December 12

Am I sick of making "I'm not dead" updates? Yes. Am I about to make another one? Well, yeah.

This being the end of the fall term, I've been kept hopping. Last week I had a presentation and an exam for one of my courses, plus proctoring and marking duties for a course I'm TAing. This week? A presentation and an exam for my other course and proctoring and marking duties for the other course I'm TAing. If I'd gone into this with some momentum built up, it wouldn't have been a problem, but for some time now I've been running on fumes where 5M.net is concerned. This isn't my usual writer's block complaint; on the contrary, I'm brimming with ideas and plans and such. It's sitting down and doing them that I've sucked at lately.

All I can say is that I'll keep trying. I haven't given up on this site and I'm not going to. I've just been a little bummed out.

Exciting stuff first, boring stuff afterwards. New fiver! Here's Derek's take on the third Smallville episode of Season 5, "Hidden."

Now the boring stuff, if so it be, which consists of two parts: what The Plan is, and why it changed. First of all, the reason the Smallville event has been moving so very, very slowly is stupid, but easily explained. As with several past events, especially subsite relaunches, I wanted to include a surprise contribution from me. Inexplicably, it hadn't yet gotten through my head that I always screw that up. So between not having my fiver ready and general site-related frustration (see previous newspost), I put off ending the event.

However, this did at least lead to good timing. The plan now is as follows: with six fivers left in the event, we'll be posting one a day till the 25th, where we'll wrap up with the seasonally appropriate "Lexmas." If I manage to finish my fiver, it'll be included, and if not, it won't. This works well because I don't have as much time online now that I'm back in Ottawa, so one-fiver updates are just what the doctor ordered.

Finally, a quick note on what's coming after the event: there are three things I'm hoping to do as Christmas presents of sorts for the 5M.net community. They're things which have been a long time in coming and the subject of much popular demand. Of the three, only one will probably be possible before I return to Waterloo, but maybe not. Feel free to speculate on what these things are. I will confirm or deny nothing.

Next up from Derek is a Smallville episode that needs no introduction: "Aqua"!

Yep, Aquaman. And they're developing a spinoff based on him! I think we can safely say that Sea Hell has frozen over.

Here's Derek with the conclusion of Smallville's first big arc this season: "Solitude." (You Americans will just have to settle for second place -- here in Canada we have two solitudes.)

By the way, turns out I miscounted: we had only six fivers left, not five. But I missed yesterday's update anyway due to Christmas shopping, so it works out. Stay tuned for the big guns of this event tomorrow and Sunday, featuring Derek's "Lexmas" and a surprise guest.

From Krypton.

That still has some shock value left, right? Right?

Merry Christmas! First things first: as promised, here's Derek's final fiver of this event: "Lexmas," in which Lex learns that it's always Christmas in Heaven. (And Hell? Valentine's Day, 24/7.)

Unfortunately, I've discovered I don't have a copy of the surprise guest fiver here in Ottawa. Hopefully the author can send me a copy; if not, it'll have to wait till I get back. Fortunately, I do have a backup -- a Top 10 list from me. Here's the first Smallville "girlfriend list": The Top 10 Signs That Your Girlfriend is Lana Lang.

And now, at last, the honest-to-Kryptonian-god conclusion of the Smallville event. Drumroll, please... here's Five-Minute Superman: The Movie, by Scooter! You'll believe a man can five.

Be sure to check out the front page -- I've finally made a new Christmas banner. And be here tomorrow for a big change of pace.

The two family gatherings today took longer than I expected, so today you'll have to settle for a link and a suggestion. Remember Xenoclone? I linked to his site, Star Trek: Enterprise Power Rankings, last year. It's still one of the more interesting ENT sites around, but he's since expanded it with other content, including some BSG reviews. There's even some original fiction -- read "Eve's Cheese" for a twist I guarantee you won't see coming. It's all at Xenoclone.com.

And the suggestion? Hop over to Features and read (or reread) The Disbanding by Annin. Tomorrow you'll be glad you did.

The thing I'm working on isn't quite done -- but that's why it's so good to have Kristina Runyeon-Odeberg around! When she heard that the next update would be VOY-related, she reminded me about her unpublished fiver. Now it is unpublished no longer. Behold our first VOY guest fiver in at least a year: "Heroes and Demons."

Welcome to the last update of the year! First a bit of explanation: This year at Deltachat (the first forum I ever joined and the birthplace of 5MV), there was a Secret Santa event, and I was assigned to Doc Annin. She's the same Annin who wrote one of my all-time favourite VOY parodies: The Disbanding, which can be found in our Features section. What else could I do but write a sequel?

Don't answer that. Instead, read The Disbanding 2: Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It's got the Voyager crew, the Underused Characters' Tavern, and more references than you can shake two lambs' tails at. Merry Christmas, Annin -- and happy New Year's Eve to all and sundry.
