York college kids collected a bunch of funny stuff and engaged in various pranks. Among my favorite entries are locking a stuffed lion (http://www.alltooflat.com/pranks/lion/) in an empty gym speaker cage, turning New York's Astor Cube sculpture into the world's largest Rubik's Cube (http://www.alltooflat.com/pranks/cube/), and labeling everything in an apartment (http://www.alltooflat.com/pranks/postits/)with Post-It Notes.

The Voyager Coronary (http://www.st-minutiae.com/humor/coronary/index.html). If you want straight-up bonkers Trek fanfiction where anything and everything can happen, people from any Trek series can show up, and every Trek trope will be skewered, look no further.

Delta Blues (http://reviewboy.com/). No elaboration necessary. Jim always deserves a mention whenever a related subject is mentioned. I just wish he would take the time to do the last few Voyager Season 7 episodes.

The Cynic's Corner (http://www.cynicscorner.org/). If Jim plays "good cop" for Voyager episodes, David E. Sluss plays "bad cop". If he didn't have such good arguments, he'd be annoying. But he always has a point and defends his opinions, so you can't hate him. He also covers a bit of Enterprise, DS9, and Andromeda.

Fun, thanks! :)

Then my mind goes to the excellent soundtrack on the 1995 PC game by Westwood. Ah yes, those dark times before widespread adoption of the Internet when you had to play games on CD-ROM.
Good soundtrack, fun background images, fun little animations on that game. :)

That first Robie looks familiar, though we never had one. My brother did get a black-and-yellow piggy bank robot for Christmas though. And I had a couple of Tiger handhelds (baseball and a frustrating football) and an Empire Strikes Back that was probably Tiger too.

A redditer gives his list of the 20 essential Trek episodes: (https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/6ag62n/i_made_a_list_of_essential_episodes_i_tried_to/#bottom-comments)

ENT: In A Mirror, Darkly, Dear Doctor, Carbon Creek
TOS: City on the Edge of Forever, Balance of Terror, Space Seed, Mirror Mirror, The Trouble With Tribbles
TNG: Q Who, The Best of Both Worlds, The Defector, Yesterday's Enterprise, The Inner Light, Tapestry, Preemptive Strike
DS9: Duet, The Visitor, In the Pale Moonlight
VOY: Scorpion

Commenters put forth missing episodes like Far Beyond the Stars, Cause and Effect, Year of Hell, Drumhead, Measure of a Man, etc.

I'm going to omit my commentary for now, but what do you guys think? Do some of these fit more in the category of "popular" or "got a lot of exposure" than "essential"?

Almost two years ago (http://www.fiveminute.net/forums/showpost.php?p=80318&postcount=736) I shilled for Matthias Wandel's woodworking channel.
(and almost five years ago (http://www.fiveminute.net/forums/showpost.php?p=79010&postcount=672) I posted his domino row building machine without mentioning his name)

Well, he recently hit a million subscribers, so I'm going to link to a few more of his videos to celebrate.

Someone compiled the different versions of the Sailor Moon title song. Granted, the ones from the actual show are the same song over different video clips, but I didn't know that the video game had a version with primitive CG models of the Scouts dancing while the song plays. I've linked to that part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc6PBoy3vzU&t=3m2s), it reminds me of the Haruhi dance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9yyX1bb3lw).

And just in case you'd forgotten the Haruhi dance, I'm also going to link to the animated (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3dOmMMNjGA) and live-action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mfmf1QPm9k) versions of the Lucky Star dance. Bwa-ha-ha!

I'll admit that in the ranking of Bond actors he's below Connery and Brosnan (whatever Craig's positive points, he's playing some guy called James Bond without actually being James Bond), but I still liked him. I haven't seen The Saint yet, but my parents liked him in that role as well.

Perhaps some of you will remember when there was a site about ten years ago called Smash Our Stuff (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smash_Our_Stuff) (originally Smash My iPod), who would buy a brand new Apple device on release day and then destroy it in front of the line of people who are still waiting to buy one. They did this for a few different models of iPod and the original iPhone. The site doesn't exist anymore, but last Wednesday a different group took it to the next level.

They attached a Nintendo Switch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8QCFNAgPDo) to a drone, flew it up to a thousand feet, and then dropped it. And the thing (at least the main console and one of the Joycons) worked afterward!

There is an online meme called Nintendium (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/nintendium) that comes to mind. Remember that Gameboy that went through the Gulf War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBeTXPaewMo) and still works?

It had to happen...

The recent fidget spinner craze has inspired someone to make one out of gallium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1s0yts5bgk)...

The shame is that he had to melt down his gallium LEGO minifigs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKCKv6OmS0Q) to do it...

If you didn't know already, gallium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallium) is a metal that has a melting point of 86 degF/30 degC. Your body heat can melt it if you hold it long enough. And unlike that other "liquid at room temperature" metal, mercury, it's nontoxic. I first heard about it from an Isaac Asimov science article twenty years ago.

PS: Your totally useless, random gallium fact of the day is...
While the official source of the name "gallium" is "Gaul", the old Celtic name for what is now France and some surrounding areas (the discoverer Paul Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran is French), some believe that it also refers to Lecoq himself (Le coq=>French for "the rooster"=>gallus is Latin for "rooster").

Popeye characters cast as TNG characters. (http://l00u.deviantart.com/art/Star-Trek-TNG-Popeye-Bluto-Wimpy-Olive-Oyl-688823720)

Discovery characters drawn in manga/webcomic style.

How Christopher Pike would look wearing a Discovery-style uniform. (http://jonbromle1.deviantart.com/art/Star-Trek-Discovery-Captain-Christopher-Pike-688292505)

Painting of TNG Characters (http://nickybarkla.deviantart.com/art/Star-Trek-50th-Anniversary-687566669)(I wonder why Pulaski is there but Guinan, O'Brien and Ro weren't)

Gosalyn from Darkwing Duck in a TOS uniform and carrying a Type 2 phaser. (http://jialgri.deviantart.com/art/Where-no-duck-has-gone-before-Gosalyn-686777388)

Anyone remember the Vulcan Healer from "Yesteryear" (http://nightwing1975.deviantart.com/art/vulcan-healer-685734040)?

Hayley Atwell wearing a Monster Maroon. (http://gazomg.deviantart.com/art/Hayley-Atwell-Star-Trek-685148032)

Dusty Abell (I've posted his TOS fanart before) has created two new images for the 30th anniversary of TNG: Good Guys (http://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Next-Generation-30th-Anniv-27x40-print-FOR-SALE-689414789) and Bad Guys (http://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Next-Generation-30th-Anniv-27x40-print-FOR-SALE-689415587).

I tested myself, and I think I could name about 75% of the characters, and could at least name the episode for about 90% of them.

Notes (Good Guys): Who's that Romulan between Sarek and the Roshenkos? It doesn't really look like Tomalak or Pardek. Why is Q2 here in the "Good Guys" print? What's the ship between Shuttle 2 and Junior? Is that the criminal ship from "Gambit"?

Notes (Bad Guys): Does Texas really count as a villain? Ditto for the T'Kon Portal. The renditions of Lursa and B'Etor could've been better.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, don't remake things unless you can improve them or put a new spin (not just adding comic relief characters in the background) on it. Being lazy and expecting to make a profit from it is wrong and should never be encouraged in any artistic field.

Do I feel that any insertion of pop culture figures into preexisting stories is wrong? Of course not! It just has to be done properly. The first step is actually having the pop culture figures play roles in the story, as opposed to just fooling around next to the story.

So DisneyXD posted the pilot episode of the new DuckTales on their YouTube channel... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP0Neif7Y4E)

Don't worry, it's good. Unlike some other misguided revivals of recent memory *cough, cough Teen Titans Go, Powerpuff Girls 2016, Xiaolin Chronicles, cough cough* this one is being run by people who actually care about quality.

It does rush through things a little too fast. They accomplish in two episodes what I think could've easily been extended to five if they wanted to include more substantial character and plot development.

I must admit to wishing that the posted family tree was just a little more involved. Of course the full Don Rosa-made family tree (http://scrooge-mcduck.wikia.com/wiki/Don_Rosa%27s_Duck_Family_Tree)wouldn't have fit, but a few more names would've been nice.

My only real nit is that Donald didn't know that Flintheart Glomgold was an enemy of Scrooge's. Didn't Donald tag along on a bunch of adventures in the past? Even if he'd never met the guy personally, wouldn't Scrooge have mentioned his name before now?

The Daily Dot's list of nine Klingon episodes to watch before Discovery (https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/klingon-star-trek-netflix/)

TOS: Errand of Mercy, The Undiscovered Country
TNG: Heart of Glory, Sins of the Father, The Emissary, Reunion
DS9: The Way of the Warrior, The Sword of Kahless, Once More Unto the Breach
VOY: Barge of the Dead

My reaction? Ditch Heart of Glory, Sword of Kahless, and Barge of the Dead and substitute Redemption and Birthright. How about you guys?

ENT: "Affliction" and "Divergence" is something that I would want to show, along with "Judgment". Probably the latter more than the other two, as it talks about how the warrior ethos has take over Klingon society and shows how the Klingons view outsiders from their perspective.

"Heart of Glory" should be included, as it was actually a more in-depth intro to anything Klingon psychologically. Everything afterwards just refines this knowledge. Agreed on the other two, though "Barge of the Dead" can be valuable due to the fact that it is Gre'thor and the Klingon value of afterlife they discuss at length...

The list of essential Klingon episodes made me ask a similar question about Romulan episodes.

A discussion on Quorra (https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-best-Romulan-episodes-of-Star-Trek)yields Balance of Terror, the Defector, In the Pale Moonlight, The Enterprise Incident, Unification, Face of the Enemy, Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges, and The Enemy

I disagree with In The Pale Moonlight, it's not really a "Romulan episode", just an episode that has Romulans in it.

A reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/1m77lb/what_are_your_go_to_romulan_episodes/) yields:

TOS: Balance of Terror, The Enterprise Incident
TNG: The Defector, Unification
DS9: In The Pale Moonlight, Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges (again, the Romulan culture was completely incidental in these two episodes, DS9 really didn't use the Romulans as anything other than plot devices)
VOY: Message in a Bottle (it could've been any antagonistic TNG race, the Romulans were plot devices again)

As a side not-quite-PNQ: Can you think of another way the Romulans could've been used besides as generic antagonists or "evil Vulcans"?

http://www.the-record-collector.com/Picture_Discs.htm
http://www.colourlovers.com/craft/blog/2010/03/30/unusually-colored-vinyl-records

"Picture discs" are vinyl records that feature images on the area where the music is recorded. Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture_disc) mentions:
One picture disc was even billed as a genuine "live album." Made as a demonstration for Stevie Wonder's Journey through the Secret Life of Plants, it featured a layer of blotting paper between the clear vinyl layers that contained alfalfa seeds. A tag of the blotting paper protruded below the record, and resting the disc on a glass of water with the paper in the water allowed the seeds to germinate and grow inside the record. When the prototype was taken through customs in Canada it was seized by the Department of Agriculture, making it not only the only real live album but the only record ever banned by the Department of Agriculture (alfalfa being a prohibited import).
Which is uncited, or I would have put this in the Amazing Things thread.

There's a new Herbie the Love Bug series in the works for Disney XD. (https://tvline.com/2017/06/28/herbie-series-disney-xd-love-bug-reboot/)

This worries me.

Lili/Landon is “part scientist, part entrepreneur, part daredevil” and realizes, when her/his parents go missing, that they’ve secretly been working on a government project: a talking car named Herbie.

That had better be a typo. Herbie does not talk except via car horn.

"A talking Herbie? Did these people accidentally get confused and watch a bunch of old Knight Rider episodes?" (http://jalopnik.com/disney-is-about-to-ruin-herbie-the-love-bug-if-we-dont-1796526380)

It doesn’t really matter why Herbie seems to be self-aware and capable of so much more. Any attempt to fill in some complex, logical backstory is doomed. Did the addition of microscopic midi-chlorians (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Midi-chlorian) somehow make Star Wars better?

It's only been a few weeks since my last David Erick Ramos plug, but when he celebrates the 30th anniversary of TNG by covering the Inner Light theme on ocarina and guitar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GnDfYly9Z8), I feel that an exception is warranted.

I haven't plugged Acts of Gord (http://www.actsofgord.com/index.php) since 2012, but when he's referenced in the comments to a Not Always Right story (https://notalwaysright.com/that-was-the-wrong-answer-2/92514/), I felt that it was time.

The story concerns a trucker who entered a BBQ restaurant, asked if they serve food, and leaves upon getting the affirmative. A similar scenario happened in Gord's shop, and he made a quote that was remembered by quite a few Not Always Right readers.

Today's discovery is cakewrecks.com (http://www.cakewrecks.com/)

Sometimes professional cake decorators mess up. Badly. This blog has photos of the disasters, but also some spectacular cakes and, my favorite kind, the photo of what the customer wanted compared with a photo of what they got.

I'll admit that I didn't have an AIM account (I think...), but this still hurts. What I did use back in the day was mIRC. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIRC)

Ah, the days of dial-up. Before YouTube. Before Facebook. Back when my websurfing consisted of e-mail, the old h2g2.com, Delta Blues, and Newgrounds. And the occasional site for college, of course.

Anyway, does anyone have any interesting AIM memories to share?

I already posted the Redshirt Tribute Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3cL1Aofy90&list=PL3A40A96F46174EA9&index=36) awhile back, but I had to do it again to relate some comments:

Crusader Nikolai: A redshirt and a stormtrooper get into a fight, the stormtrooper misses every shot and the redshirt dies anyway.
Martin Baxter: And we have a winner!
Dennis Vance: Second the motion.

The father is watching the scene from "Obsession" where there are dead redshirts all over the place:
Son: Are those guys dead?
Father: Yeah, but they're redshirts, they always die in Star Trek.
Son: (Beat) Can't they just take their shirts off?

A collection of Star Trek-related stories from Not Always Right: (https://notalwaysright.com/the-needs-of-the-company-outweigh-the-needs-of-the-few/56528/)

You Will Be Medicated (https://notalwaysworking.com/you-will-be-medicated/30444)
(I’m a regular patient at a particular clinic due to a lasting disease. I’m going into a procedure that requires anesthesia; the anesthesiologist is asking me several questions.)
Anesthesiologist: “…and last, are you familiar with Star Trek?”
Me: “Yes, I am.”
Anesthesiologist: “The gas we’re about to give you is similar to the Borg. Resistance is Futile!”
(They proceed to put the mask on me. I show the Vulcan salute. And as I’m drifting off, he salutes back.)
Anesthesiologist: “Live long and prosper.”
(I was glad to have been taken care of by a fellow geek!)

Working Your Way Up To The Bridge (https://notalwaysworking.com/working-your-way-up-to-the-bridge/31108)
(It’s my first week on the job, and I’m talking to a few of my coworkers, trying to build some sort of friendship.)
Me: “Oh, do you watch Star Trek?”
Coworker #1: “Oh goodness, not another one.”
Coworker #2: *shaking her head* “You’ll get along with [manager], then.”
(Just at that moment, [manager] leaves for lunch. Before he leaves, he turns to the assistant manager.)
Manager: “Number one, you have the bridge.”
Assistant Manager: “Aye, captain.”
(I can’t stop laughing, while my other coworkers shake their heads. Later on, I need to ask my manager a question about my work.)
Me: “…so, [manager], I believe that’s the correct course of action.”
Manager: “Make it so.”
(I try to stifle my laughter, as I see my coworkers shaking their heads even more. Needless to say, my manager and I have become the best of friends!)

Aimless Assimilating (https://notalwaysworking.com/aimless-assimilating/32125)
(This happened when the ‘Star Trek Experience’ was open in Vegas. One of the gimmicks were they had actors dressed as the franchise’s iconic aliens walking around the hotel.)
Me: “Excuse me; my son is asking for a picture with the Borg drones that were in the lobby earlier. Do you know where they went?”
Receptionist: “Hmm, if they aren’t on the floor then they’re probably participating on one of the rides.”
Me: “Well do you know when they’ll be back? I mean are they on a rotation to come out, or do they just walk around aimlessly whenever they aren’t needed?”
(The receptionist gives me a funny look.)
Receptionist: “Sir, they’re the Borg. Walking around aimlessly is kind of what they’re known for.”
(I stare blankly for a moment.)
Receptionist: “Sorry, I just couldn’t let that one slip.”
Me: “No, no that was actually pretty good.”
(We eventually did manage to snag the drones after they reappeared, and specifically asked the receptionist to join us in the photo.)

Boldly Going Into Employment (https://notalwaysworking.com/boldly-going-into-employment/32584)
(We just hired on a bunch of new people. The kid I am training has never had a job before and is a bit nervous, so we chat a little.)
Coworker: “You do everything so fast! But, I guess you’ve been doing it for a while.”
Me: “Yes, long enough that the managers are comfortable with me training new people.”
Coworker: “So why don’t you have a red shirt like the other crew trainers?”
Me: “Oh, there was a little part of my certification that I didn’t complete in time so I was not officially promoted to a crew trainer. However, I still make the same amount as them and I still train people. The only difference is the red shirt.”
Coworker: “I think it was a good idea to pass up on the red shirt.”
Me: “Was that a vague Star Trek reference?”
Coworker: “Yes! I think I’m going to like it here…”

A Long But Prosperous Day (https://notalwaysworking.com/a-long-but-prosperous-day/33136)
(I have been summoned for jury duty and am going through the courthouse security checkpoint. As requested, I empty my pockets of all metallic objects, including my keys, before passing through the walk-through metal detector. When the guard sees my keychain he does a double take with a quizzical look on his face.)
Me: “Oh, that strange-looking item is my keychain. It’s just a small electronic toy that resembles one of those communicators from the original Star Trek series. I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched it, but I assure you, this keychain is definitely not harmful.”
(Anxious to prove that the keychain wasn’t in fact a concealed weapon of some sort, I demonstrated to the guard that it just flipped open and made chirping noises that sounded just like the communicators from the show. As the guard observed this, his expression became overly serious, which worried me.)
Guard: “Here. I need to examine it more closely.”
(He motions for me to hand it over to him. After I comply, he flips it open and holds it up as though he is about to speak through it.)
Guard: “This is Captain James T. Kirk. Beam me up, Scotty!”
(Needless to say, I had worried for nothing! Furthermore, this put a big grin on my face and brightened up what was otherwise a long, dreary day in the jury room.)

Hopefully The Next Supply Will Live Long And Prosper (https://notalwaysworking.com/hopefully-the-next-supply-will-live-long-and-prosper/33458)
(I work in the deli section of my store. Lately we have been having trouble getting supplies in stock.)
Me: “Where are all the trash bags?”
Coworker: “We don’t have any.”
Me: “Are you serious? Again?!”
Coworker: “Yup.”
Me: “I’m going to head over to bakery and see if they have any.”
Coworker: “Not gonna work.”
Me: “Why not?”
Coworker: “[Baker] is working today. You know how he is. He never helps anybody out.”
Me: “I know how to handle him. Trust me.”
(The baker who’s working today happens to be a huge ‘Star Trek’ fan. I head over to the bakery and don’t see him as I proceed to grab a few trash bags, but then he shows up as I’m about to leave.)
Baker: “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Me: “Getting bags.”
Baker: “No, you’re not. Put them back.”
Me: “We have zero bags at the deli.”
Baker: “Well, I have almost zero bags here. I can’t let you have any.”
Me: *deadpan, holding up a Vulcan salute* “It is only logical. The needs of the deli outweigh the needs of the few.”
(A few seconds pass.)
Baker: “HA HA! All right, all right. Take your stinkin’ bags.”
(I can still hear him cracking up as I walk away.)

Dusty Abel strikes again!

The villains from the Adam West Batman show (https://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Rogues-650013615)

Oh, I love these guys. Every so often a guy just wants to watch villains who are 100% Eeeeeeviiiiilllll and are as shallow as a puddle. Just to cleanse the proverbial palette, you understand.

'60's Marvel Villains (https://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/60-s-Marvel-Villains-29588342)

That'd be Kraven the Hunter, Klaw, Mr. Hyde (looking remarkably Ferrigno Hulkish if you ask me), Absorbing Man, and The Melter

'70s TV Detectives (https://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Cops-Detectives-and-Private-Eyes-of-the-70s-461737806)

I'm the first to admit that I didn't watch these shows, but my parents sure did! The only ones I recognize are Kojak, Columbo, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

Superman through the Years (https://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Superman-75-line-up-449653910)

'70s Action Adventure (https://dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art/Sat-Morning-Action-Adv-TV-83825680)

I didn't watch these shows, and the only ones I recognize are Captain Marvel (still wish they'd renamed him to Captain Thunder and not Shazam, Shazam is the wizard!) and Isis.

Today's shilling target is the Today I Found Out (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64UiPJwM_e9AqAd7RiD7JA) channel. I don't like how much self-promotion and in-video ads that they do, but since this is their full-time job and they make daily videos I guess I can't complain.

Anyway, today's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6tLeYJQS58) is about whether tapping a shaken can of pop (they call it soda, but to me it's pop!) helps to stop foam spillover. If you don't want to watch it, the short answer is...no, it doesn't. Just give a shaken can a minute to settle down.

There are lots of charts and experimental results (and lots of pouring perfectly good coke into a foam cooler to throw out later, ugh). To quote Adam Savage, "The only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSUMBBFjxrY)".

And I think I already posted the pop vs. soda survey results (http://www.popvssoda.com/) years ago, but I can't find it, so here it is again.

Today's latest silly online game straight from the Straight Dope forum:

How many taps (i.e. hitting the same button over and over) can you do in a minute? (http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm)

I start out over 400, but around 380 seems to be my average, at least for the first minute.

The forumgoers (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=623840) have multiple strategies for upping the numbers, including multiple fingers on multiple keys, which I think is a different category entirely. Random flailing over the entire keyboard gets me up to about 1400, but gets exhausting really fast.

Anyway, if you want to waste a minute on a meaningless task and are at an actual keyboard (and aren't somewhere where the noise would bother someone), give it a try.

Fanart by Amy Mebberson (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/archive)

Most of her stuff is Disney related (and more specifically, the Disney Princesses), but there are other franchises represented. Here are a few highlights:

Elsa, Belle, and Snow White can't handle summers, so they'll stay in while Jasmine and Tiana stay out. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/163808566609/pocket-princesses-214-summer-hibernation-please)

What kind of doughnut would each princess ask for on National Doughnut Day (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/161365874539/pocket-princesses-206-national-doughnut-day)?

The princesses play in the giant Money Bin attraction (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/163016479579/pocket-princesses-211-d23-expo-2017-please).

Belle's dress needs something else... (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/158251732774/pocket-princesses-195-new-dress-please-reblog)

Aurora tries using a "dinglehopper" to curl her hair. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/155500971149/pocket-princesses-187-life-hacks-please-reblog)

Merida and Mulan go shoe shopping...for their horses. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/139621839199/pocket-princesses-180-shoe-shopping-please) Note the name on the crates...

Back to the Future...kiddie edition (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/131656277259/happy-back-to-the-future-day-my-humble)!

A black cat/Friday the 13th prank backfires...and is that Figaro (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/133156070229/pocket-princesses-171-friday-the-13th-please)?

The princesses cosplay as Marvel superheroines (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/117868708534/pocket-princesses-146-free-comic-book-day-please)

Jesse the Yodeling Cowgirl rides Applejack (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/115779168169/run-like-the-wind-applejack)

Kristoff welcomes Anna home, he's a keeper (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/116064431824/pocket-princesses-144-welcome-home-please-reblog)

The princesses dress as their animal friends, and that means Elsa has to dress as Olaf (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/101431688074/pocket-princesses-125-happy-halloween-please)

Tiana doesn't like Pumpkin Spice any more than I do (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/100259644359/pocket-princesses-123-pumpkin-spice-please)

Cinderella goes through glass slippers at an impressive rate... (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/91491875534/pocket-princesses-111-replacements-please)

Anna and Rapunzel look similar (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/93221323249/you-look-familiar-sdcc-piece), tying into that whole linked Disney universe theory. It's a mess, but you can read about it here (http://www.eonline.com/news/523425/after-reading-this-you-will-never-watch-frozen-tangled-or-the-little-mermaid-the-same-way-again)...

Tiana is chagrined by the great Sleeping Beauty pink vs. blue debate (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/87334275559/pocket-princesses-105-cupcakes-some-things)

Basic Kiki's Delivery Service fanart. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/77417118479/emerald-city-comic-con-pre-commissions-are-now) Is that Kiki supposed to be more in the style of another animated character?

Mickey and Minnie do their own version of Paperman (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/66168923025/papermouse-i-did-this-as-a-little-demo-at-d23)

DC superheroine group shot. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/66544387672/briannedrouhard-dc-princess-bash-they-could) It's interesting how some of these are in the style of the DC Nation shorts, but others edge a bit more toward manga or the Timmiverse style.

Gaston's fan club (aka the Bimbettes) as Huey, Dewey, and Louie. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/69338841326/bimbettes-up-to-no-good-another-coloured)Incidentally, today I learned that the red one is Claudette, the yellow one is Laurette, and the green one is Paulette.

Tinkerbell as Wonder Woman. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/58299080176/wonder-tink)I love how she kept the boot pom-poms.

A collage of Disney redheads. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/56535198307/redheads-silkscreen-no-longer-available-from) Pop quiz: Can you tell me the name of that cowgirl next to Jesse without looking it up?

Disney Princess Singalong (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/54397160443/singalong-ltd-edition-lithograph-sold-out)!

Belle cosplaying as Han Solo. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/55273749372/a-beauty-but-a-stuck-up-sharp-witted) I didn't know that his blaster was called a DL-44.

Disney Afternoon group shot. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/56535223998/silvaniart-theres-so-much-to-do-gettin)I admit that I don't like the limited number of colors, and that row of Beagle Boys at the top should be the different ones, not just a bunch of clones of a generic Beagle Boy.

The Sailor Moon cast drawn as though they were created in more recent time. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/47216437948/this-is-probably-the-very-first-sailor-moon-fanart) It's good art, but I'm reminded of that much-hyped Archie redesign and relaunch of a few years ago...

Belle and Beast as the main characters of Paperman (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/43547101833/silvaniart-paperbeast-if-this-doesnt-go-to-a).

Belle enrolls at Hogwarts. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/33826098162/ravenclaw-belle-nycc-sketch)I question her placement in Ravenclaw, but that's a discussion for another day...

The princesses cosplay as the different incarcations of The Doctor, and various Pixar characters cosplay as Star Wars characters (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/32857419992/it-is-time-for-the-unveiling-of-shiny-new-swag-for)

Steampunk Aurora and Belle (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/33393540642/steampunk-aurora-belle-nycomiccon-sketch)

Belle and Beast enroll at Howarts. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/29562749771/silvaniart-commission-the-beast-who-lived-to) This time they're in Gryffindor.

Princess Kida's application to join the Pocket Princesses (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/21941176768/pocket-princesses-16-application). With the benefit of hindsight I'm willing to accept that Atlantis the Lost Empire wasn't as good as I remember. That doesn't mean that the characters deserve to be forgotten, however.

The princesses cosplay as Batman villainesses (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/17383239495/gotham-city-princesses)

The princesses cosplay as Marvel superheroines (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/15311260192/mutant-princesses-warming-up-for-a-busy-year-a)

Rapunzel as Wonder Woman. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/12025763426/silvaniart-charity-piece-i-keep-wondering-and) Pascal as Steve Trevor is more of a mystery...

Rapunzel as X-23. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/11543496398/fun-size-rapunzel-as-x-23-nycc-commission) This one is just weird...what connection is there? With her haircut and look I would expect her to be the Wasp or Black Widow before X-23.

Belle reads the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/11014752461/belle-cant-talk-readin). The connection eludes me, is it just because it's a geeky book?

Belle in "1630" style. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/10586253190/belle-1630s) She looks great and I guess she is supposed to be a Regency-era English heroine, but she still looks more like a 19th-century Southern belle if you ask me.

The princesses in '40s USO costumes. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/10585331441/disney-princess-uso) I'll just throw up a link to "Star Spangled Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i574Em3IrI)" again...

Tinker Bell as Eliza Doolittle. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/9396709665/tinker-bell-doolittle-d23expo-commission)

Beaker from the Muppets as a member of SG-1. (http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/7703800166/col-beaker-oneill-sg1-sdcc-commission) Who gave him a gun?

Tammy (Max is her son) cooks creative and attractive food that I would never have the patience (or the food budget!) for. But just like many other "how to" channels, I like to watch other people be creative.

Highlights:

"Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGJ4KndxNi8)"-really pound cake, frosting, and pudding!
"T-Bone Steak (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aoa-7oMRRcw)"-really a brownie!
Pizza Cake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r8IxbQMjA)-it's a layer cake made out of pizza!
Raisin Bread that looks like watermelon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diUDQmlOQfI)-it's funny how many people ask if there's a non-raisin option, forgetting that chocolate chips will melt and not look like watermelon seeds.
Minecraft cake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zwvplLBtMU)-cake, Jello, and rice crispy bars!
Rainbow unicorn poop cookies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrq8v9ijPs4)-there's a fad I'm glad seems to have faded away, the rainbow unicorn poop thing. Ro of Nerdy Nummies made these afterward, but Tammy made them first!
Kit Kat Ice Cream Cake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MohhyHgQKRE)-I'm always reminded of my mom when watching this video, she loved Kit Kats...
Melted Snowman Cookies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcWdu6-rbdg)
Marshmallow Cereal Christmas Wreaths (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl6VzOrRkmQ)-This one reminds me of my mom, she would make treats out of chocolate and chow mein noodles (what some call "chocolate easter nests (http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/easter-ideas/a31622/chocolate-nests-recipe/)", only without the bells and whistles)

The borders between the nations of the world, along with when each segment was finalized. (http://www.visualcapitalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/age-of-borders.html)

You'd be surprised at how "new" some borders are and how "old" some others are, especially when there's a new one next to an old one.

There are also notes for several critical segments.

Incidentally, the oldest continuous border segment between current nations is the 120 km perimeter of Andorra between France and Spain, 1278. Wow.

Put a string of numbers in the box and the page will tell you where they first occur in the full value of pi, i.e. which decimal place they start at.

How To Make Stuff makes a half-scale Optimus Prime Ion Blaster
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvA0VrdRRUA)
I must confess that I didn't watch much G1 when it was first airing, I guess I was still in my Disney Afternoon phase back then. I jumped on board the whole Transformers thing for Beast Wars later on. However, I do really like the design of G1 Optimus Prime and agree that Peter Cullen is the voice of the character.

JTMitchell87 reviews the Masterpiece Optimus Prime collectors toy/statue (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PawvKjOL68E). This is one cool toy.

Phelous reviews the Pepsi Convoy toy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVhYZaGXJwI).

The death of Optimus Prime (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1vJVlYoar8).

Optimus Prime "meets" Optimus Primal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NtaL2j2eVg). I think I was aware at the time how they'd mixed up Optimus Prime's spark holder and the Matrix of Leadership, but at least they tried to cover it up by having Rhinox say that the spark "has the Matrix with it", implying that both could possibly be held in the same holder. Other sources imply that the two holders are different sizes, and one lies behind the other...look, continuity in Transformers is almost as bad as Star Trek and Star Wars, let's move on...

Orchestral version of the theme. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SQCZDMgfsU) I think SFDebris took this version as the theme for his Transfomers reviews...

Peter Cullen announces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0Jtt2BVMLU) that he's no longer the voice of Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh productions (starting with the 2011 movie), so he has Optimus Prime "talk" to Eeyore.

It's Vintage TV Commercials Featuring Star Trek Actors Day!

Leonard Nimoy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4pBk3-fduU) (in a wonderful Seventies mustache) shills a LaserDisc player and talks to a beeping crystal.
MCI Phone Plan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9EBHIhx8ik)featuring the TOS cast (and Jonathan Frakes for some reason)
This Cheer laundry detergent is a weird one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l96aDWIbn48). The TOS music and sound effects are authentic enough, but the costumes and transporter visuals are just wrong. No Trek actors, but there is a guy who it looks like he's attempting to evoke the Klingons, along with a Leonard Nimoy voiceover.
A group of TOS lookalikes shill for Kentucky Fried Chicken (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZBTDlvShYg). Nice usage of music and sound effects, but it's a little unsettling how close the impersonations got. I suppose the Uncanny Valley can exist even in live-action.
DeForest Kelley shills for Trivial Pursuit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XrVZS2eUsw&index=2&list=PL5zwq76EsRxoIMpHe67dgwDTjAEIKiwAC). "I'm an actor, not a doctor!"
Robert Picardo (with hair, a mustache, and a cheesy French accent) sells Crystal Sugar. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eThoFZKfnY&list=PL5zwq76EsRxoIMpHe67dgwDTjAEIKiwAC&index=27)

Back in the 90's Hallmark made some commercials for their Star Trek Christmas ornaments featuring minor characters:

Nurse Ogawa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJfS4bVfJj8)
Chancellor Gowron (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Af0Tvk5B0)
Sub-Commander T'Rul (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKe3ZF5i6L8) (or Martha Hackett playing another Romulan)
Leonard Nimoy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4pP0ci6RTQ) (not a minor character or even in-character, but still!)

Mathologer presents alternate ways to prove the Pythagorean Theorem. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-0SOWbzUYI)

Just in case you didn't really believe that a^2+b^2=c^2.

Stick around for a proof of how the cosine rule ties into the theorem.

Coming on Thursday is Episode One of the Hexagonal Phase of the Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09vm093) (based on the pseudocanon sixth book And Another Thing by Eoin Colfer) with a CD edition being released later this year (https://www.amazon.com/Hitchhikers-Guide-Galaxy-Hexagonal-Phase/dp/1785299115).

I appreciate that they've kept as much of the original cast as possible, but I don't really care. I never read And Another Thing because it's not by Adams (and you never use frood as a verb or capitalize zark (http://www.fiveminute.net/forums/showpost.php?p=77152&postcount=496)).

Stephen Hawking died. (https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/14/health/stephen-hawking-dead/index.html)

Of course I have to link to the TNG poker game

Clip of him performing as the new voice of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the Hexagonal Phase of the radio show. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p060hy01) Since it's based on And Another Thing, which I don't consider a real entry in the series, I don't care to listen to the rest, but I still consider it a kick to hear him here.
Clip of him performing as Deep Thought in a documentary about the Hitchhiker's Guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g21icaGo1WE). It's a shame he couldn't deliver that "42" punchline with the same gravitas as Valentine Dyall did in the TV series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZLtcTZP2js).

Incidentally, I never did get around to watching The Theory of Everything. I've read about him and know how depressing it's going to get, why torture myself again?
